From Forest to Zoo: Great Ape Behavior Recognition with ChimpBehave
This paper addresses the significant challenge of recognizing behaviors in non-human primates, specifically focusing on chimpanzees. Automated behavior recognition is crucial for both conservation efforts and the advancement of behavioral research. However, it is significantly hindered by the labor-intensive process of manual video annotation. Despite the availability of large-scale animal behavior datasets, the effective application of machine learning models across varied environmental settings poses a critical challenge, primarily due to the variability in data collection contexts and the specificity of annotations. In this paper, we introduce ChimpBehave, a
novel dataset featuring over 2 hours of video (approximately 193,000 video frames) of zoo-housed chimpanzees, meticulously annotated with bounding boxes and behavior labels for action recognition. ChimpBehave uniquely aligns its behavior classes with existing datasets, allowing for the study of domain adaptation and cross-dataset generalization methods between different visual settings. Furthermore, we benchmark our dataset using a state-of- theart CNN-based action recognition model, providing the first baseline results for both within and cross-dataset settings. The dataset, models, and code can be accessed at: https://github.com/MitchFuchs/ChimpBehav

No de thèse : 3145Post-quantum cryptography aims to find quantum-resistant public-key cryptographic schemes, that is, schemes which remain secure against both quantum and standard computers. In fact in 1994, Shor published an algorithm [85] breaking the nowadays used public-key cryptoschemes in polynomial time on a quantum computer. The security of public-key algorithms is based on computationally hard mathematical problems. Among the post-quantum proposals there is the Multivariate Problem: Solving a multivariate polynomial system over a finite field. The general and the most computationally efficient method for solving such systems is computing a Groöbner basis of the ideal they generate. In 2021, Beullens [22] used a strategy involving the MinRank Problem for breaching the most promising multivariate scheme at the time. All the details regarding public-key schemes and in particular the multivariate one can be found within the Introduction.
The thesis is divided into three blocks. The goal of Chapter 1 is twofold. It is a collection of algebraic concepts and classical facts that are used through these pages, in particular, Section 1.1 serves this scope. In addition, the problem of solving polynomial systems via Gr¨bner basis is fully explained in Section 1.2. In Chapter 2 and Chapter 3, I present the two main works of my PhD, during which I mainly focused on the analysis of multivariate cryptoschemes twofolds.
Firstly, together with my advisor Elisa Gorla, we propose a new definition of ‘random system’ using the concept of generality mutued from algebraic geometry. The details of this work are given in Chapter 2. On the other hand, with the help of Daniel Cabarcas (Universidad Nacional de Colombia), we investigated the SupportMinors Modeling, which is a method for modeling the MinRank Problem used by Beullens in his attack. The specifics of this work can be found in Chapter 3
ABSTRACT
This paper examines the paratextual rhetoric in the dedications of the partes de comedias that Lope published during the reign of Philip IV. This is a key period for the repositioning of the Phoenix in the literary field of the moment, due to the literary wars in which he was involved, the opportunities he perceived in the change of government and the poet's courtly ambitions, which converged in the position of royal chronicler. The corpus which I will attend amounts to 72 dedications of individual comedias —those of Partes XV-XX— and six general ones —those that Lope published in the first pages of each of the partes. In all of them, I will examine recurring elements, both at the level of inventio (themes and topics) and elocutio (phrases and metaphors). After reviewing them and proposing a brief quantitative analysis, I will study each element in particular and, above all, I will establish relations that reveal the authorial construction strategies that the Phoenix resorted to during these years.

