    No full text
The act of infidelity is increasingly high among women and it is causing great concern for stakeholders. This study, therefore, investigated the causes of infidelity as expressed by literate working-class women in Lagos State. The study also examined whether moderating variables such as age and the educational qualification would affect the respondents’ views. A descriptive design was adopted for the study. A total of 300 respondents were drawn from the target population using purposive random sampling and simple random sampling techniques. A researcher-developed questionnaire tagged Causes of Infidelity (CIQ) was used to collect the data. The validity of the questionnaire was established by three experts in the Department of Counsellor Education, University of Ilorin. The reliability of the questionnaire was determined using a split-half method and a correlation coefficient of 0.74 was obtained. The data collected were analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) at 0.05 alpha level. Results showed that lack of care and attention, nonchalant attitude of the husband, lack of emotional support, etc. are the causes of infidelity among women. It also showed that there was a significant difference in the causes of infidelity as expressed by literate working-class women based on age but there was no difference based on educational qualification. No full text
This study has examined the subjective views of successful aging in intergenerational families (older adults, middle adults, adolescents). In this work, we have tried to explain the phenomenon of successful aging in a culturally specific way. This research draws on qualitative data collected through twenty interviews with grandparents, mother, father, and grandchild residing in five intergenerational families in Pakistan. Separate themes emerged in all the three generations, including subjective health criteria, social relations, inner standards, and religious aspect for grandparents; subjective health criteria, social relations, inner standards, and financial independence for parents; and subjective health criteria, social relations, autonomy, and academic aspect for grandchildren. These themes suggest a need to refine the concept of successful aging in Pakistan. The current study adds to the literature of successful aging in cross-cultural studies

    No full text
Drug abuse among in-school adolescents is a problem which the government of Nigeria and indeed some other countries are yet to find a lasting solution to. Drug abuse among school children can disrupt the smooth running of teaching and learning in school. One of the ways of solving the problem is by trying to find out what leads in-school adolescents into the act. The objectives of this study were to examine the predisposing factors to drug abuse among in-school adolescents in Kwara State and to examine the influence of the variables of gender, age, religion and level of study on the respondents’ response on the predisposing factors. A descriptive research design was adopted for the study. The population for the study comprised of the adolescents in secondary school and university. A sample of 403 students were selected through a multistage sampling procedure in order to participate in the study. Data was collected via a questionnaire titled ‘Predisposing Factors to Drug Abuse (PFDA)’. The questionnaire was validated by experts in test and measurement design. It has a reliability coefficient of 0.68 which adjudged the instrument to be reliable. Data was analysed with mean, rank order, t-test and analysis of variance. Hypotheses were tested at a 0.05 level of significance. Findings showed that the factors that predispose in-school adolescents to drug abuse were: peer influence, depression, lack of good parental care, low self-esteem, poor academic performance, among other factors. Findings further revealed that age, gender, religion and level of education did not make the respondents differ in their responses on the predisposing factors to drug abuse among in-school adolescents. It is recommended that counsellors, parents and stake holders in education should initiate a serious campaign regarding sensitization against drug abuse. It is also recommended that academic programs should be learner-centred

The Effects Pornography has on Dating and Gender Norms

    No full text
In this paper, I plan to review the research and findings on how pornography influences gender norms within society and how this has a positive and/or negative impact on relationships and intimacy. During my review, I will explore the different aspects of how pornography influences dating and intimacy, and gender norms within our society. I hypothesize that due to the overwhelming rates of aggression, violence, and objectification of women in mainstream pornographic videos and the surging rates of users viewing these videos on a consistent basis, pornography has a negative influence on dating and gender norms
