    No full text
The iCentre at Iona Presentation College has created a unique program that merges the traditional aspects of information literacy, study skills and critical and creative thinking into a holistic program. It traverses all year levels and embraces various learning groups and curriculum support programs. No full text
In modern society, how to improve students\u27 cognitive abilities is an important challenge facing high schools. The school library as the information center of the school should fully play its role in addressing this challenge. With the help of Evergreen Education Foundation, the library team of Danfeng High School located in a rural county of western China, initiated the collaboration with subject teachers to guide students in learning. After several years of experiments, we found that the inquiry-based learning projects jointly developed by librarians and teachers can help improve students\u27 cognitive abilities. This paper studied an example of these projects, “Cultural Differences and Geographical Environment" project, co-developed by a geography teacher and a librarian. By reviewing the project process and assessing its outcomes, we summarized the design factors contributed to the improvement of the students’ cognitive abilities, and reflected upon what can be done better, to benefit the future development

The Department of Library and Information Studies (DLIS) at the University of the West Indies, Mona campus presently offers the Master of Library and Information Studies (39 credits) and the Master of Arts in Library and Information Studies (36 credits). These programs offer a wide range of courses over two to three years. As a result of the decrease in registration and the heavy demand for a multi-modal delivery approach, the DLIS has written a proposal to the university to implement the two postgraduate programs in this format. The Our Virtual Learning Environment (OurVLE) has been selected as the learning support system for these programs as its features are ideal for multi-modal delivery. The DLIS awaits final approval from the campus-wide committee

    No full text
The study sought to determine the attitudes of high school librarians in Israel, a country whose population is characterized by modern western outlook and norms on one hand and deeply rooted tradition and conservatism on the other. A questionnaire including, besides demographic questions, 17 statements concerning censorship, was mailed to 442 schools (two-thirds of the population) and yielded 187 usable replies, a 42.3% response rate. A positive correlation was found between the librarians\u27 attitude regarding censorship, both in principle and in practice, and the sectorial affiliation of their school: librarians in the orthodox sectors displayed greater agreement with censorship, probably striving to conserve traditional values

In the 21st century, knowledge economy has been growing rapidly. In order to strengthen knowledge competitiveness and face the international competition of the new century, Taiwan should achieve the educational goal of lifelong learning, widely build up learning organizations, tend citizens who can learn through lives, and positively give impetus to whole people reading program. To meet the coming of learning society, knowledge management has become the key to tap the treasury of library-using education. Knowledge can be fully developed only by close sharing and intellectual interchange. Thus, it can diffuse effectively. Reading and pursuing knowledge are the motive power of working out one’s potentialities and inciting creative thinking. “Knowledge is power” is a wise saying of Francis Bacon, a British philosopher. He also stated, “Histories make men wise; poets, witty; the mathematics, subtle; natural philosophy, deep; moral, grave; logic and rhetoric, able to contend.” This statement brings out very profound meanings. It verifies that reading can not only absorb the essence of books, but broaden one’s general knowledge. The Btitish Education Secretary, David Blunkett, said, “Turning the pages of a book is to open a window on the world. Books are the foundation on which other learning can be built.” The saying well indicates that reading is the communication between mind and mind. It is also a valuable secret of being vigorous and keeping away from loneliness

    No full text
This paper presents the current situation of the school library teams’ specific training in the Portuguese Integrated Elementary Schools that in 2005 were already in the Portuguese School Libraries’ Network. Other countries’ studies, like the ones from the USA and UK, suggest that students achieve higher levels of literacy, learning and problem solving when teacher librarians have specific training to perform their duties. The analysis of data gathered from a questionnaire shows that 32% of the Portuguese school librarians do not have any kind of specific training. This scenario suggests that there hasn’t been any significant improvement since 10 years ago especially in what school librarians’ training is concerned

    No full text
Taiwan is one of the several Asian countries which highly value higher education investment. Students feel so heavy about study pressure that they seldom make habits of getting into libraries; in other words, they only read rare extracurricular books. But in the past ten years, our school library tried hard to further the possibility of promoting reading environment and developing the model of organizing reading groups. It is obvious that making up class reading groups has been developed in the campus. But we also encounter some difficulties and limitations. Therefore, the text tries to share our past experiences with the public

Reading Practices of Secondary Schools Teenagers : An Approach to their Understanding

    No full text
A dispassionate approach concerning the reading practices of secondary school teenagers is the main goal of this study, regarding a particular school library. It’s based on three methodologies of observation: by collecting evidence of pupils’ presence in a school library; by holding an inquiry about their reading and leisure practices and by questioning some young people’s personal statements which escape a sociological and group approach. Through these supports of investigation, we can delineate a new scenery of teenager’s reading practices: they read but in a different way, different from the adults’ habits. The understanding of these ways of reading establishes the role of the school library in the promotion of reading styles and allows a more realistic approach to its real effects
