A survey of the interest in business topics and level of preparedness for economic life exhibited by English-speaking Quebec high school graduates
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the level of preparation for living a full economic life exhibited by English-speaking Quebec high school graduates upon their graduation. Although many secondary school teachers feel that such preparation is inadequate, there have been to date, no other investigations into this critical aspect of education.
This pioneering study has been conducted through: a) a distribution of questionnaires to first year C.E.G.E.P. students at the Ste. Foy, Lennoxville and St. Lambert campuses of Champlain College b) semi-structured in-depth interviews with thirty of the respondents to the questionnaire.
The study investigates the respondents' level of preparation in seven topic areas: housing, financing, budgeting, transportation, insurance, general contracts and marriage contracts. The respondents' degree of interest in each one of the topics is also investigated and evaluated.
The results of the study indicate that the students are not sufficiently prepared to make good decisions concerning their economic lives upon high school graduation. Furthermore, although the students consider their preparation important but inadequate, their own interest in the seven topics is not intense enough to lead these students to the necessary efforts to render their preparation sufficient.
Recommendations stemming from this study fall into two groups: a) corroboration of the findings of this study and better definition of the existing situation:
i) a similar province-wide survey to allow for more meaningful generalizations. ii) a similar survey in Quebec’s French-speaking secondary school system. iii) a follow-up survey of the respondents to determine if they ever do become sufficiently prepared iv) an evaluation of any extra-academic programs directed towards increasing society's preparation for economic life to determine if any similar academic program is necessary
v) discovery of the Quebec Department of Education's philosophy to determine if economic preparation of the students is a priority or even a concern.
b) Projects to improve current secondary school programs related to the preparation of the students for their economic lives. . i) a pilot program to increase the student's awareness that their preparation cannot wait until they encounter situations relevant to their economic lives ii) a pilot program designed to ensure that high school graduates are prepared to make good decisions concerning their economic lives iii) pressure should be brought to bear on the Department of Education to make it take interest and action in this neglected area of education.© Bruce Ballam, 197
