Capturing the Information-seeking of Students Employing a Wearable Camera: Discussions of Application in School Libraries
No full textUtilizing wayfinding, think-aloud protocol (TAP), retrospective think-aloud protocol (RTAP), and a wearable camera, the actions, thoughts and feelings of an autistic college freshman and a neurotypical peer are recorded as they navigate their campus library in search of materials. The library website, virtual maps to resource locations, and library workers served equally as enablers and barriers to both students in their information seeking. This proof of concept study demonstrates that participant viewpoint ethnography is a viable research methodology that could be applied in school libraries for both neurotypical and autistic students

Variety of notes are intended to support general user tasks, as well as specific user tasks of school library users. The study reported in this paper examined levels and patterns of application of summary notes, audience notes, grade level notes, reading interest level notes, study program information notes, table of contents notes etc. in the bibliographic records created by the United States Library of Congress Children’s and Young Adults’ Cataloguing Program for fiction books between 2014 and 2020
Effect of library orientation on School libraries in Japan
No full textTo make the better use of the school library, library orientation plays a very important role. Library orientation is not only teach students how to use the library, but also have effects the Life-long learning. This study aims to clarify the following two points; (1) whether the students remember or not about library orientation, (2) the effects of the library orientation in the school library. The data were collected via a questionnaire survey with 1,540 freshman belong to the university of Tsukuba. A total number of 226 (14.7%) survey responses were collected from the students. Students who remember about library orientation was 58 percent. The result of the study suggests that if the library orientation has been carried out effectively, it will be attract more students to come to the library. Otherwise, the use of the library will become less and less, and will be forgotten in the end
School Libraries in the English Education of Japan: From the Perspectives of Practitioners
No full textIn Japan, English has been taught as a foreign language. For surviving in the quickly changing 21st century, students have to learn English more autonomously, gathering authentic input by themselves. Though school libraries can be a solution to such problems, appeal to English educators is not sufficient and such educators do not fully understand the possibilities offered by school libraries. The voices of practitioners of English education who utilise school libraries were needed in this respect. This study shared the perspectives of practitioners, using interviews in order to reveal the potential uses of school libraries. The study concluded with the possibility that school libraries can form an English learning environment in which students’ autonomy is cultivated and authentic input is provided

No full textDiscusses the American Broadway musical as performed in American high schools and concentrates on prosocial behaviors that are featured in these musicals and available in digital formats. The paper describes prosocial behaviors as “[...] a broad range of actions intended to benefit one or more people other than oneself – behaviors such as helping, comforting, sharing and cooperation.” Prosocial behavior can also be understood as “[...] a type of helping behavior [extended to others] that ultimately confers some benefits to the self.” This paper expands on these descriptions to include the following: acceptance of self and others; honoring commitments; appreciation of diversity; deciding on a direction in life; recognizing oppression, prejudice, and stereotyping; appreciation of self-awareness; and comfort with self-expression (Cherry). No full textMany of the Tohoku region of the school library were affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake. Takata high school at Iwate Prefecture in the Tohoku region cases that suffered catastrophic damage during the tsunami. Many of the school materials that were in the school library gets wet with seawater. It was carried out relief activities of such documents. Restoration method that using water washing and the flat drying is up to professional standard. However, it adopted a method to be able to easily perform at low cost and can perform a restoration by few exercises

Substantive studies have been conducted on leadership in technology integration by National Board Certified teacher librarians, enablers and barriers to technology leadership by teacher librarians, leadership in state initiatives related to digital textbooks, leadership with e-books and electronic devices, one-to-one computing, and school librarian leadership education. This paper provides an overview of that research and presents implications for teacher librarian education
Mind the gap: School Librarians’ Anticipated and Preferred Professional Development Methods for Integration of Digital Textbooks
No full textWhile the mandate to adopt digital textbooks in the U.S. state of Florida is looming for the next school year, there has been few discussion about how to provide professional development for school librarians who will be expected to play a leadership role. This study identifies both preferred and anticipated methods of professional development of Florida school librarians and the gap between them. It has been found that school librarians wish to initiate their training with other colleagues through workshops and study groups, which will enable them to discuss digital textbooks, and build networks with respect to the new technology. The anticipated way, however, reflects the environment of solo librarians. In conclusion, this study urges that professional development that will enlarge their viewpoint and enhance their awareness of the need for methods of implementation of digital textbooks, is urgently required
