In Praise of Empathy: The Glue that holds Caring Communities Together in a Fractured World
No full textIn a tumultuous world where populism is on the rise as the result of an enraged, disenchanted, misguided and susceptible populace, empathy, one of the most vital of our moral virtues, is in serious jeopardy. Fear, prejudice and the rise of the extreme right has provoked a number of nay-sayers to draw our attention to what they believe to be the darker side of empathy, its biases and its vulnerability to subversion. This paper examines empathy, what it is, how it feels, the neural and environmental basis for its development, our moral obligation to nurture it in our children and how it may be induced in the case of empathy deficiencies. It considers the influences of gender and hormones on the expression of empathy and its relationship with sympathy and compassion. Also discussed are the properties of empathy as a motivational, socioemotional mechanism, that evokes kindness, caring, compassion and understanding in each of us, and its potential to neutralize the negativism, cruelty, violence and aggression, so prevalent in the world today.

No full textFamily planning is a larger concept involving preparation and knowledge around a “family future”. It allows people to attain their desired number of children and determine the spacing of pregnancies, reduces the need for abortion, especially unsafe abortion. On the other hand, contraceptives are the group of methods you use or steps you take to avoid pregnancy before you are ready. Contraceptives, one of the methods of family planning, helps prevent the transmission of other sexually transmitted infections. Moreover, it can help slow down population growth thereby contributing to economic benefits such as poverty reduction. It is also a very helpful way to improve the health of mothers and childrens through birth spacing and avoiding high risk pregnancies. In this study, significant factors in using contraceptives are determined. Based on the results from the conducted survey, three out of ten variables were considered as significant factors namely: desire of having more children, religion, and employment status (having p-values of 0.005, 0.008, and 0.000 respectively). These significant factors were used in formulating the model to predict the probability of using contraceptives among married women. Using Hosmer and Lemeshow Test of goodness-of-fit, the p-value of the model is 0.728. Thus, the model is a good fit. A re-survey was conducted to validate the model and 88% of the married women were correctly classified. Hence, the model will be very useful in predicting the probability of contraceptive use among married women.

As a child, unrequited feelings of paternalism made the world of non-domesticated animals a mystery. Only later in adult life did he interrogate these early memories of encounter with animals as part of a gendered society
"Authentically" Effeminate? Bialystok\u27s Theorization of Authenticity, Gay Male Femmephobia, and Personal Identity
No full textAuthenticity is a commonly heralded ideal in Western modernist discourses, with a large amount of literature describing individuals’ personal journeys towards self-fulfillment (Bialystok, 2009, 2013, 2015, 2017; Taylor, 1991; Varga, 2014). This paper examines Lauren Bialystok’s (2013) conception of authenticity in sex/gender identity and proposes that effeminate or ‘femme’ gay men make a strong case for fitting within such a conception of authenticity. Effeminate gay men experience significant in-group discrimination within gay men’s communities, with many gay men “defeminizing” (Taywaditep, 2002) themselves upon entering adulthood and mainstream gay communities. Through this exploration of Bialystok’s (2013) model for authenticity in sex/gender identity and the identity-based challenges effeminate or femme gay men experience, this paper describes why effeminate gay men fit Bialystok’s model, and the ethical dilemmas of theorizing authenticity in personal identity (Bialystok, 2009, 2011). Providing supportive and positive early environments in school while specifically addressing gender-based discrimination in childhood provides more opportunities for positive identity development and the potential of fulfilling self-authenticity within gender identity for femme gay men
A Silent Epidemic
No full textPost-secondary institutions are high-risk communities for sexual violence. While sexual violence has always been an issue within post-secondary, it is only recently that the topic of sexual violence has gained more attention from media. This media attention has resulted in a public outcry and has resulted in the creation and implementation of post-secondary sexual violence-specific policies as well as educational initiatives and programming. Furthermore, the public outcry has also led to an explosion of studies being performed within academia, such as the gendering of sexual violence. However, there are also gaps in the literature. For instance, the connections between how alcohol culture and gender ideologies contribute to post-secondary institutions being such high-risk communities for sexual violence is not as emphasized as it should be. This paper aims to demonstrate how alcohol culture and gender ideologies contribute to the phenomenon of sexual violence on post-secondary campuses
