Policy Brief 5: Curbing wildlife trafficking in Uganda: Lessons for practitioners
No full textThis policy brief summarises the main findings from extensive field research on the drivers, facilitators and strategies of wildlife trafficking in Uganda. It translates the insights described in Working Paper 33: A worm’s-eye view of wildlife trafficking in Uganda into recommendations for practitioners and policymakers.
The research shows that individuals engaging in the first stages of the trading route are driven predominantly by aspirations of wealth to overcome socio-economic hardships. This is reinforced by stereotypes that depict wildlife trade as benign and legitimate.
The trafficking is also facilitated by weak governance systems that generate high levels of corruption and impunity. In such a context, opportunistic strategies sustain the operations of organised transnational wildlife trafficking networks, not least because of the availability of a ready pool of accomplices who can be co-opted to facilitate the effective consolidation, concealment and corrupt cover of high volumes of wildlife products.
Policymakers who wish to reduce the attractiveness of Uganda for organised wildlife trafficking networks are advised to consider these factors when designing their interventions.

Get PDFNach einem Überblick über die Geschichte des Tabaks in Basel wird der Fokus auf eine Auswahl von Pfeifenfragmente aus den Grabungen auf dem Areal Basel- Gasfabrik gelegt. Dieses Gebiet war vor dem 19. Jahrhundert noch landwirtschaftliche Nutzfläche, weshalb der Fund von über 1000 Pfeifenfragmenten hier etwas Besonderes darstellt. Die Auswertung der Fundstücke von Basel-Gasfabrik sowie einiger zusätzlicher Exemplare aus Stadtgrabungen, ergänzt durch einen Fundkatalog und Fundtafeln, ermöglicht eine Übersicht über die Herkunft der Tabakpfeifen
A Discussion on “European Global Studies”
Get PDFResponding to transformations often described by the shorthand expression “globalization,” the Europainstitut changed its English name in 2013 to Institute for European Global Studies. Five years later, members of the Institute came together to discuss their different views and assess the aims of European Global Studies. Among the points touched upon are the importance of different disciplinary backgrounds in this endeavor, the question of interdisciplinarity and/or transdisciplinarity, as well as the perceived challenges and promises with regard to the future of European Global Studies.The latest issue of the E-Journal «Global Europe» contains a transcript of parts of this discussion, edited and framed with introductory paragraphs in order to increase readability and facilitate comprehension. The purpose of publishing this discussion on European Global Studies is to clarify the current agenda of the Institute, to showcase the plurality of approaches pursued under its roof, and also to outline its innovative potential for the Social Sciences and the Humanities in the 21st century

Get PDFDemokratie spielt im schweizerischen Selbstverständnis eine zentrale Rolle. In einem scharfen Kontrast zu den weitreichenden politischen Mitbestimmungsrechten stehen in der Schweiz die rechtlichen Möglichkeiten der Mitbestimmung am Arbeitsplatz und im Unternehmen. Vorschläge für eine stärkere Verankerung der Partizipationsrechte der Arbeitnehmenden hatten politisch keine Chance. Es bedurfte vielmehr einen Anstoss von Aussen – der geplante EWR-Beitritt –, damit die heute geltende minimale Mitwirkungsregelung Eingang in schweizerisches Recht fanden.So deckt sich heute das schweizerische Recht der Mitwirkung der Arbeitnehmenden mit den Anforderungen, die sich aus dem Arbeitsvölkerrecht und aus dem EU-Recht ergeben. Die geltenden Mitwirkungsregelungen werden durch die Veränderungen der Arbeitswelt im Zuge der Digitalisierung herausgefordert. Gefordert sind von den Sozialpartnern, aber auch dem Gesetzgeber, den Gerichten und der Arbeitsrechtswissenschaft, Ideen und Konzepte, wie Mitsprache und Mitbestimmung der Beschäftigten in neuen hybriden Arbeitsformen möglich ist
Krypta unter der Vierung des Basler Münsters: Eine neue Informationsstelle
Get PDFZum 1000-jährigen Jubiläum des Heinrichsmünsters hat die Archäologische Bodenforschung im Mai 2019 in der bisher unzugänglichen Krypta unter der Vierung die Archäologische Informationsstelle «Basel, 820–1500 n. Chr. – Krypta unter der Vierung des Münsters» eröffnet. Sie ist seither die Hauptattraktion des Rundgangs zu Originalfundplätzen der keltischen, römischen und mittelalterlichen Stadtgeschichte, zu denen u. a. auch mittels GPS eine dreisprachige App führt.
Die Krypta unter der Vierung war im 19. Jahrhundert während Umbaumassnahmen zugunsten einer grosszügigeren Nutzung des Mittelschiffs für Gottesdienste und Konzerte abgebrochen und zugeschüttet worden. Erst 1966 wurde sie bei archäologischen Ausgrabungen wieder freigelegt und mit einer Betondecke versehen. Der Raum blieb danach über 50 Jahre lang unberührt. Er ist der einzige Ort im Münster, an dem Baureste aller Vorgängerbauten zu sehen sind

Working Paper 29: Recovering assets in support of the SDGs: From soft to hard assets for development
Get PDFThis Working Paper aims to contribute to the international policy dialogue on the link between asset recovery and countries’ pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals.
It contends that supporting countries in recovering stolen assets and promoting sustainable development are mutually reinforcing. It also aims to correct the false reputation of asset recovery as a very technical legalistic field of development cooperation, and to generate broader understanding of the far-reaching role that asset recovery can play to foster development.
The paper argues that helping countries recover stolen assets, anchored in target 16.4 of the SDGs, can mobilise important resources to finance development or poverty reduction efforts.
In addition, it explores how asset recovery plays a critical role in strengthening some of the key foundations of sustainable development, such as the rule of law and strong, transparent and accountable institutions.
Combining “hard assets” in terms of actual assets recovered and the “soft assets” that are needed to do so effectively, ranging from the capacity of law enforcement institutions to the political will to fight criminal networks, provides a powerful foundation for sustainable development
