Are Locally Made Sanitary Products Consumer-Cost Friendly?
The COVID-19 pandemic has not only resulted in a staggering number of casualties but has also led to a significant depletion in the availability of crucial sanitary supplies worldwide. In the province of Northern Samar, this shortage was keenly felt, with essential items like face masks, rubbing alcohol, and soap becoming scarce within the first week of the gradual closure of businesses. Consequently, individuals with limited financial means encountered immense challenges in obtaining these vital sanitary products to safeguard themselves against the deadly virus. As the sole public institution of higher education in Northern Samar, the University of Eastern Philippines (UEP) took proactive measures to address the dwindling supply of sanitary goods. Leveraging its research and development unit, UEP embarked on initiatives to bolster local communities\u27 access to essential items. Notably, these efforts included the production of antibacterial bar soap derived from Salacia korthalsiana Miq. (Polipog) and bioethanol extract sourced from Nypa fruticans (Nipa) palm. These innovative products developed by UEP were subsequently distributed to underserved communities across Northern Samar. Through a comprehensive cost-benefit analysis, it was established that UEP\u27s offerings were significantly more affordable compared to those available in commercial outlets. This underscores the potential for UEP, with adequate financial backing from both internal and external sources, to continue developing cost-effective sanitary solutions tailored to economically disadvantaged communities\u27 needs
A Normalised Difference Vegetation Index Model for Maize Crop Performance Monitoring and Cropland Area Mapping in Sudan Ecological Zone of Nigeria
The monitoring and mapping of crops remotely are critical for easy identification of stressed crop, prompt response to part of the crop field that requires immediate attention and the potential harvest as well as for agricultural field management. Optical remote sensing offers one of the most attractive options for vegetation indices evaluation and some optical remote sensing data are readily available free for this application, especially, Sentinel-2A, which is equipped with a multispectral sensor (MSI), which enables calculation of some vegetation indices and assessment of vegetation health and status. However, serious attention has not been given to the potential of vegetation indices calculated from MSI data in the developing countries, Nigeria inclusive. Thus, the study therefore calculated the time series NDVI for the length of the growing season for the selected crops (Maize) and geometrically calculated area of the farm plot size. In this study. The study used the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index and Supervised Image classification technique for the crop health assessment and cropland area mapping for maize. The result showed the mean, standard deviation, range, minimum and maximum NDVI values for all the farm plots over the growing season from planting period to the harvesting period for the selected crop. The average NDVI value in May which marks the onset of the growing season for maize in the study area ranges from 0.044 to 0.148. In July, which represents the period of the grain filing stage ranges from 0.136 to 0.348 and in August, which is the maturity stage for harvest ranges from 0.110 to 0.450. Also, it was observed that cropland area is 194.973269 Square Km. It is therefore evident that the results of our NDVI analysis and cropland area mapping are good insights into solving national agricultural planning problems and agricultural resources allocation for effective agricultural practices for national food security. Our results showed that vegetation indices had the greatest contributions in identifying specific crop types and crop conditions during the growing season
Influence of Cultural Beliefs and Values on the Provision of Guidance Services
The study explores the impact of cultural beliefs and values on the provision of guidance services in Ghana. Using a purposive sampling technique, the study recruited eight participants. The study employed the qualitative design method, the data was collected through semi-structured interviews and analysed using thematic analysis. The findings suggest that cultural beliefs and values play a significant role in the help-seeking behaviours of people with mental health issues. Traditional healing practices, including herbal remedies and spiritual interventions, are often preferred to Western Counselling approaches, and there is a strong emphasis on the importance of family and community support. Additionally, gender roles and family dynamics can act as cultural barriers to seeking counselling services. To address these cultural barriers, the study recommends the development of culturally sensitive and relevant counselling services that incorporate traditional healing practices and are delivered in locations that are accessible and acceptable to members of the community. There is also a need for increased education and awareness about the benefits of counselling services and efforts to reduce the stigma associated with mental health issues
Novel Mathematical Models for Prediction of Spent Engine oil Interactions with Vernonia amygdalina Leaf Extract
Aims: The michaelis-menten biokinetic model was used for the determination of key biokinetic parameters; maximum specific rate constant ( and michaelis-menten constant ( including the total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (TPAH) degradation rate equation in the biostimulation of spent engine oil (SEO) – contaminated soil using vernonia amygdalina leaf (bitter leaf) extract.
Study Design: Single factor experiment in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) was used in this study.
Place and Duration of Study: Research farm, Rivers state university, Port-Harcourt, Nigeria, between April 2023 and May 2023.
