Removing the Obstacles that Confront: The Impact of a Nontraditional School Reform Model on the Graduation Rate in an Urban School District

Although access to education in the United States has improved for students across race, class, ethnicity, and gender, not all demographic groups’ progress has kept pace with access (Mujic, 2015). Over the past two decades, more high school dropouts have been enrolled in public schools serving predominantly African American and Hispanic students of low socioeconomic status (Mujic, 2015). This portraiture study involved interviewing and observing six participants in an established nontraditional educational setting. The study aimed to examine educators’ perceptions regarding using a nontraditional school reform model to improve graduation rates in an identified urban school district serving predominantly African American and Hispanic students of low socioeconomic status. National, state, and local education may benefit from these findings to improve graduation rates nationwide. School districts and individual schools may also benefit from these findings and adopt the strategies employed to increase the graduation rates for the students they serve.Ruttencutter, Gwen S.Gunn, Nicole P.Ed.D.Educational leadershi

This item contains 1 PDF with 4 pages in addition to 4 JP2 filesThis document provides a detailed history of "Blind Tigers" in Berrien County, Georgia, a term referring to illegal alcohol sales and the locations or individuals involved. The term originated from two methods used during prohibition: charging a fee to see a "wild animal" while offering alcohol for "free," or discreetly selling alcohol through a hole in a wall to obscure the identities of both seller and buyer. Georgia had early restrictions on alcohol, dating back to 1735, and by 1898, Berrien County was already a dry county under the 1885 General Local Option Liquor Law, predating statewide prohibition. This led to frequent law enforcement actions, with newspaper accounts from 1904 through the 1930s detailing raids, arrests, and trials of "Blind Tigers," often involving African Americans. Notably, the statewide prohibition in 1907, partly in response to the Atlanta Race Riots, intensified "Blind Tiger" activity in Berrien County, leading to violent confrontations, such as the 1909 "Battle of Bullets" near Sparks. The document also describes "blanket juice," a local illicit drink made from fermented cane syrup during this period. Although national prohibition ended in 1933, Georgia remained dry until 1938, with some alcohol restrictions, known as "blue laws," continuing even until 2011, making the concept of a "blind tiger" still relevant in local humor for obtaining alcohol on Sundays

"The Fads the Drive Us: From Frazer, Freud, and Foucault to Butler and Connell." Paper presented at the Shaking the Tree, Breaking the Bough: Frazer's Golden Bough at 100, Melbourne, Australia, February 12, 2023

Each case study focuses on the work of a specific scholar and how that scholar's work has influenced the academy, even into the present day. I begin with the work of James Frazer and his Golden Bough to show how the concepts of sex and fertility have been hopelessly intertwined for the past century. Next on the docket is Sigmund Freud and his insistence (and our acceptance) of the idea that females are (sexually) passive. Jumping ahead we consider Michel Foucault's work on sexuality, and specifically the idea that sexual intercourse is inherently hierarchical, forcing all discussions of ancient homosexuality into a “who's on top?” paradigm. From here we turn to Judith Butler and the increasingly accepted notion in Ancient Studies that “biological” sex is a modern, Western invention and that the ancients were non-binary. Finally, we consider the work of Raewyn Connell and how her theories of hegemonic masculinity are taking over gender studies. In the end, we shall see that even when we realize that the works of past (and present) scholars are dated, wrong, or simply not applicable to the past, we continue to be unduly influenced by their theories, often merely out of habit. This does not stop us from making the same mistakes in present time

"The Golden Bough and the Press." Paper presented at the Shaking the Tree, Breaking the Bough: Frazer's Golden Bough at 100, Melbourne, Australia, February 10, 2023

Frazer and his contemporaries such as Charles Darwin and Herbert Spencer captured the public imagination in Victorian Britain by promoting these ideas of New Imperialism, capitalizing on the opportunities provided by a flourishing newspaper industry to reach a wide and diverse audience. The dramatic growth of the press in Victorian Britain was partly a consequence of societal changes affecting and guiding the content that newspapers published, but it was also influenced by the introduction of ‘new journalism,' a populist style that was designed to entertain as well as educate. As a result, The Golden Bough frequently appeared in newspapers in the form of reviews, lectures, and correspondence, which gave Frazer a high public profile in the press in Victorian and Edwardian Britain. Critics have pointed to flaws in his methodology, his inaccuracy, and his overly universalizing tendencies, but as I will show in this paper, the widespread exposure provided to both Frazer and his work by newspapers in the nineteenth and twentieth century achieved a populist appeal that continues to the present day. "I Dare You to Underestimate Me": A Narrative Inquiry of Women Student Veterans’ Transition into Higher Education Institutions

