A Causality Analysis on the Empirical Nexus between Capital Formation and Economic Growth: Evidence from India
Get PDFThe study investigates the causal relationship between grosscapital formation (GCF) and gross domestic product (GDP) overthe period 1970-2013 using annual data. The study has employedeconometric tools to analyse the behaviour of both the series.Johansen’s co-integration test has been applied to explore thelong-run equilibrium relationship between GCF and GDP. Theanalysis reveals that GCF and GDP are cointegrated and, hence,a long-run equilibrium relationship exists between them. Thevector error correction model (VECM) has shown that the laggedterms of gross capital formation influence the gross domesticproduct of India. The Granger causality test exhibits the presenceof short-run relationship between GCF and GDP and therelationship appears to be bidirectional. It is therefore concludedthat high capital formation drives economic growth and, in turn,high economic growth contributes to the accumulation of morecapital assets in India

The Elected Women Representatives of the Kerala Grama Panchayat Elections
Get PDFThe 73rd Constitution Amendment Act, 1992 was a landmark one ininstitutionalising the Panchayati Raj System in India, constitutionally creatinga space for women to become active in the public domain.The presentstudy looks at the Elected Women Representatives (EWR) of the 2010Panchayat elections of Kerala wherein the reservations of seats and positionsof women became 50 per cent.The paper examines the motivating factorof the EWRs to contest the election, the encouragement anddiscouragement they received, and their political and organisationalexposure before becoming EWRs. It was found that the majority of thepersons who became elected women representatives did so because of theprovision they got due to the reservation of seats and they became so dueto the encouragement and motivation of others, especially political activistsThe support of their family members was a crucial factor for them to becomeEWRs. For the self-motivated ones, it was their desire to do something forothers, especially for women, that was the motivating factor to contest inelections. The previous organisational involvement of the EWRs was apositive factor which helped them to perform better in their currentresponsibility as people’s representatives
Children Affected by Domestic Violence: A Multidisciplinary Approach
Get PDFThis study uses a multidisciplinary approach to assist children affected by domestic violenceand to assesses the first-line agents’, (service providers) in the community’s, awareness of theimpact of domestic violence on children, as well as to assess the methods they use to identifyand treat problems associated with domestic violence. The integrated efforts of these serviceproviders contribute to the treatment of domestic violence on children. The data was collectedthrough a qualitative method, specifically, focus group discussions. The results confirmed theprevalence of domestic violence and its impact on children. It also found that the serviceproviders were undertrained in their ability to intervene in this area. Therefore, the researchtrained and coordinated the efforts of the service providers through a multidisciplinary modelof intervention. The model identified and then treated the abused children and their families.This intervention resulted in the restoration of children into safe families
Paid Domestic Workers in Ernakulam District, Kerala, India
Get PDFDomestic workers constitute one of the largest segments of unorganised workers in India andit is one job where men are outnumbered by women. Domestic workers lack respect andrecognition from their employers and are mostly underpaid, prevailing in a state of dependency.This paper, based on a qualitative study, aims to find out the nature of work and work related.problems of women domestic workers, and to uncover the factors which contribute to theirentry into paid domestic work. Samples are purposively selected from the domestic workers’groups promoted by Ernakulam Social Service Society, a non-governmental organisation.(NGO) based in the Ernakulam District. The data was collected through in-depth interviewsand focus group discussions and analysed using interpretive methods. Eight major themes,namely, working hours, place of employment, type of work performed by the domestic workersin employer’s home, the employee and employer relationship, problems experienced at workplace, income, occupational health, and family support, emerged in this study to explain thenature of work, and work related problems of paid women domestic workers. The domesticworkers’ perceptions about factors that contribute to their entry into paid domestic work is.discussed under socio-economic backwardness and educational status. The findings of thestudy will help to identify vulnerability in paid domestic work and frame a strategy fororganising and globalising domestic workers in the context of the International LabourOrganisation’s latest efforts in promoting decent work for domestic workers
