Internal Migration in India: Issues, Policies, and the Road Ahead
Get PDFLarge scale migration has increased in the modern era due to betterconnectivity and interdependence of various parts of the world. Internalmigration is one of the unexplored categories in India. Despite the factsand evidence of large rural to rural and rural to urban migration, Indiadoes not have the proper mechanisms to control, execute, and managethese internal migrants. This paper aims to study the patterns, causes, andconsequences of internal migration in India. It also discusses the differentpolicies related to India’s internal migrant workers and proposes strategyframeworks on migration. The paper suggests that migrant workers’ problemsare enormous and calls for the government and other social stakeholders,including trade unions, to collaborate and communicate to strengthen thepolicies for social security and sustainable growth of migrant worker

Professional Volunteerism among Social Work Students as a Response to the Pandemic Crisis
Get PDFThe COVID-19 crisis halted traditional field training in social work education. However,as educators of a profession with roots in philanthropy and volunteerism, the social workschools in Kerala encouraged students to take up professional volunteerism (PV) inresponse to the crisis as an alternative to the pre-structured field practicum activities.This study explored the various voluntary activities the social work students are involvedin as budding professionals. They voluntarily dedicated their professional skills, ethicsand competencies through a continuum of five domains of services such as concreteand practical services, psycho-education and psychological support, restoration andrehabilitation services, welfare administration and self-reliance and sustainabilityprogrammes. This study’s results highlight the significance of PV in social work educationto socialise students with diverse needs in society and capacitate them to ethically helpthe individuals and community achieve well-being
