Inwards, Outwards, Upwards. Job’s Threefold Complaint as a Body Metaphor
No full textThis chapter presents a threefold classification of body metaphors within the context of conceptual metaphor theory. These are defined as inwards, outwards and upwards. The chapter presents a critical analysis of the spatial and physical metaphors, which constitute a pervasive theme throughout the entirety of the book. He illustrates how the absence of distinct boundaries between Job's inner self, his social relations with his friends, and his upward direction to God results in confusion and contributes to his unfortunate circumstances. The three orientations of Job are finally presented in a sequence from above to below. This represents a pivotal moment in the narrative of Job, resulting in Job's final utterance directed upwards. This is in contrast to the preceding dialogues, as it does not conclude the poetic part of the book with the tense interpersonal relations of the dialogues, but rather with the communicative relationship with God.
