Get PDFL’articolo analizza l’episodio relativo al duello svoltosi nel 212 a. C., prima della riconquista romana di Capua, fra i due cavalieri Badio e Crispino, Campano l’uno e Romano l’altro (Liv. 25.18.4–13). La vicenda è incentrata sul legame di hospitium esistente tra i contendenti e rifiutato pubblicamente dallo sfidante Badio prima del combattimento. Il motivo letterario della monomachia, per di più declinata secondo lo schema dell’arcaico duello fratricida, all’interno della terza decade sembra soprattutto veicolare un messaggio ideologico e politico. La doppia corrispondenza fra microconflitto e macroconflitto, fra legame personale ricusato e alleanza fra Stati infranta, contiene un messaggio identitario e nazionalistico conforme alla linea politica instaurata dal principato dopo le guerre civili
