A Qualitative Study Investigating the Onboarding Experience in Higher Education and the Effect that It Has on Employment Retention, Satisfaction, and Success
Orientation programs have traditionally been implemented to share information about the institution and typically involve consistent goals that connect new faculty to other colleagues, clarify and establish expectations, expose new faculty to the culture of the institution, and introduce each to the available services at the institution. Historically, new faculty orientation programs have struggled to clarify their role and purpose and develop programs that meet each person’s specific needs. This study investigates the effectiveness and significance of new faculty orientation programs at Georgia College & State University and Valdosta State University, focusing on the perceptions and experiences of each of the 13 new faculty who participated in the study during the 2022-2023 academic year. The study explores activities, challenges, and insights related to onboarding, aiming to understand its impact on new faculty. Specifically, this study examines how onboarding and orientation practices impact newly hired faculty members' integration, sense of belonging, long-term engagement, and uncertainty reduction within their institution. The study highlights the importance of tailored orientation practices in clarifying expectations and connecting faculty with campus resources. Key factors contributing to successful onboarding include personalized experiences, valuable connections, and clear communication of institutional values. Findings from the interviews reveal the significance of orientation programs in fostering community integration and readiness for academic roles and suggest that effective onboarding facilitates and enhances immediate engagement, a sense of belonging, and long-term retention and presents the significance and role of orientation programs in an important introduction to the academic community.Workman, JamieLandau, JamieSmith, MatthewEd.D.Education in Curriculum and Instructio
Experiences and Perceptions of Fat-bodied Students who are Affiliated with or Who Intend to Affiliate with National Pan-Hellenic Council Fraternities and Sororities
Students at institutions of higher education desire to feel a part of campus. However, for fat-bodied students, their experiences are often lost in the influx of opinions from students, staff, faculty, and university administrators. The literature on the experiences of fat-bodied students in higher education, in general, is limited, with the literature on fatbodied students participating in fraternity and sorority life being even more limited. The publications and sources that do exist with slightly more frequency tend to be blog posts or personal websites addressing the topic. This research serves to highlight the emerging findings of a research study exploring the lived experiences and preconceived ideas of fat-bodied students' engagement with NPHC fraternities and sororities, and the professional perspective of higher education professionals.Workman, JamieSmith, MatthewGibson, MarlonM.Ed.Education in Curriculum and Instructio
Old Berrien Newsletters Vol 6. No.4.
This item contains 1 PDF with 4 pages in addition to 4 JP2 filesThis document aims to provide historical context for the honoring of Confederate soldiers in Berrien County, Georgia. The author, a museum curator, asserts that monuments were erected to honor the lives and service of soldiers, not to celebrate enslavement. The document highlights that while some wealthy Georgians owned slaves, most Berrien County property owners in 1856 owned few or no slaves, and many men were conscripted into the Confederate Army regardless of their personal opinions on slavery or states' rights. Following the Civil War, Presidents Lincoln and Johnson, along with the U.S. Congress, implemented various amnesty acts and proclamations to restore citizenship rights to former Confederates, even posthumously pardoning figures like Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis. Ultimately, the document proposes adding a monument to enslaved individuals and their descendants on the courthouse square as a step towards reconciliation, rather than tearing down existing historical memorials

Being Gifted, Black, and Female: The Experiences of Minority Girls in Gifted and Advanced Programs in Title I Schools
This study explored the experiences of Black girls in gifted and advanced programs in Title I Miami-Dade County Public Schools using critical race theory as a theoretical framework to construct counternarratives, explore gifted programs as property of Whites, and address microaggressions committed against five minority girls in advanced programs. I also studied how the intersectionality of race and gender interacted to create a narrative profile of each profile. A bricolage of methodologies, theoretical frameworks, and research designs was used to explore the “wholeness” of these experiences. Black girls who participated were identified as gifted or on an accelerated track in elementary school, in a gifted program or advanced courses in middle school and the early years of high school, and participated in advanced programming in the latter part of high school. Each attended a Title I school in Miami-Dade County Public Schools at some point in their educational career and matriculated within 1-3 years of the study. Semi-structured interviews were conducted using Siedman’s three-interview series, as well as single focus group and a focus group follow-up interview with each participant. In vivo, values, and descriptive coding were used for first-round coding and pattern coding for second-round coding. Narrative profiles highlighted the experiences of Black girls in gifted and advanced programs. Five themes and 16 categories formed from the study: being a token Black girl, being “woke,” resilience in the face of adversity, advanced programs as a vehicle to success, and the perception of the construct of giftedness.Schmertzing, RichardGunn, NicoleClevenger-Schmertzing, LorraineEd.D.Education in Curriculum and Instructio
