Teacher Perspectives on Managing Manifest Sexual Behaviour among Individuals with Intellectual Disability
Get PDFMaladaptive sexual behaviours amongst individuals with intellectualdisability (ID) cause much embarrassment to their caregivers. The caregiver’slack of skill and knowledge in managing those behaviours end up reinforcingthe same. The present study explored the sexual behaviours manifestedby individuals with ID and the strategies adopted by special educators tomanage those behaviours. The data generated from in-depth interviews ofspecial educators with relevant experience was thematically analysed. Thestudy concluded that the various strategies adopted by the special educatorsdepended on i) their general attitude towards the expression of sexualityby the intellectually challenged and, ii) their perspectives on the reasonsbehind the inappropriate sexual behaviour. The teachers resorted tobehaviour and environment modification techniques to manageinappropriate sexual behaviours. Implications for practice are alsodiscussed
Adoption as an Alternative Family System for Childless Couples in Kerala
Get PDFAdoption is a process in which the adopted child is separated from his/herown family and parents, and is placed in a new family of the adoptiveparents. It involves a major shift in the life of all those who are involved init. Both the parents and the adopted child need to do a great deal ofadjustments throughout their life. For parents, adjustment to adoptionbegins with infertility and the consideration of adoption as a means ofachieving parenthood. It continues throughout the early family life cycleas they integrate their child fully into the family and begin a process ofsharing adoption information with him/her. The adoptive parents need tomake the child their own, accepting him/her entirely both in the presentand in the past and finally integrating him/her into the new family. Oncechildren know that they are adopted, they begin the process of adjustmentthat involves the integration of the meaning of their unique family statusand their dual connection to the two families into an emerging sense ofself. There are many factors that contribute to the successful creation of anew family through adoption. This article is intended to reflect on thepractice of adoption and the intentions/motivations/reasons for adoptionamong a sample of couples. The paper presents a study conducted amongthe adoptive parents in Kerala. A total of 356 adoptive parents from sixdistricts of the state were interviewed for the study. One of the major findingsof the study is that among the majority of the parents, the primary motivefor adoption was to have a child and thus completing their family, as theydo not have a child of their own. It is hoped that the findings anddescriptions will be helpful and that practitioners will find it useful fortheir professional interventions with those adoptive families who are in need of support
Indian Teenagers and their Family Relations in the Social Networking Era
Get PDFThis study is an attempt to find out the difference in the social networking media usage patterns ofteenagers and their time spent on family communication. A secondary objective is to determine thestructure of attachment of teenagers to their parents. A structured questionnaire was administered to556 students (using social networking media) from high schools and higher secondary schools inIndia. Results show that there is a significant difference between the teenagers with internet at homeand those without internet at home in their time spent for family communication. The factor analysisof the structure of teenagers‘ attachment to their parents yielded a three factored solution. Subsequentfactor analyses of the structure of attachment of boys and girls to their parents also yielded threefactors. However, some changes were observed in the factor structures of these different groups
Depression Among Working Andnon-Workingmiddle Aged Women
Get PDFThe primary purpose of this descriptive study was to examinedpression in the groups of working and non-working middle-aged womenin Pala Municipality and different Panchayats in the Kottayam districtof Kerala. Using convenience sampling of 200 (100 middle aged workingwomen from small scale factories and 100 middle aged non-workingwomen from Kudumbashree units). The study sample has used a validand reliable instrument scale i.e. Beck’s Depression Inventory Scale.Results indicated highly significant relationship between maritalrelationship, depression and family support involved with working andnon-working middle-aged women. Also this study assesses the depressionexperienced by these working and non-working middle-aged women andexamines the coping strategies used by them. The working middle aged.women had better mental health and reported less depression than thenon-working middle aged women. The most frequently reported sourceof stress for working mothers was not having enough time to do all thehouse chores. Whereas for non-working mothers’ it was lack of propersocial life and this was a major stressor for them. The findings of theseresults also show that non –working married women have to face moreproblems in their married life as compared to working married women.The results further show that highly educated working women can performwell in their married life and they are comparatively free from depressionas compared to non-working married women
