Get PDFIm Jahr 2010 wurde bei Bauarbeiten im Areal des Basler Waisenhauses eine kleinere Gruppe von Gräbern entdeckt, die anhand von wenigen Beigaben mit einiger Wahrscheinlichkeit in das zweite Viertel des 5. Jahrhunderts datiert. Mit dem Fund dieser Gräber liegt für die Epoche der Spätantike in Basel erstmals eine Gruppe von Bestattungen vor, die eine zivile rechtsrheinische Siedlungstätigkeit ausserhalb der bekannten Befestigungsanlagen in der ersten Hälfte des 5. Jahrhunderts anzeigt

No full textAnti-corruption Collective Action Initiatives (CAIs) are structured efforts that bring together private sector actors with other stakeholders with the aim of preventing corruption and improving the business environment in a particular context.
The landscape of CAIs is extremely diverse. Differences cut across the type and number of stakeholders involved. Initiatives can be sector-specific or cross-sectoral. They can be applied at the community, country, regional or global level.
This paper is based on two recent workshops in which a wide variety of international Collective Action practitioners shared their experiences, success factors and strategies for overcoming common challenges.

No full textThis report discusses the different contexts and processes through which a High Level Reporting Mechanism (HLRM) has been designed and implemented in Colombia, Ukraine, Panama and Argentina, as well as initial interest in the HLRM model in Peru.
Its aim is to understand the specificities of each case and draw lessons applicable to future projects in other countries, whilst respecting the commitment to develop an HLRM that takes account of the specific country’s context. 
Care-takers and place-makers: Old-Age and urban regeneration in Patan, Nepal
Get PDFThis article considers ageing in cities of the Global South, with a particular focus on urban transformation and place-making in the old city center of Patan, Kathmandu Valley. Building upon discussions evolving around concepts such as ‘active ageing’, ‘environmental gerontology’ and ‘age-friendly cities’, terms largely coined in northern America and western Europe, the article addresses their productivity – and challenges – when applied in the case of Nepal. It considers a larger field of ageing in the realm of transcultural place-making, since the contextualization includes global circulations of ideas and practices related to cultural heritage, transnational migration and urban transformation through economic liberalization. The ethnographic material collected between 2014–17 among Newar senior residents is discussed with respect to questions of ownership, participation and responsibility. It highlights the entangled relationship of socio-religious relations and built environment, as well as intangible heritage, seeking to stress the importance of ephemeral and interstitial spaces that do not necessarily resonate with ‘global’ concepts of public and private, wellbeing and development
Working Paper 26: The ambivalence of social networks and their role in spurring and potential for curbing petty corruption: comparative insights from East Africa
No full textThis paper compares social network dynamics and related petty corrupt practices in East Africa. It highlights how the properties of structural and functional networks could serve as entry points for anti-corruption interventions.
With a focus on the health sector in Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda, the empirical findings from this research corroborate the role of social networks in perpetuating collective practices of petty corruption, including bribery, favouritism and gift-giving.
The paper makes a case for designing a novel type of behavioural anti-corruption intervention, whereby the power of social networks is harnessed to elicit behavioural and attitudinal change for anti-corruption outcomes

This paper addresses these and additional questions about the dynamic between governments and the private sector with respect to harnessing e-governance tools for corruption prevention. It is written primarily from a private sector perspective and for private sector actors who are interested in a more comprehensive understanding of the scope and examples of e-government solutions to improve their anti-corruption policies, but concludes with numerous recommendations for the private sector and governments alike
Longevity, Labor, and Care between Kin and State in China
Get PDFGlobal aging poses important questions about intergenerational care, frequently framed around the rising burden of the elderly as care dependents. By contrast, in rural China senior kin often perform essential work in families as care providers who tend to partners, support children, and nurture grandchildren. Between state welfare regimes and kinship obligations, senior citizens in rural China contribute work in fields, courtyards and homes into their old age. This article asks why this is the case and examines the effects this care has on the value of labor, kinship, and personhood. In doing so, it takes up issues of the invisibility of elderly rather than feminized care work. Local idioms of labor threaten to hide care ‘inside’ the village, overshadowed by remunerated, formal work performed ‘outside’ in the urbanizing economy by younger generations. By turning towards senior citizens performing everyday acts and hosting festive celebrations, aging villagers stake recognition for their caring labor to their kin, neighbors, and community. Senior citizens thus claim recognition for the care work they perform in the Chinese countryside

Get PDFIm Oktober 2016 begannen im Musiksaal des Basler Stadtcasinos umfangreiche Rettungsgrabungen. Unter dem Boden des Musiksaals eröffneten sich einmalige Einblicke in die wechselvolle Stadtgeschichte: Die kontinuierliche Entwicklung dieses Ortes beginnt vor knapp 1000 Jahren mit dem Bau der ersten Stadtmauer und dem Bau der zweiten Stadtmauer um 1250 und erstreckt sich über die Klosterbauten der Barfüssermönche, den nachreformatorischen Friedhof und das «Irrenhaus» bis zum Kaufhaus aus dem 19. Jahrhundert und schliesslich dem Musiksaal von 1876. Der Musiksaal steht damit an einem für die Stadtentwicklung von Basel exemplarischen Ort, der eindrücklich von der Entwicklung eines peripheren Areals ausserhalb der mittelalterlichen Stadt zu einer Kulturmeile im heutigen Stadtzentrum erzählt
