Children\u27s Books for Minorities in Poland
No full textThe paper consists of three parts:
Parts one and two analyze and describe the communicative and therapeutic functions that concern children and adolescents in multicultural settings in Poland. Publishing activities of/for ethnic minority groups are presented: books and periodicals specialty addressed to young readers; libraries (both public and those created by national associations) collecting publications and serving ethnic users. The role and situation of ethnic schools and their libraries are also discussed. Part three presents a picture of ethnic and national minorities in Polish literature for children and the youth. Special attention is paid to Gypsies, Germans, and Jews
The Impact of a Technology-Rich Environment
No full textThe lottery funding for technology in the state of Georgia has reshaped the directions of K-12 schools and redefined education at all levels. The use of technology has improved information access and provided new means for information retrieval.The impact of technology integration on teaching and learning is evident in many of Georgia’s schools. The discrepancies in the allocation of state funding across school levels and among regions, however, have widened the gap between the “information rich” and the “information poor.” This paper describes the impact of Georgia’s Technology Initiative on information access, teaching, and learning. It will address key issues for creating a technology-rich environment and provides recommendations for technology implementation

School Libraries Role in Connected Learning: Perception of School Librarians in Nigeria
No full textConnected learning (CL) aims at bridging the gap between in-school and out-of-school learning, thus, learning now takes place not only in the classroom setting. Libraries as nexus of informal learning space are appropriate spaces for connected learning. Observation shows that CL has not been embraced in Nigeria. Therefore, this study examined the perception of school librarians on the roles of school libraries in CL, challenges of CL, and solutions. School librarians that attended the national workshop organized by the Nigerian School Library Association (NSLA) participated in the focus group discussion. Remembrance in Action: Educating and Responding to the Holocaust in today’s world
No full textA school librarian and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Teacher Fellow addresses the challenge of teaching 21st century learners about the Holocaust, demonstrating how to enrich collaborative instruction and library programing through innovative Museum resources. This paper highlights “History Unfolded,” the Museum’s growing database of WWII era newspapers promoting historical thinking and media literacy; “Experiencing History,” a primary source digital learning tool; the availability of Museum exhibitions and supplemental Holocaust projects that can be successfully implemented by school library practitioners worldwide. As we face a resurgence of neo-Nazism and increased Anti-Semitism, school librarians can be transformational leaders in Holocaust education initiatives, encouraging an equitable and inclusive environment in the greater community. 
Reinventing your Reference Collection
No full textSchool libraries are changing constantly due to technological and organizational changes. One of the areas of the library most affected by change is the print reference collection. This presentation will provide an overview of the changing nature of the reference collection in the school library and a justification for maintaining a reference collection in a 21st century library. A significant part of the presentation will include resources, ideas, and strategies for a reference collection development plan. The presentation will specifically address important decision points for collection development, including selection and de-selection of print resources, electronic reference resources, virtual reference, and integrating the reference collection into an information inquiry program

No full textThis study confirms the gap between the competency of “school librarian” in education and that in action. The authors carried out the semi-structured interviews with eight persons who had experience of working as a school librarian. The authors asked them whether they thought that it was necessary to learn the competency in the list made by authors, and whether they utilized that at their works. As a result, most of the competencies was required at work, moreover, it was necessary to learn in education. According to their answers, the authors recognized following things. Firstly, there was little need to learn some competencies in the categories of library management and organization of materials. Secondly, the competencies about history, other types of library and school librarianship of foreign countries should be learned in education, though those were not utilized at work. Thirdly, the competency of pedagogy should be added to the list
Examining awareness and utilization of digital content in Japanese schools via library administrators at elementary, junior high, and high schools
No full textThe authors decided to focus on electronic resources within school libraries and examine current conditions and see what awareness there is of the broader issue of the digitalization of school libraries. we propose taking the survey results and focusing on school library administrators, examining their awareness and utilization of digital resources and how they relate to "reading" in general. Currently, digital resources are not available in about 70% of school libraries. However, nearly 50% of school library administrators indicated they would like to utilize digital resources. Additionally, it was found that around 70% of school library administrators consider reading of digital content to fall within the category of "reading"
Collaborative Leadership in School Library Learning Commons : New Canadian Standards and New Possibilities
No full textWe have a brand new school library standards document in Canada to assist schools with transitioning to futures oriented teaching and learning. Leading Learning: Standards of Practice for School Library Learning Commons in Canada was officially released to the world in June 2014 and is now finding its way into strategic planning around the country. The publication of Leading Learning is an event of true historic significance. As the document says, “Learners have a right to expect good school libraries in every school in Canada.” Standards can indeed help measure practice, but Leading Learning does much more. By focusing on the needs of the learner, Leading Learning provides a framework for growth. Every school, no matter the status of its library program, can find itself in this framework and decide on tangible steps for improvement. The development of Leading Learning brought together input from every province and territory in the country, and successfully developed standards for growth that are meaningful within this very disparate context. This is a remarkable achievement
