Outlines issues related to children\u27s access and barriers to information. An analysis of research methodology used is provided. Offers suggestions on the future research direction with emphasis on the Malaysian school libraries environment
Searching for Knowledge: Teaching Information Technology to Secondary Students
No full textThis paper discusses the importance of accurate knowledge to a knowledge-based society and presents the rationale, organization, and content of a short course in electronic search skills that enables students to retrieve accurate information by evaluating their searches, citations, and resources in a variety of databases. Focusing on the Seven Steps in the electronic search process, the course develops students\u27 skills in thinking, computer literacy, and the ethical use of information. Students learn the concepts, process, and skills of information literacy and technology as they integrate the results of their searches into subject areas across the secondary curriculum. A syllabus and daily topics are included. 
The Fight Against HIV/AIDS: Are the School Libraries at the Battle Front?
No full textHIV / AIDS has impacted history in a uniquely global manner. Sub -Saharan Africa has been very hard hit, Botswana the hardest hit. The onslaught of this viral war is being counteracted from many battlefronts. The study examines data from twenty of Botswana\u27s educational libraries to determine how much, and to what extent they are providing information on HIV /AIDS in varied formats. The finding reveal there is very little information provision. In the assessment of the librarians, they are doing what they can with what little is available. The study concludes with the cry for better co-ordinated effort perhaps regional in scope
Digital Literacy for Electronic Encyclopedias
No full textThe purpose of this research was to examine the information-seeking processes employed by junior high school students from Inuvik, Northwest Territories, Canada when using CD-ROM encyclopedias. The study revealed that participants needed both instruction and practice to develop the skills and strategies needed for fall-text searching of CD-ROM encyclopedias. The participants tended to use search terms only from the original question, had difficulty selecting topics and articles from the retrieved list, and did not read long articles as carefully as short articles. Instruction related to information-- seeking skills and strategies should focus on generating search terms, selecting topics from a retrieved list, and, skimming and scanning through text to find the answer
Competencies for Teacher-Librarians: The Malaysian Perspective
No full textTeacher-librarians need specific competencies, knowledge, and skills in order to perform their roles effectively. Very few guidelines and standards exist, however, in developing countries for these competencies. The primary goal of this study was to determine the competencies needed by teacher-librarians in Malaysian secondary schools to effectively perform their roles. The study employed a survey methodology using a population of professionals directly involved in the field of teacher-librarianship: teacher-librarians, library educators, and supervisors. The findings present a Malaysian perspective on the roles and competencies for teacher-librarians and will also be useful in working towards an international framework of competencies

The School Librarian as Internet Mediator: A Case Study and Evaluation
No full textCase studies can be viewed as either having intrinsic interest or as exploratory studies which can be used by subsequent researchers to inform theory. Case studies are not generalizable to populations, as surveys might be, but are generalizable to theory and may have an impact on the development of theory in areas of research. This particular case study relates to the role of the school librarian as Internet mediator and its findings highlight the value of WWW resources in curricular terms and emphasis the key role taken by the school librarian in identifying and exploiting such resources in co-operation with teachers

No full textAs the IASL conference themes in Long Beach (2017), Istanbul (2018), and Dubrovnik (2019) have influenced progression, impact, and innovation around school libraries, it is interesting to focus on how ordinary school librarians best adopt fields where communication on a higher level marks the spot! The theme for this paper will work as a useful contribution to different methods, practically applied in Sweden for over ten years. Methods of communication that function as an inspiration to the higher governmental work and processes for school libraries, both on a national and international level.