Methodology: TPAH was quantified by the standard method, according to USEPA method using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The experiment consisted of 4 reactors replicated thrice including the control (Labelled A to D) comprised of soil, SEO and bitter leaf extract in the ratios of 8:1:0.5, 8:1:1, 8:1:1.5, and 8:1:0, respectively, after 8 weeks of treatment.
Results: The results obtained shows that TPAH concentration dropped by 42.3 – 63.9% from 98.73mg/kg-1 with an average reduction of 52% was achieved in all treatment reactors. The average of was 4.4mg/kg-week and was 79.2mg/kg while the TPAH degradation was deduced as at any TPAH concentration. The validation of the developed model indicates a high coefficient of determination (r2) ranging from 0.927 to 0.992 and a low root mean square error of 9.08 to 20.81mg/kg. This statistical tool effectively shows the potential of the model to predict TPAH concentration in the biostimulation of spent engine oil-polluted soil using bitter leaf extract
Conclusion: Up to 63.9% TPAH reduction was achieved for the stated period. The evaluation results show the potential of the model to predict TPAH in the biostimulation of SEO–contaminated sandy loam soil using bitter leaf extract
Entrepreneurship Education: Panacea for Unemployment and Poverty among Business Education Graduates in South-South, Nigeria
This study investigated Entrepreneurship Education as Panacea for unemployment and poverty among Business Education graduates in South-South, Nigeria. It adopted the descriptive survey design, two research questions and two hypotheses guided the study. The target population which served as sample comprised 217 Business Education Lecturers in universities south-south, Nigeria. A questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection. The questionnaire had two parts: part A contained 4 items of demographic variables of respondents – name of university, sex, university type (Federal or State), mode of entry. Part B contained 10 items based on the two research questions: Research Question One contained 5 items and Research Question Two contained 5 items. The questionnaire was structured on a 4 – point scale of responses: Very High Extent 4 – points, High Extent 3 – points, Low Extent 2 – points, Very Low Extent 1 – point. There was face and content validity of the instrument. The instrument was validated by experts in Business Education and Measurement and Evaluation at the Delta State University, Abraka. The reliability of the instrument was ascertained through Cronbach Alpha and the results of the two research questions are – r = 0.87 and r = 0.88 respectively. A total of 217 copies of the questionnaire were administered to 217 Business Education Lecturers in all the universities offering Business Education Programmes in South- south, Nigeria. 202 copies were fully completed and returned indicating a return rate of 93.09 %. The Data collected were analyzed using mean and standard deviations. The findings showed the respondents affirming to a high extent that Entrepreneurship Education can help in eradicating unemployment and poverty by sustaining Entrepreneurship and creating wealth. It was therefore recommended among others that Entrepreneurship Education should be integrated in the education curriculum and government should establish Enterprise Development centres to promote Entrepreneurship Education
Relationship between Safety Awareness and Safety Compliance in Small and Medium Scale Enterprise in Akwa-Ibom State Nigeria
The study aims to evaluate the relationship between safety awareness and compliance with safety behaviours in small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs) in Akwa-Ibom State, Nigeria. The study employed a purposive non-probability sampling technique combined with cluster sampling, surveying 179 respondents across various manufacturing sectors. Data were collected using the Occupational Safety and Compliance of SMEs Questionnaire (OSCSMEQ) and a safety audit checklist. Descriptive statistics, Pearson Correlation Analysis, and multiple linear regression were employed for data analysis. The findings revealed a critical need for improvement in job safety, coworker awareness, supervisor engagement, and management commitment within Akwa Ibom SMEs. Strong positive degree & level of significance between job safety awareness and compliance, coworker awareness and compliance and supervisor awareness and compliance underscore the significance of safety knowledge and leadership in shaping adherence to safety protocols. Top management\u27s commitment emerges as a key influencer not only on compliance but also on worker satisfaction with safety programs
Effect of Tea Extract and Probiotics on Growth Performance and Carcass Yield of Broiler Chickens
Antibiotic-resistant bacteria have emerged as a result of the sharp rise in the usage of antibiotics as a necessary component of poultry and cattle production. Green tea, which has antioxidant properties, and probiotics, which are living microbial substances, are thought to be suitable alternatives to antibiotics in chicken diets since they have been linked to improved bird development and health.
Aims: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of tea extracts and probiotics on the growth performance and carcass yield of broiler chickens.
Place and Duration of Study:The experiment was performed at Department of Physiology, Faculty of Veterinary, Animal and Biomedical Sciences,Khulna Agricultural University, Khulna-9100, Bangladesh during the period from January 2023 and April 2023.
