Canadians’ Understanding of Issues Related to the Aging Population

    No full text
In order to better understand the public’s understanding and expectations of the retirement income system, the department of Human Resources and Skills Development commissioned Ipsos Reid to conduct quantitative opinion research among Canadians. This research was designed to provide a snapshot of current understanding of retirement-income related issues. Ipsos Reid fielded a questionnaire written by HRSDC and performed data analysis to provide a weighted representation of the general public. The methodology for this quantitative portion of this study involved a large-scale national telephone survey with a sample of 2,500 Canadians to allow for significant regional, demographic and attitudinal breakouts. A custom CATI telephone survey was conducted among Canadians aged 18 and older, sampled using random digit dialing. The average survey length was 10 minutes

Transitioning dairy cows to automatic milking: predictive effects of training on post transition AMS use

    No full text
The transition to automatic milking systems (AMS) can be difficult for dairy cows, often requiring staff to fetch reluctant individuals. This study tested whether positive reinforcement training (PRT) could ease a herd-wide transition to AMS and whether individual training responses predicted later behavior in the AMS. A total of 181 lactating Holstein cows received either baseline training alone or baseline training preceded by PRT (n = 71 and n = 110, respectively). During PRT, cows were offered repeated opportunities to approach and enter the AMS, with grain used as an incentive. Progression during PRT was not mandatory; cows engaged at their own pace and at the end of each PRT session engagement was scored 1 (no interaction), 2 (partial investigation), or 3 (entry or walk-through). AMS visit behavior was monitored for 4 wk after AMS activation, with daily maximum interval between AMS visits serving as the primary outcome (as shorter intervals indicate a lower risk of fetching). We found no overall effect of treatment, but individual responses during PRT were predictive. Specifically, cows that achieved Step 2 (n = 50) and Step 3 (n = 54) during PRT later showed shorter maximum visit intervals (736.7 ± 21.0 min and 612.5 ± 20.8 min, respectively) compared to the 6 cows that remained at Step 1 (892.7 ± 63.8 min). Multiparous cows also had longer visit intervals than primiparous cows; however, regardless of parity, maximum visit intervals decreased over the 28 days we followed their behavior. These findings indicate that some cows struggle to learn to enter the AMS and suggest that these animals may benefit from targeted interventions during the transition

Empowering Black Entrepreneurship | Autonomisation de l’entrepreneuriat noir

    No full text
Summary This study presents a deep dive into the ecosystem of Black entrepreneurship and business in Canada, specifically in Western Canada, to provide a clearer picture of its breadth and scope across the Canadian economy. By combining secondary data with extensive primary research, the study provides a quantitative and qualitative assessment of the size, scope, and economic impact of the Black entrepreneur and business ecosystem in Canada, the major challenges and barriers faced by its members, and opportunities to empower them and support their development. This report is intended to inform policy proposals that effectively target key obstacles faced by Black entrepreneurs and businesses and is a starting point for further detailed impact assessment of such policies.

Postal Code Conversion File [Canada], September 2025, Census of Canada 2021

    No full text
The Postal Code Conversion File (PCCF) is a digital file which provides a correspondence between the Canada Post Corporation (CPC) six-character postal code and Statistics Canada's standard geographic areas for which census data and other statistics are produced. Through the link between postal codes and standard geographic areas, the PCCF permits the integration of data from various sources. The Single Link Indicator provides one best link for every postal code, as there are multiple records for many postal codes. New to the June 2022 version, a separate data file is available for retired postal codes. The retired file uses the same record layout as the PCCF file. The same syntax file can be used for both the PCCF data file and the retired data file. The geographic coordinates attached to each postal code on the PCCF are commonly used to map the distribution of data for spatial analysis (e.g., clients, activities). The location information is a powerful tool for planning, or research purposes. The geographic coordinates, which represent the standard geostatistical areas linked to each postal codeOM on the PCCF, are commonly used to map the distribution of data for spatial analysis (e.g., clients, activities). The location information is a powerful tool for marketing, planning, or research purposes. In April 1983, the Statistical Registers and Geography Division released the first version of the PCCF, which linked postal codesOM to 1981 Census geographic areas and included geographic coordinates. Since then, the file has been updated on a regular basis to reflect changes. For this release of the PCCF, the vast majority of the postal codesOM are directly geocoded to 2016 Census geography while others are linked via various conversion processes. A quality indicator for the confidence of this linkage is available in the PCCF. </p

Humpback whale genomes reflect the increased efficiency of commercial whaling

    No full text
AbstractGenetic diversity is declining globally, a trend that may particularly impact exploited populations that must adapt to rapid environmental change and other threats. Estimated genomic changes in effective population size mirrored known whaling history and shifts in technology. In the Southern Ocean, a comparison of genomes from historical and contemporary populations indicated that the contemporary genomes have less diversity and an elevated realised mutation load for moderately deleterious mutations, likely due to the effects of whaling. Our results demonstrate that the relatively recent, brief, and drastic depletion of humpback whale populations by whaling likely had subtle but discernible, negative, and lasting effects on the whales’ genomes. Thus, even as some humpback whale populations are now recovering to pre-exploitation numbers, they likely do so with a diminished adaptive capacity in the face of future conditions and threats.</p

Postal Code Federal Riding File [Canada], June 2001, Census of Canada 1996

    No full text
The Postal Codes by Federal Ridings File (PCFRF) is a digital file which provides a link between the six- character postal code and Canada’s federal electoral districts (which are also known as federal ridings). Elections Canada defines a federal electoral district (FED) as any place or territorial area entitled to return a Member of Parliament (MP) to serve in the House of Commons. Federal electoral district legal limits and descriptions are the responsibility of the Chief Electoral Officer, and are usually revised every ten years after the results of the decennial census. There are 301 FEDs in the 1996 Representation Order, the most recent revision of the federal electoral districts limits. Some postal codes straddle one or more FED boundaries. Users often link the postal code in their data set to the FED in the PCFRF. When performing this link, users should be aware that the postal code in their data set may represent a mailing address used by a person, not necessarily where the person actually resides. Similarly, a postal code in a business-based mailing address may not necessarily indicate where the business activity took place. The reference date for postal codes contained in the PCFRF is the same date as the postal codes contained in the Postal Code Conversion File (PCCF) product released concurrently with this version of the PCFRF</p
