Distance Education During the Covid-10 Epidemic as a Challenge and Opportunity for the Personal and Professional Development of a School Librarian
No full textDue to the COVID-19 epidemic, all schools had to close their doors last year. Classes moved to a virtual environment, and students and teachers were left without the opportunity to visit school libraries overnight. Therefore, the school library of the Prva gimnazija Maribor has operated smoothly throughout the time of the epidemic and strives to facilitate the work of students, teachers, and other employees as much as possible, continue to promote reading, develop reading and information literacy, and at the same time enrich the educational process. The article presents how we found our way to our readers despite the difficult situation
School Library Design, Facilities and Resources for Sustainable Cognitive and Social Development of Students: An Evaluative Case Study
No full textThe purpose of this study was to examine the circumstances that prompted the school administrators to construct a new library that included modern library spaces, resources and facilities, to find out the strategies used to build the new library and to determine the perceived effects that the new spaces, resources and facilities have on students’ cognitive and social development. This research took an evaluative case study approach. Purposive sampling was used to select the school principal, the school librarian and eight students. The principal and school librarian were interviewed and open ended interview schedules were administered to the students. The findings revealed that the design of the library, the resources and the facilities had a positive impact on students’ cognitive and social development. It was recommended that the Ministry of Education Youth and Information re-design or construct similar school libraries on a phase basis because of the positive educational impact

No full textThe arrival of increasing numbers of refugees and immigrants has caused large increases in multicultural school populations. This interdisciplinary paper describes an ongoing study which began in 2012, discussing the role of the school library in multicultural, multilingual school communities and offering suggestions about how the school library could become a multicultural learning environment. It provides information to help school library staff to look closely at these issues and to provide help and useful suggestions to the entire school community. The prime objective is to help the school community to safely and constructively deal with the dynamics of a multi-cultural society, using the school library as a base. Safe facilitation requires “trained” leaders from the school community. An e-learning program for school librarians is being adapted for this purpose
School Library Research Rocks : An Examination of Five Years of School Library Research
No full textThis research examined the state-of-the-art of research in school librarianship. Similar trends from previous research were confirmed: research in school librarianship is published in two major journals -- School Library (Media) Research and School Libraries Worldwide. Almost 80% of the research was carried out in the United States. There is a small core group of researchers working in the area of school librarianship. About half of all research is by a single author. The main themes from the research included collaboration between teachers and school librarian, technology integration, the instructional role of school librarians, professional development, analysis of materials, information literacy instruction, practices and assessment, hiring, professional development and retention of school librarians, use of multimedia resources, role of school librarians in the provision of health information, motivation of students, and research in other parts of the world.
Frameworks (Aharony, 2011; Koufogiannakis, Slater & Crumley, 2005; Mardis, 2011) were incomplete and the authors present a new framework for categorizing school library research, in particular, but also LIS research, in general
Educational activities of the School Library of the School Teaching Centre of Basic Education of UFMG
No full textWorking in a school library requires a professional who combines his library science técnias with knowledge of Education. From the premise that the library is no longer an accumulation of space but now a place of dissemination of knowledge, its performance changes, is increased. Thus, in 2013, the School Teaching Centre of Basic Education Library was called to offer one GTD – WGD - Working Group Differential - for students of the second cycle of human development. The GTD is a present discipline in the curriculum of Teaching Centre. The overall objective of GTD "storytelling" was to interest students of the second cycle of human training to become storytellers. The search activity to the dictionary, with a view to enriching the vocabulary, was called "The Word is". The librarian working together with teachers demonstrates the importance of this partnership and the good achieved consequences
College-Level Information Literacy Framework: Teacher Librarians can Prepare Students
No full textU.S. K12 education increasingly emphasizes the need for students to be college and career ready; nevertheless, too many student come unprepared to learn effectively. This paper discusses the roles that teacher librarians can play in facilitating such readiness, especially in light of information and digital literacy. First, the American Association of School Librarians standards for 21st century learners and the Association of College and Research Libraries new Information Literacy Framework are detailed, noting implications for education and librarians. Next, models of effective articulation do exist, and strategies for optimizing articulation should be considered. Teacher librarians should collaborate with their post-secondary librarian counterparts; by articulating curriculum either to identify equivalencies or to build upon prior learning, librarians can promote seamless transfer from one level to another – including to the workplace
Social Marketing: An Impact Strategy for School Libraries in Times of Change
No full textSocial marketing as a concept was developed in the 1970s to help improve overall society and to bring about positive social changes. The concept of social marketing was first presented by Zaltman, Kotler, and Kaufman, in their 1972 book, Creating Social Change. This paper addresses the role of social marketing with specific examples of how social marketing associated with educational research can be applied to school libraries. Social marketing is based on general marketing principles and strategies aimed at selling products and services to consumers but with the purpose of improving society by providing socially relevant information; changing existing actions; and improving individual or group behaviors, attitudes or beliefs; and reinforcing desired behaviors. Since the 1970s, social marketing has been used widely in the United States to promote a variety of pro-social behaviors including: reducing smoking, reducing drug abuse, preventing heart disease, promoting contraceptive use, and promoting organ donation. In recent years the U.S. government has used social marketing to encourage enrollment in the controversial Affordable Health Care program. These marketing approaches are theoretically encased in well-conceived educational and public information programs and management. This paper will provide examples of social marketing research methods and results as used by the presenter in school and public libraries youth services. The paper will likewise highlight resources helpful to school librarians in designing and implementing social marketing strategies