ABSTRACT
Iron, copper and silver-based objects are a significant part of our cultural heritage. Unfortunately, these metals suffer inevitable degradation through the spontaneous process of corrosion towards which they naturally tend. On indoor-exposed historical metal surfaces, this phenomenon gives way to the formation of mainly oxide and/or sulfide compounds. For aesthetical or functional purposes, treatment of these surfaces is often carried out to remove the undesired corrosion phases.
Various methods are currently available to professionals for the cleaning of this type of metallic substrate. However, none of them is entirely satisfactory, dealing with hazardous compounds, devices with limited availability or specific necessary skills, not completely efficient or difficult to control, sometimes resulting in the damage of the considered surface. In addition, there is the will to go towards more sustainable practices, taking into account the safety of the object, the operator as well as the environment.
For this reason, research has been looking a t other possibilities, including the use of gels, in particular hydrogels, as carriers for aqueous treating solutions. They allow the con finement of the active solution along with more selective, less invasive application. Parallelly, new tendencies are opting for less toxic and more naturally based solutions. For instance, heritage preservation treatments based on the potential of a variety of microbiological organisms.
To this purpose, the present thesis aims at developing and investigating a corrosion removal treatment combining both approaches, thus achieving a fully bio-derived reliable solution.
The first step was to select adequate biogenic compounds, exploiting fungi and bacteria as microscale chemical factories for the uptake of iron, copper or silver ions. To this end, microbial interaction with soluble and insoluble metals were assessed. In particular, it showed Aspergillus niger’s and Beauveria bassiana’s significant performances to achieve cleaning on iron and copper substrates respectively through the biogenic formation of oxalates. No microorganism could be distinguished for the remediation of silver. In addition, the action of secondary metabolites, mainly siderophores and organic acids, on the dissolution of powdered corrosion products was investigated over time using ICP-OES. In particular, although acids perform outstandingly at low pH, siderophores were confirmed to be remarkable candidates for the chelation of iron at any pH. For copper, the aminopolycarboxylic acid EDDS showed performances competing with EDTA, a common chelator with sustainability concerns. The same compound also achieved reduction of soluble silver into nanoparticles.
As second step, to deliver the metabolites solution, investigation of several polysaccharides was performed. In particular, formulation of a rigid chitosan-based gel was attempted and compared to agar characteristics. In addition, investigation of interactions between the gels and subsequent selected cleaning solutions was carried out. Microscale morphology and mechanical properties showed no evidence for interactions between the polymer network and the carried solutes. The silver uptaking properties of the developed formulation were also evaluated using spectroscopic techniques. These properties could be further exploited to use some hydrogels as “uptaking devices”, allowing to break-free from the use of an additional chelating solution, following the principle of less is more and achieve more simple formulations.
Rheological and oximetric measurements also showed the “residues potential” of non-rigid gels along with their potential deleterious effects, respectively. Attempts at finding methods to detect these residues using imaging techniques achieved qualitative and semi-quantitative results showing that agar was leaving rather bulky, punctual residues whereas xanthan gum’s were spread out on the surface. Evaluation of the combined selected active agents and polysaccharides was performed on artificially and naturally corroded samples using a multi-analytical approach, including spectroscopy, spectrocolorimetry along with elemental analysis and micro and macro-observations. Successful applications were tested on real artefacts obtained from heritage institutions.
Finally, environmental and health hazards of the developed formulations were evaluated using the Life Cycle Cycle AAssessment approach, showing biossessment approach, showing bio--derived compounds might not be, currently, the most derived compounds might not be, currently, the most performing, according to the initial hypothesis and the performing, according to the initial hypothesis and the considered criteria.
Overall, this thesis allowed to develop alternative biologically derived formulations for the removal of corrosion on iron and copper artefacts, corrosion on iron and copper artefacts, with a real step towards effective practical use by professionals. Future work could be foreseen for the use of microbes or metabolites on silver--based surfaces along with further enhancing global sustainability performances
„Fieberhafte Hermetik“. Raum und Heterotopie in Thomas Mann Der Zauberberg (1924)
Exactly 100 years ago, in 1924, Thomas Mann's The Magic Mountain was published, one of the great novels of the modern age, which has long since become part of world literature. However, although space appears in the very title of the novel and the entire setting of a special sanatorium society places place and space at the centre of attention, aspects of spatial theory, in contrast to those relating to the question of time, have hardly been studied in any depth. Approaches, if any, have been almost exclusively mythological. However, since Mann's text also deals in a special way with historical spaces and spatial types of his time (grand hotel, tourist space, clinic, cinema, etc.), this study undertakes a new reading of Thomas Mann's great novel. Michel Foucault's concept of heterotopias is central to this. Heterotopias describe special to extraordinary but real spaces. The examination of how Mann's text epically negotiates and condenses heterotopias is combined in the study with the tracing of Mann's own concept of hermeticism, which allows the special constellation of this hermetic but feverishly moving setting of the novel, far away from the European metropolises, high up in Davos, to be put into perspective.
Thomas Mann's text is related to the discourses of his time and the collective images of the Alps, as well as to a specific Davos discourse. On the one hand, it proves to be more discursively embedded than previously assumed. The Magic Mountain thus appears in a new light as an epochal text of the first half of the twentieth century, which negotiates and bundles discourses, motifs and aspects of its time in one (textual) place. On the other hand, Mann's unique achievement of condensing an existing sanatorium discourse into the "Davos myth", which is still remembered today, is outlined anew.
The study is based on cultural and discourse-historical premises (including Steven Greenblatt's theory of cultural poetics) on the one hand, and on classical results of Thomas Mann research on the other. It is thus a combination and extension of both traditional and more recent approaches to The Magic Mountain

Art Worlds in Situation: Old Methods for a (New) Anthropology of Popular Music and Dance in Migration
The aim of this paper is to highlight how recent anthropological studies of musicians’ and dancers’ activities and networks in migration have attempted to theorize the links between the so-called ‘local’ and ‘global’ by both reviving older ethnographic methods and taking inspiration from recent theories and concepts in the anthropology of migration. It draws on the author’s research on the migration of Senegalese sabar dancers in Europe (mainly France and Switzerland), and on other anthropological studies developed recently about the worlds of music and dance in migration and transnational contexts. After briefly recalling the long history of the intertwining of migration studies and ethnomusicology, it focuses on two main tools that help to grasp the transnational connections and creations that emerge through music and dance and to overcome the simple dichotomy between the local and the global. These methods consist in analyses of ‘social worlds’ and ‘art worlds’ on the one hand and of ‘social situations’ on the other. It is shown how, using these tools, the anthropology of music and dance in migration can find relevant methodologies and epistemologies to overcome the local/global dichotomy and explain how ‘art worlds’ (Becker 2008 [1982]) are built into the interstices between the two scales
