Exposure to Violence among Adolescents in Families with Domestic Violence
Get PDFStudies of domestic violence in India have largely taken into account the experiences ofwomen. In contrast, studies which focus on children’s exposure to domestic violence are rare.This study assesses the levels of domestic violence in families and the frequency ofadolescents’ exposure to it by analysing the accounts of discourses of adolescents themselves.A quantitative approach was adopted to explore the experiences of adolescents. Therespondents were school-going adolescents from Kasaragod district of Kerala, India. Onlythose students who admitted to the occurrence of domestic violence in their homes and werewilling to be part of the study were considered. The data was collected through interviewswith adolescents growing up in families in which they experienced their fathers’ violenceagainst their mothers. This research is relevant and useful to understand how much violenceoccurs in the adolescents’ homes and the levels of this to which they are exposed
DACUM Process for Indian Community Colleges: The NSDC and Global Standards
Get PDFThis article is based on the community college experiences emerging from India which hasthe largest number of a non-literate population in the world, and possibly the largest numberof out-of-school children. India is undergoing rapid changes due to globalisation,competitiveness and a knowledge-based economy. Linkages with the local community andindustry are an essential prerequisite for the community college movement in India. Thesocial work processes are associated with poverty, unemployment, poor health, disablementand other sources of disadvantage. The community college movement in India is one solutionto India’s persistent problems of under employment, unemployment, illiteracy andunemployability and a powerful means for social workers to utilise to empower peoplethrough community involvement. The objective of this article is to trace the communitycollege movement as an empowering process, to fine-tune the linkages between themovement and the social work profession, and provide guidelines to social workprofessionals to develop and implement the system far and wide as an educational alternativeand empowerment of the poor, through developing suitable and relevant curriculum for thedropouts and slow learners coming out from the economically and educationally undevelopedcommunities in India
How Is Kerala Doing in Higher Education
Get PDFOn the basis of many of the overall quantitative indicators, the highereducation scene in Kerala is found to be favourably comparable with theall-India scene, and in some respects, the situation in Kerala is better thansome of the rapidly expanding higher education systems in southern states.However, some serious threats do persist, the most important of whichbeing rapid growth of non-philanthropic private sector in higher education,which, if unchecked, may rattle the very foundations of a just and equitablehigher education system, which in turn is the foundation of a humanesociety. With the help of some most recent data, this short note analyses afew selective important dimensions of higher education in Kerala aroundthis broad theme. The attempt is to offer a critical comment on policiesand approaches being adopted by Kerala for the development ofhigher education and to outline what lessons can be drawn fromKerala’s own experience and the experience of other states andcountries

Social Engagement and Meaningful Activities of Persons with Dementia: Some Best Practices in Kerala
Get PDFThis study was conducted to explore the practical techniques and strategies identified anddeveloped by families for caring persons with dementia which will have a wider implications infamilies, institutional settings, developing training modules and practice guidelines in the field ofquality dementia care. It is a qualitative study using the case study pattern / design. The ambit /sphere of this study are the families of the Kottayam district of Kerala having persons withdementia, who are taken care of within the families. Purposive sampling was employedselecting six families with good care practices as samples for the case study. These familieswere selected by consulting doctors and social workers working in association with ARDSI(Alzheimer‘s Related Disorders Society of India), of the Kottayam Chapter. Primary data for thestudy was collected from the family members (primary caregivers) of the persons with dementiaand interview schedule was used for data collection. Even though the family caregivers inKerala are not trained for providing care they have developed their own strategies and techniquesto engage persons with dementia in activities that have some personal meaning and importance.All the good practices identified have already been proved effective by the families throughyears of practice, so these practices can be used in various different settings of dementia care forquality results
Social Mobilization for Ecological Literacy
Get PDFThe global environmental crisis is now widely recognized as one of themost pressing issues of our times. It can be argued that this crisis is primarilya crisis of values, with serious implications for future generations and forthe sustainable development of society. The nature and extent of theenvironmental crisis represents a context in which urgent responses frommany sections of society are required. This paper focuses on one particularresponse, the development of environmental education and activismamongst school students. In particular, the paper presents a case study ofschool students involved in the Mathrubhumi SEED project in Alappuzhaand how these students responded to a specific environmental issue. Theobjective of the case presentation is to highlight the importance of ecologicalliteracy and the ways in which school-based environmental programmesmay facilitate environmental education and subsequent activism. Thisarticle describes a situation which arose in Alappuzha where the districtauthorities moved to cut down trees along the canal-side as part of abeautification project. The trees were an important habitat for a range ofwetland birds and were ecologically connected to the broader canal andwetland systems of the district, an internationally recognized Ramsar site.Students involved in the SEED project engaged in protest actions inresponse to this situation, mobilizing both media and wider communitysupport, resulting in an effective change. This paper argues that suchenvironmental education, focused on developing ecological literacy, is animportant step in securing an ecologically sustainable futur

This problem has received someattention in the recent years among the general public and mental healthprofessionals.
