    Ungendered Social Support for Cancer Patients in the Patriarchal Hegemony in Kerala

    Although the hallmark set for the Kerala development model is anegalitarian ideology, the increasing incidence of dowry deaths and genderdiscrimination calls for comprehensive and intensive investigations intothe prevailing social reality on gender equality in Kerala. This study exploredone of the worst scenarios in life to find out whether people discriminateagainst women there. The study’s objective was to compare the perceivedsocial support and hope among women and men who have cancer in theErnakulam district of Kerala. This study adopted a quantitative surveymethod and collected data from 240 cancer patients in 15 randomly selectedpanchayats in the Ernakulam district.     Domestic violence, that has been taking place in human societyfrom time immemorial, has been recognised as an issue of social concern.Specifically it refers to violence within the family against woman perpetratedby her immediate relatives, especially husband and in-laws. This paperdiscusses the various aspects of domestic violence and in doing so theauthor uses the empirical data from her study of domestic violence in thestate of Kerala, India. Physical violence perpetrated on women is mainlyin the form of behaviours like hitting, kicking, beating, slapping, threateningto use weapon and forced sex. The common forms of psychological violenceagainst women are the behaviour patterns of demeaning, threatening,abandoning and marital infidelity on the part of husbands or their in-laws.The major reasons for the occurrence of domestic violence are alcoholism,extra-marital relations, dowry, suspicion of marital infidelity, financialconstraints, disparity in social status, sexual maladjustment, propertydispute, not attending to household chores, not looking after children andlack of property. Domestic violence has its consequences at three levels:personal (of the individual woman victim), family (especially children) andsocietal. As a social issue domestic violence needs professional interventionin the service of the victims.     Migration is a natural phenomenon. In view of the majorchanges in the availability of employment in the rural areas, peopleoften migrate from rural to urban areas in search of source of livelihood.This situation coupled with poverty has pushed people into miserableconditions. The migrant workers do not possess the skills or theeducation to enable them to find better paid, secure employment in theformal sector and they have to settle for work in the informal orunorganised sector. This paper discusses the condition of migrantlabourers engaged in brick kilns in Barak Valley of Assam. It examinesthe various factors for their migration and addresses the issues ofmigrant workers and their problems. It was found that under difficultconditions they migrated as a means for survival during lean seasonoften with their family members including children. They work undervery hazardous conditions. The facilities provided at the kiln sites arefar from satisfactory. Safety measurers are hardly met. Both thegovernment and non-government agencies should come forward witheffective programmes to improve the situation of the migrant labourers