Women are the fastest growing population of veterans in the United States. When asked why they joined the military, women have overwhelming indicated they were seeking educational benefits; as such, the number of women veterans attending higher education has risen. While women veterans face many challenges, including physical and mental health challenges, at a greater proportion than male veterans, they also struggle when they return to the classroom. Previous research has shown that in higher education institutions, women student veterans often feel marginalized and invisible as a group and struggle with who they are due to identity dissonance. However, when transitioning into higher education, they tend to excel within their respective institutions. Though research has focused on the challenges women veterans face, few studies have sought to identify the attributes that help women student veterans succeed—more so than male veterans or their female non-veteran peers. In this study, the researcher conducted semi-structured interviews with five diverse women veterans who attended higher education institutions, creating an overarching narrative of their time in the military, their transitions to higher education, and their beliefs about their futures after graduation. Participants’ stories identified the challenges, support strategies, and factors related to their military service and their successful college persistence and graduation. The findings from this research may help administrators better understand the needs of this growing population of women student veterans and the practical steps higher education institutions can take to assist in their success.Roberts, DianeWorkman, JamieMoore, BrianEd.D.Educatio

Leading from the Middle: A Narrative Analysis of Award-Winning School Library Media Specialists in Georgia

The purpose of this qualitative study was to analyze and share the leadership stories of successful library media specialists, uncovering how they perceive themselves as leaders, how they enact leadership in their role, and bridge the gap between leadership standards and the lived professional experiences of library media specialists as school leaders. The six participants in this study were school library media specialists in Georgia that won Library Media Specialist of the Year and/or Exemplary Library Media Program during the years 2017-2021. Research data was collected through three interviews with each participant using a narrative inquiry approach. Descriptive coding, focused coding, and connection strategies were used to analyze the data. Five themes emerged from the data, including relationships, communication, dispositions, leadership, and continued learning. Implications for practice include leadership study as a focus for graduate degree programs in library media education, as well as in professional learning and library media advocacy work. Future research suggestions include gaining the perspectives of students, teachers, and administrators on library media specialist leadership, as well as a broader geographic study of library media specialists.Chapter I: INTRODUCTION 1 -- Background of the Study 1 -- Statement of the Problem 3 -- Purpose 6 -- Research Questions 7 -- Significance of the Study 8 -- Conceptual Framework 10 -- Definitions 13 -- Chapter II: LITERATURE REVIEW 16 -- The Impact of the School Library Program 17 -- The Expanding Role of the Library Media Specialist 21 -- Current Roles and Responsibilities 24 -- The Leadership Call 29 -- School Library Media Specialist Leadership in Georgia 31 -- Leadership Constructs 33 -- Transformational Leadership Theory 34 -- School Librarian Leadership Theory 36 -- Leadership Dispositions in School Library Media Specialists 39 -- Leadership Education 41 -- From Management to Leadership 43 -- School Culture 44 -- Conclusion 45 -- Chapter III: METHODOLOGICAL APPROACH 46 -- Participants 49 -- Selection Process 50 -- Data Collection 53 -- Field Notes 55 -- Data Analysis 56 -- Credibility 58 -- Conclusion 60 -- Chapter IV: PARTICIPANT PROFILES 62 -- Participant: Beverly 63 -- Beverly’s Site 66 -- Participant: Toni 67 -- Toni’s Site 71 -- Participant: Harper 72 -- Harper’s Site 74 -- Participant: Grace 75 -- Grace’s Site 77 -- Participant: Louisa 78 -- Louisa’s Site 80 -- Participant: Jane 81 -- Jane’s Site 83 -- Chapter V: DATA ANALYSIS AND RESULTS 85 -- Themes 86 -- Discussion of Themes 86 -- Relationships 86 -- Communication 94 -- Dispositions 100 -- Leadership 106 -- Continuing Education 124 -- Conclusion 128 -- Chapter VI: DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION 129 -- Research Questions 129 -- Interpretation of Findings 130 -- Research Question 1 130 -- Research Question 2 133 -- Research Question 3 139 -- Implications for Practice 141 -- Graduate School Programs 141 -- Professional Learning 141 -- Communication 143 -- Advocacy 144 -- Transformational Leadership 144 -- Theory 145 -- Policy 145 -- Limitations 146 -- Recommendations for Future Research 146 -- Conclusions 147 -- REFERENCES 149.Fiester, HerbertHill, Denise LNobles, KathyEd.D.Educatio

A Case Study Exploring the Experiences of African American Muslim Males in Georgia Public High Schools

In this case study, I explored the experiences of African American Muslim males(AAMM) who attended or graduated from public high schools in Georgia. Islam is not new to America; our society has a limited understanding of Islam and African American males in education (Howard, 2014). Nationally, educators in public schools have historically experienced challenges related to educating African American males. Islamophobia is increasing as Islam becomes one of the fastest-growing religions in the world, and racism is a constant (Mohamed, 2016). This data indicates that public educators may experience increasing numbers of African American Muslims. However, in a recent 2020 US Mosque Survey, African American converts appear to have an unexplainable decline (Bagby, 2020). In this research, I designed a case study to explore the intersectionality of race, gender, culture, and religion as seen in the day-to-day experiences of AAMM in public high schools in Georgia. I also used purpose and snowball sampling to select five high school students to participate in this study. I used various coding strategies to analyze data. Findings from this study may develop training for educators to help improve pedagogical practices that are culturally relevant to the growing Muslim population in the United States.Gunn, NicoleSchmertzing, RichardDowney, StevenEd.D.Education in Leadershi
