Enhancing Arabic Poetic Structure Analysis through Visualization
This study explores the potential of visual representation in understanding the structural elements of Arabic poetry, a subject of significant educational and research interest. Our objective is to make Arabic poetic works more accessible to readers of both Arabic and non-Arabic linguistic backgrounds by employing visualization, exploration, and analytical techniques. We transformed poetry texts into syllables, identified their metrical structures, segmented verses into patterns, and then converted these patterns into visual representations. Following this, we computed and visualized the dissimilarities between these images, and overlaid their differences. Our findings suggest that the positional patterns across a poem play a pivotal role in effective poetry clustering, as demonstrated by our newly computed metrics. The results of our clustering experiments showed a marked improvement over previous attempts, thereby providing new insights into the composition and structure of Arabic poetry. This study underscored the value of visual representation in enhancing our understanding of Arabic poetry
This study investigates the hypothesis of urban rent dualization as a key to understanding the observed urban form in Bogotá. The theoretical framework addresses urban rent from an economic science perspective, revisiting classical positions that acknowledge the inelastic nature of land supply. It highlights the real estate market, particularly housing supply, market prices, and distribution within the city, as products of social and spatial segregation, considering the persistence of poverty, traditional local economic activities, and a specific metropolitan order.
The thesis comprises three research exercises: firstly, the determination of housing prices using a hedonic pricing model built on the 2012 cadastral database; secondly, an analysis of socio-economic segregation through indices based on the 2014 multidimensional survey; finally, a segmentation model of housing analysed with a panel model (2005-2015). Statistical results and mapping distribution demonstrate the existence of antagonistic forces in the formation of real estate prices in Bogotá, with elements that both increase and decrease housing value, explaining the spatial ruptures due to the previously conceptualized dualization
The intersection between work and family roles and its relationship with self-esteem, guilt, and well-being in general at the intrapersonal and interpersonal level: A theoretical and methodological perspective
PhD thesis submitted to the Faculty of Science, Institute of Work and Organizational Psychology, University of Neuchâtel
Expert committee:
Thesis director – Prof. Laurenz L. Meier, University of Neuchâtel, Switzerland
Internal expert – Prof. Maike Debus, University of Neuchâtel, Switzerland
External expert – Prof. Bettina S. Wiese, University of Aachen, GermanyThis thesis examines the interplay between work and family roles. I examine both the intrapersonal and interpersonal perspectives. The first two studies focus on work-family conflict and its effects on self-conscious attitude (i.e., self-esteem) and on self-conscious emotion (i.e., work-family guilt). The third study focuses on the interpersonal perspective of work-family interaction. The fourth study is a methodological article that provides evidence for the study design in study 2. The four integrated studies also differ methodologically. For example, work-family conflict is examined at the level of everyday life and at the level of long-term effects (study 1 and 2). The third and fourth studies are meta-analyses that shed light on the topic of work-family conflict at the interpersonal level on the basis of primary studies (study 3) and also provide a deeper understanding of two analytical methods (i.e., CLPM and RI-CLPM) (study 4). The individual studies are embedded in previous research and discussed in a broader context

Introduction - Re-Assembling the History of Meridian Circles
Meridian circles were tools of science, state and empire. Besides being used for astro-nomical observations, the by-products of observations made also had more utilitarian purposes applicable to commerce, transportation, industry and the expansion of em-pires. While meridian circles were created with the aim of producing spatial and tempo-ral uniformity, observatories adopted different assemblages and configurations for their instruments. This issue brings together for the first time a variety of contributions to explore the material and social history of meridian circles. It deploys the concept assem-blage to connect the different historical approaches together and to re-assemble the long history of the instrument.tru
Does Certifying Foreign Qualifications Lead to Better Immigrant Skills Utilization?
Using a novel panel dataset on recent immigrants in Switzerland, we study the relationship between the degree of skills utilization, the foreign-acquired education and its certification in the host country. We find that the relationship with foreign education is negative, especially when acquired in a non-EU country, in line with the literature documenting the imperfect international transferability of human capital. Obtaining a “Certificate of Equivalence” in Switzerland makes this relationship statistically non-significant: in other words, the certification enables immigrants to enjoy the same degree of skills utilization in the Swiss labour market as those with Swiss education. Additional results suggest that immigrants with a foreign but not Swiss-certified education keep the degree of skill utilization as high as it would be if they were Swiss educated when they obtain a job contract or job offer before migrating to Switzerland. These findings are robust to controlling for self-selection on unobserved characteristics
Genomic evidence for three distinct species in the Erebia manto complex in Central Europe (Lepidoptera, Nymphalidae)
A problem to implement conservation strategies is that in many cases recognized taxa are in fact complexes of several cryptic species. Failure to properly delineate species may lead to misplaced priorities or to inadequate conservation measures. One such species complex is the yellow-spotted ringlet Erebia manto, which comprises several phenotypically distinct lineages, whose degree of genomic isolation has so far not been assessed. Some of these lineages are geographically restricted and thus possibly represent distinct units with conservation priorities. Using several thousand nuclear genomic markers, we evaluated to which degree the bubastis lineage from the Alps and the vogesiaca lineage from the Vosges, are genetically isolated from the widespread manto lineage. Our results suggest that both lineages are genetically as strongly differentiated from manto as other taxonomically well separated sibling species in this genus from each other, supporting a delineation of bubastis and vogesiaca as independent species. Given the restricted and isolated range of vogesiaca as well as the disjunct distribution of bubastis, our findings have significant implication for future conservation efforts on these formerly cryptic species and highlight the need to investigate the genomic identity within species complexes
