Rendering a Comprehensive School and Community Library Service to Remote Rural Communities in South Africa by Forging Partnerships
No full textSubstantial backlogs in public and school library services in South Africa, especially in the previously disadvantaged, remote rural areas, compel library authorities to explore alternative, more cost-effective ways of library service delivery. This paper describes a South African study which investigated the variants of the school-community library model worldwide, with the aim of defining a South African prototype, which would satisfy the needs of a rural, tribal community. The paper also discusses how this prototype is currently being piloted in a rural, tribal area in the Mpumalanga province by forging partnerships with various stakeholders
Constructing a Digital Academic Press Platform Using Content Management System
No full textWith the rapid development of internet applications, the patterns of academic press change obviously, therefore this research attempt to establish a academic publishing platform, which based on the content management systems (CMS), from a editor’s point of view in practice. Through the flow and version control of the CMS, the capability and feasibility of the online editor team had been observed. Moreover, the conformity of information and the dissemination improvement also had been taken into account. We anticipate the technologies of content management lead-in the patterns of academic press can improve the editing process efficiency regarding to version control, change, save, publishing and information exchange. The whole CMS system for online publishing had been implemented and two kinds of different academic press in Hsuan Chuang University, one print version and the other online version, had been choosen. The editing and publishing process had been evaluated. Finally, some results and suggestions had been provided
Information Seeking Behaviours of Educators: Fostering Webs of Sharing and Co-Constructing Knowledge
No full textTeacher education research draws a link between teachers’ access to resources and effect on planning practices, yet gaps exist in the study of how educator find, access, and use online information. This paper presents study findings from research that investigated the online information seeking behaviors of biology teachers and their perceptions of how their online activities influence their instructional practices. The often overlapping roles of teachers as both facilitators and recipients of information through formal and informal online social networks are discussed. Study findings have potential implications for schoollibrary media specialists work with teachers.

This paper will look at definitions of collaborative practice, relevant research, the critical role of the teacher librarian, information process models and the underpinning pedagogy of learning communities, information literacy and constructivist learning. It will present a range of strategies at the macro level for developing opportunities for collaboration with teaching staff and library colleagues and at the micro level, strategies to enable the collaboration to occur in an effective and integrated way once avenues of communication and other forums have been set up
Using MOODLE to Help Teach About Plagiarism and Copyright

Students undertaking their Higher School Certificate exam in 2008 will now have to complete a subject entitled “All My Own Work” completely devoted to understanding plagiarism, copyright and collusion. A Framework for e-Library Services to Support the e-Learning Environment in a Secondary School: A Case Study
No full textThis paper proposes an ICT-based framework that incorporates e-library services into the e-learning environment. There has been wide recognition that the integration of elibrary services within e-learning environments is lacking. The literature suggests that there is no formal collaboration between teachers, students and librarians in the course of the proposing, acquiring and utilising of e-library resources. The proposed framework defines different scenarios, roles and learning cycles that support different interactions within the e-learning process. The system is expected to provide greater opportunities to fulfil students’ needs with less time and effort

School Librarians Coping with Electronic Environments
No full textThis paper focuses on abilities of librarians to adapt and respond to the constantly emerging changes influenced by the advancement of ICT. The authors emphasize the necessity of defining and promoting new concept and understanding of the school library in electronic environment. Traditional school library roles need to adapt and change to respond to the needs of new users growing up in the interactive and information overloaded environment. Many of the aspects of current school library tasks and roles originate from a print-based culture which is incongruent with the transient and hybrid nature of digital environments. These radically changing environments are posing different tasks on school librarians leading them to balance carefully between the traditional school environments, infrastructure, institutions hierarchy and with the various new needs of “Google generation” users. Taking into account all the changes in the information environment authors emphasise the necessary improvements in education of school librarians

School Libraries Archive Community Images
No full textAs multiculturalism is becoming a world value, the creation, culture, and common memory of the community nowadays should be the running water source of “The National Digital Archives Program.” However, while we are making great efforts to improve the creation of the local cultural community and multicultural development, the connotations of the community culture, as well as the local anecdotes, which are closely related to our daily lives, are definitely worth recording and passing down. Thus, as a place of knowledge collecting and culture reservation, the school library should play a more positive role in the community changes which are related to the economic development, the urban style, the basic necessities of life, the languages, and the humanity characteristics. One of the important tendencies in the present education reform in Taiwan is the cooperation between the school and the community. With the school library open to the public, the number of people that the school serves will increase and the interaction between the school and the community residents will be more frequent. If the school library has a good interaction with the local community residents, it will become a wonderful place for the community residents to have access to gaining knowledge and receiving lifelong learning. Therefore, with the application of the digital technology in the library, the digital archives of the community cultural images can not only preserve related data effectively but also disseminate and introduce the local history and characteristics to the world through the Internet. In addition, they can be served as valuable digital cultural materials for people to learn, to educate and to study. The study attempts to archive the community images by promoting the creation of digital images. Through the conformity of school teaching activities, the promotion of the use of the library, and intervention the community cultural events, we encourage teachers, students and the residents to record the history, geography, customs and humanity of the community by means of the creation of digital images, documentaries for example. As a result, we hope that the digital image of the common memory of the community would be created gradually and the library would be more multi-functional and become a place to keep the local data, to improve the understanding of the community, to offer the teaching materials and to raise the local consciousness
