Song of Songs: Current trends in research
No full textThis paper reviews recent developments in Song of Songs scholarship, focusing on publications in the South African context. To this end, an overview of the interpretation of the Song of Songs will be given and the main lines of research will be outlined, as new research continues to emerge in this area. Research on the Song of Songs continues the trends of recent years. The emphasis continues to be on literal interpretation. However, there is renewed interest in patristics, allegorical interpretation as erotic or intertextual allegorisation, and reception history. Interpretation in the context of a myth seemed outdated, but it is also back. Comparing two transfer spaces over time and against a global script: the case of school-autonomy-with-accountability
No full textThe study compares the selective adoption of the global school-autonomy-with-accountability (SAWA) reform in two cantons of Switzerland (Zurich and St. Gallen) over the period 1995–2015. The authors dissect the SAWA reform into three aspects: its theory of change, its bundle of policies, and its preferred policy instruments to achieve and sustain change. Methodologically, the study draws on a database of over 1,200 policy-relevant documents and expert interviews related to the so-called ‘outcomes-oriented school reform’ (German: wirkungsorientierte Schulreform) or SAWA, respectively. In an endeavor to advance research on policy borrowing, the authors propose a distinction between six temporal features of policy transfer: time, timing, tempo, lifespan, age, and sequence. They find that SAWA’s neoliberal theory of change was not adopted. However, select policies and instruments were transferred and translated into the Swiss context. Furthermore, some policies expanded over time (standardized testing), some were dropped after a while (performance pay), some were kept on the books but, with age, hollowed out over time (external evaluation), and some were long-lived and were institutionalized (professional school management).Publishe

Who benefits the most? Teacher expectations and their relation with students’ achievement in mathematics in primary school
No full textOver the past 50 years, many studies have investigated the impact of teacher expectations on student achievement and indicated small to moderate effects. Currently, it is still unclear which student-related factors (e.g. socioeconomic status, or gender) moderate the expectation effect. There is still a need to gain a better understanding of the relation between teacher expectations and students' characteristics. The present study aims to examine the accuracy of teacher expectations as well as student-related moderators of the expectation effects on students' achievement. The analyses are based on data from a longitudinal study including 28 primary school teachers and their students (N = 509). The results show that high expectations of teachers correlated positively with student achievement in mathematics, although no significant moderating effects were found. These findings strengthen the importance of ensuring high teacher expectations for all students.Schweizerischer NationalfondsPublishe

Song of Songs in Sense, Sound and Space
No full textThis book contributes to original research by offering 13 cutting edge essays on the Song of Songs. It draws on various approaches pertaining to the theme of Sense, Sound and Space. The book is edited into 4 categories, namely, 1) Exegetical and contextual studies; 2) Spatial studies; 3) Comparative studies and 4) Studies in music. In the first category, Fernandes explores the often-ignored figure of Solomon’s in the Song and the allusions to him. Scheffler investigates the controversial place of Song 7.1. Lombaard questions gender equity in the Song and avers that female voices are more prominent than male voices. Landy utilises affect theory in her explanation of the woman as a mare (1.9-11) and the invitation of her return (7.1). Kim compares interpretations of Song 7 by Keel, Black and her own through the lens of Umberto Eco’s semiotic models emphasising the subjectivity of interpretation. Potgieter and Lombaard analyses Paul Decock’s interpretations of Origen and Bernard of the Song.In the second category, Fischer applies Lefebvre’s spatial theory to the Song underscoring the physical space of the protagonist. Dantonel discovers several spatial domains in both the Song and Proverbs namely spring; the well and vineyard along with the enduring love: mother’s house; door and window. In the third category, Volkonski collates Early Arabic poetic techniques and the Song to demonstrate fresh possibilities for interpreting the Song. Recalcati searches parallels between the Song and Hellenistic epigrammatic poetry within the Anthologia Palatina. Biermann investigates the metaphor ‘set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm’ in 8.6 by means of cognitive linguistics and sensory archaeology. In the fourth category, Boyce-Tillman amalgamates her reading of the Song with her musical compositions to redesign themes of fertility, the body, ecotheology and apophatic theology.
