Non-Governmental Organisations(NGOs): Issues of Terminology and Definitions
Get PDFThere is a phenomenal growth over the last two decades in the numbers and scope of Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) across the world. Although there is great recognition on therole of NGOs in society, there is no agreement on what the term NGO entails and how NGOs canbe defined and understood. A number of issues are associated with this disagreement such asterminological issues and different approaches to definitions. The terminological issues refer to thewide range of terms used to identify this set of organisations such as an non-profit, not for profit,civil society, third sector organisations and so on. The various definitional approaches include legal,functional, economical and structural definitions. This conceptual paper argues that an analysis ofthe debates on sectoral differences, terminological issues and definitional aspects surrounding theconcept of NGO can provide an understanding of the concept. This paper concludes that NGOs areinstitutional entities, different from government and commercial organisations, based on sixessential attributes: formal nature, non-governmental, non-profit, self-governing, voluntarism andaccountability
Indian Social Work Education: A Generalist Core Competence Approach

The paper draws attention to the growth of SocialWork in the country in terms of the increasing numbers of schools ofsocial work and Non-Governmental Organisations. These numbers haveled to the demand for superior performance and accountability from socialworkers, which in turn is dependent on the quality of training offered tothem. The paper employs an elaborate literature review, adopting ahistorical and international perspective, to expose the grey areas of thepresent system of social work education and training in India and bringout the relevance of the Generalist Core Competence approach in thecountry. It is argued that the Generalist Core Competence approach iscapable of augmenting practice and assisting the social work profession toovercome its challenges

Fieldwork in Social Work Education: Challenges, Issues and Best Practices

Fieldwork is based on the philosophy of ‗learning by doing‘ and its purpose isfundamental to a sound education in social work. Fieldwork opportunities take the students to avast variety of ground realities around the world. It is critically important for social work studentsto acquire, in a classroom environment, practice principles, values and ethics and the scientificbasis for practice. Equally important is the need to apply the theoretical content covered in theclassroom, to real life situations as part of a student‘s preparation to become a professional socialworker. In this perspective began the evolution of field action projects (presently referred to associal labs or live labs) by the leading social work institutions in the country. These initiativesprovide both meeting the needs of the target population and a platform for the students topractice. This paper looks into the major challenges faced by the students, teachers and theagencies/live labs in providing the training for the students. It also draws light on the differentissues in the entire process of fieldwork in Kerala. Women Executives in IT/ ITES Sectors: Job Satisfaction and Quality of Work Life
Get PDFThis paper is an exploration on the dimensions of job satisfaction andquality of work life as perceived by women executives in the field ofinformation technology and enabled services like (IT/ITES) sector inChennai, India. The ITES Policy of Tamil Nadu (2005) has envisioned inmaking Tamil Nadu, the global ITES capital based on its infrastructuralfacilities as well as its talent pool of English speaking population. The cityhas a large number of multinational corporations (MNCs) with a significantproportion of its population working in these sectors. The present study isa descriptive and diagnostic study based on both primary and secondarydata. The demographic profile of the women executives working in IT/ITES in Chennai were analysed and the data was statistically tested to knowwhether job satisfaction of the employees has any relation to their qualityof work life. The major dimensions on quality of work life like adequateand fair compensation, safe and healthy working conditions, opportunityto use and develop human capacities, opportunity for continued growthand security, social integration in the work organisation, constitutionalismin the work organisation, work and total life space, and social relevance ofwork life were also examined for the current study. The study was guidedby two research questions. 1. What are the dimensions of quality of worklife as perceived by the respondents? 2. If there is any relationship betweenquality of work life and job satisfaction? The study affirms that there was asignificant correlation between job satisfaction and quality of work life ofthe women executives in the above mentioned sectors. These findings areof immense organisational significance as it enables the Human Resourcedepartment to design programmes to improve the quality of work life ofthe employees with a focus on enhancing their job satisfaction. It is intendedto assist policy makers in identifying the key work place issues to devisestrategies to tackle the issue
