Library Funding and Reading Promotion Improve Reading Motivation, Family Cultural Capital, and Academic Achievement Among Students in Vietnam
Overseas charitable organizations often play a crucial role in fostering educational and cultural development in developing countries. Taiwan’s Zhi-Shan Foundation (hereinafter referred to as “Zhi-Shan”) has been establishing school libraries and promoting reading programs in rural counties and cities in Vietnam since 2008. This study analyzes dif erences in reading engagement, academic performance, and family cultural capital between students in schools funded by Zhi-Shan and those in nonfunded schools. The study objectives are to determine the ef ectiveness of the foundation’s reading programs and the relationships between students’ reading engagement, academic performance, and family cultural capital by using structural equation modeling
Reading Perceptions of Intrinsically Motivated High School Juniors
The basic research question addressed in the study is “What are the experiences in the lives of juniors (aged 16-18) in high school that foster intrinsic motivation to read for pleasure?” An examination of these experiences can lead to an understanding of how juniors in high school are able to maintain their intrinsic motivation to read for pleasure to reap the academic benefits afforded to avid readers. It is the purpose of this study to provide educators and librarians with insight into high school students’ needs to facilitate reading for pleasure
Online Ready: Designing Culturally Competent and Impactful K-12 Online Learning
Despite the school library profession’s long-standing and prominent role in technology leadership and technology-enabled learning, as well as pre-pandemic growth in K-12 online education, the ability to design and facilitate fully online K-12 instruction is not an integralcomponent of school library preparation programs (Green et al., 2017). The nation’s abrupt pivot to remote schooling due to COVID-19 highlighted this knowledge gap: school librarians had little time, support, or energy to acquire or deploy effective practices forculturally competent and inclusive online instruction, or digital environment development, despite having unique skills in technology tools and information literacy skills that help online learning flourish (McLaughlin & Resta, 2020). The profession needs to move away from emergency remote teaching and toward a more sustainable, flourishing, and responsive vision for online K-12 librarianship
Teacher Librarians Supporting STEM Education
STEM education is an approach to teaching and learning that integrates the content and skills of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics; which promotes critical thinking, higher-order thinking, and problem solving (NSTA, 2020). This research was conducted with the purpose of identifying the influence of this PD on improving teacher librarians’ knowledge, skills, and abilities to support STEM education efforts in their schools. This study utilized a pre/post-test quasi- experimental design to determine the influence of the PD on teacher librarians’ knowledge, skills, and abilities to support STEM education (Creswell, 2013). The pre-test data confirms previous research, that there is a significant gap in the knowledge, skills, and abilities of school librarians when it comes to supporting STEM education efforts in their schools. Additionally, school librarians aren’t being offered many professional growth opportunities to further their knowledge in this area. Post-test data provides information on the influence that the PD had on the participants\u27 knowledge, skills, and perceived abilities in supporting STEM education
School Library eBook Providers and Spanish Language Equity: A Replication Analysis of eBook Collections Available to School Libraries
The goal of this study is to revisit and contrast the original data from a previous publication entitled, “School Library eBook Providers and Spanish Language Equity: An Analysis of eBook Collections Available to School Libraries.” The original study examined the collections of eBooks in Spanish provided by vendors of library resources to school libraries to determine if there are equitable offerings of eBooks in Spanish relative to the Spanish-speaking school population in the United States. The processes in that study were replicated where possible and expanded upon for shared understanding
School Libraries and Information Literacy Education in Lithuania: State-of-Art and Survey Findings
A self-responding questionnaire (26 items in 3 sections: 1. General information on the school and its library; 2. Information literacy education; 3. The school library role in the school life) was administered in Autumn 2021 to 651 school libraries in Lithuania to investigate how they are organized and positioned, and their role in information literacy education. The main findings show strengths (e.g., opening hours, the school librarian as an information and cultural professional) and weaknesses (e.g., missing PD in Information Literacy). The research provides useful foundations for further investigations and interventions to improve the school library role and profession, as discussed with the President of LMBDA
Middle Schoolers Make Great Book Reviewers
Demystify the book review process for your students by teaching them to write their own book reviews. Middle schoolers have definite opinions about what they read. Book reviewing teaches them to articulate their views and share them with their peers. Book reviews are authentic writing practice and an opportunity for students to consider purpose and audience. Using this flexible unit curriculum any school librarian can teach students in grades 6-8 to review books over six meetings

Utilization of Assistive Technology for Effective School Library Service Delivery to Students with Disabilities in Nigeria
Disability is a part of the human condition. Everyone might experience disability either permanently or temporarily at some point in their life. It was estimated that about 25 million people live with one form of disability or more. This study explored the utilization of assistive technology for effective school library service delivery to students with disabilities in Nigeria. The study adopted descriptive survey design and used online structured questionnaires to collect data from school librarians. A total of 240 school librarians responded to the online survey across the 36 states in Nigeria. Data collected through online questionnaires were analyzed using percentage, mean and standard deviation. The study revealed that, there is inadequate availability of assistive technologies for effective school library service delivery to students with disabilities in Nigeria. Also, the extent of utilization of assistive technologies for effective school library service delivery was very low except for braille technology and Hearing Aids. The major challenges associated with the utilization of assistive technology for effective school library service delivery to students with disabilities in Nigeria are lack of support from the government, inadequate assistive technology in the school libraries, ranked together with inadequate funding of the school libraries; and unstable electric power supply. The study recommended; Provision of adequate assistive technology in the school libraries by the government. Training of both students with disabilities and school librarians in the use of assistive technology. Developing adequate interest in inclusive school library service by the government. Adequate funding of the school libraries by the government. Adequate support from the government through provision of material and human resources. Provision of adequate support service on the use of assistive technology by the manufacturers or vendors. Provision of stable electric power supply through installing solar power systems or purchasing standby generators
Opportunities for Autism information Shared through Professional Conferences
With prevalence most recently reported at 1 in 44 (Maenner et al., 2021) children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in the United States, school librarians can and should expect to see these children in their schools and in their libraries. However, previous work indicates that school librarians are not being provided with an adequate education about this in their graduate coursework (Layden, Anderson, & Hayden, 2021). This study expands upon previous work to explore the preparation of school librarians about autism by examining the previous five years of state library conference programs
