A Study on Implementing Internet Resources in Digitization of School Libraries
No full textIn recent years people have seen a boom in the development of technology; therefore, Internet has been playing an increasingly important role in learning .The fastest developed information service system on the Internet is World Wide Web. WWW transmits all kinds of information via multimedia. Students would rather find information by surfing the net than do it by going to a library. Digital learning has become a tendency. Many school libraries have digitized their libraries. However, some libraries, especially those of elementary and high schools, do not have the budget to do so. Fortunately, many Internet resources are free. The purpose of this research is: if we can categorize useful Internet resources as we do with books, record the web addresses , give description of them in a clear web design page, and then put the web design page on the web site of the school library, we can offer them to the teachers and students who need these Internet resources. It not only complements the electronic collections of school libraries but also promotes the digitization of them

Taipei municipal government was aware of the importance and started a 4-year program of “ Emergent Literacy and Reading for Children” since 2003 in order to facilitate a quality environment for reading atmosphere through a variety of creative reading activities. Hoping that children can start their own journey in the world of books. The “Emergent Literacy and Reading” program has open the door to a wonderful world of reading full of imagination for the children. The efforts of this program has been devoted to the youngsters and hopefully will develop a reading culture of Taipei
Profiling the Reading Habits of Children in Singapore
No full textThe leisure reading contributes significantly in improving language competencies of children. This study investigates the reading habits and preferences of children, motivations behind reading, and their attitude towards reading. A pre-tested questionnaire was used for collecting data and 440 upper primary students participated in the study. The findings suggest that a majority of the participating students were motivated to read for academically-related reasons, such as to improve language skills and to obtain better grades in examinations. Reading was the third most preferred leisure activity after hobbies and playing on computer or the Internet. It was also found that girls were generally more avid readers than boys. This paper offers certain suggestions for promoting reading habits among children
Information Literacy Practices in Brazilian School Libraries: Librarian Collaboration with Teachers
No full textBased on the assumption that collaboration of librarians with teachers is central to the concept of information literacy, this study aims to understand the vision of the librarian with regard to collaboration, if he/she realizes the difficulties in this collaboration and in what way he/she seeks to collaborate. A qualitative/interpretative methodology was used and data were collected through reports of experiences, interviews and group discussion. The sample was composed of 28 school librarians (14 from public schools and 14 from private institutions). Results show that librarians not only understand the need for collaboration with teachers for the success of their educational practice, but also engage themselves in concrete actions to achieve that collaboration, which reveals a pro-active attitude, different from the projected image of a professional isolated from school life. This attitude indicates that Brazilian school librarians are starting to build the foundations for their educational practice, which could pave the way for the establishment of information literacy programs in Brazilian schools
Elementary School Students\u27 Perceptions of Libraries and Librarians
No full textElementary school students in Grades 3 to 8 in eight schools that had exemplary library programs were surveyed about their perceptions of the school library program and the teacher librarian. Students reported that the teacher librarian was knowledgeable and helpful and taught them key information literacy concepts. The library program supported them in reading for pleasure. The physical space of the library was significant to them and they perceived the library as a welcoming place used for multiple activities

Student Learning Through Inquiry: A Study of a High School Project
No full textQualitative research methods were used to examine high school students’ experience of an inquiry project. Student inquiry is foundational to the school curriculum in Alberta, Canada. The teacher and teacher-librarian collaboratively planned and implemented an inquiry project to engage students in developing a deeper understanding of a topic that the teachers believed would be of interest and relevance to the students, the need for greater human understanding. The primary study data came from the students who completed three reflections on their experiences, using the SLIM Toolkit forms, developed by researchers at the Center for International Scholarship in School Libraries at Rutgers University, USA

Reasons why combined libraries may or may not be successful are discussed. Determining, Implementing, and Evaluating Training for School Librarians in Rural China: A Case Study
No full textThis paper describes the development of a training program for primary and middle school librarians in rural China. There are three full-day training sessions. Phase 1 focuses on the role of school librarian and librarian survival skills, including: creating a welcoming library, rudimentary library organisation, simple book repair etc. Phase 2 focuses on reading promotion and activities and an introduction to collection development and book selection. Phase 3: focuses on incorporating reading into curriculum and addresses the link between reading and academic achievement and interaction with teachers. To date phases 1 and 2 have been completed in three provinces