Methodology: A total of 200 one day old Cobb 500 broiler chicks were randomly allotted to 5 groups (40 chicks in each group). All were kept in cages for a period of 5 weeks. Dietary treatments used in this experiment were antibiotic free group (basal diet as a control), antibiotic-added group, tea extract group, probiotic group and a combination of tea extract and probiotic group. A starter diet from day 1 to 21 and a grower diet from day 22 to 35 were fed. Weekly assessments of growth performance parameters were documented, and on the 35th day, carcass yield were measured.
Results:The highest body weight gain was observed significantly (P<0.05) in Group E which was 2200gm in comparison to other groups. Total feed consumed by birds was highest in group D (3360gm) whereas the lowest feed consumed in group B treated by antibiotics (3198gm). Significant differences (P<0.05) were observed among feed consumption of different groups. However, the best feed conversion ratio (FCR) was observed in Group E (1.48) followed by Group D (1.58), Group C (1.60), Group A (1.61) and the worst FCR was recorded in group B (1.64) at 35th days. Among the groups; group E obtained the highest dressed weight followed by D, C and A whereas the lowest dressed weight was reported in B group.
Conclusion: Hence, the results suggested that better growth performance could be achieved in broilers supplemented with probiotics and tea extract and these can be used as herbal growth promoter
Crystalline Copper Nanomaterials for Advanced Ceramic: A Comprehensive Review for Functional Ceramic Coating Approaches
Copper nanoparticles (Cu NPs) are appealing candidates for advanced ceramic applications because of their remarkable physical, chemical, mechanical and antibacterial capabilities which have attracted much interest. This review provides an extensive analysis of the current state-of-the-art synthesis, characterization and utilization of crystalline Cu NPs for functional ceramic coatings. Emphasis is placed on the unique attributes of copper nanostructures, including their high ratio of surface to volume, tunable optical and electronic properties and remarkable thermal and electrical conductivity. The review delves into various synthetic strategies such as chemical reduction, thermal decomposition and biological synthesis in achieving proper control over shape, size and crystallinity. Furthermore, the integration of copper nanomaterials into ceramic matrices is critically examined, unveiling their role in enhancing mechanical strength, thermal stability and antimicrobial activity. Particular attention is given to developing multifunctional ceramic coatings tailored for applications in energy storage, catalysis, sensing and biomedical fields. The review also discusses challenges and future perspectives, including the scalability of production processes, environmental considerations and the development of hybrid nanocomposites for next-generation advanced ceramic materials
The Influence of Digital Finance on the Marketing Management of Commercial Banks under the Support of Mobile Social Network
The business model, application technology, and service scene of digital financial marketing business management of commercial banks should be transformed into digital form, and a digital and mobile digital financial marketing product service model should be formed to improve the marketing management effect. This should be done against the backdrop of digital finance and mobile social networks. This paper first discusses the fundamentals of commercial bank marketing management and the digital financial model of mobile social networks to examine the impact of digital and mobile marketing management on commercial banks. Second, it is suggested that mobile social networks and digital finance work together to better serve the needs of commercial banks\u27 marketing services and operations. To that end, a mechanism model of digital finance for commercial banks\u27 marketing management is implemented with the aid of mobile social networks. Finally, this paper examines the frequency with which commercial banks sell their service platforms to clients through the mobile social networks and the activities of digital finance in this area. According to the findings, commercial banks\u27 mobile digital financial marketing has a low service rate but a significant number of active users. Mobile social networks and digital financial marketing tools that push financial products in accordance with consumer preferences can increase the effectiveness of marketing management
IoT-based Facial Recognition Door Lock with Push Button Combination
A common issue in many households is the management of door keys, which can often be lost, damaged, or forgotten. This problem can be particularly frustrating when family members arrive home to find they cannot enter their residence. One potential solution to this problem is the implementation of a facial recognition system, which can be used by multiple family members to gain access to their home. The proposed system utilizes an intelligent minicomputer with a dual function, serving as both a Central Processing Unit (CPU) and a monitor screen display connected via an HDMI to VGA adapter. Additionally, the system incorporates a RealVNC Viewer (Virtual Network Computer) as a remote desktop application, accessible via a laptop or Android device. The primary aim of this research is to develop a facial recognition system that can unlock a house door by detecting and matching the user\u27s face with stored data. The minicomputer, acting as a microcontroller, captures the user\u27s face through a camera and compares it with the photo database. If a match is found, the system grants access and displays information on the Android device, indicating whether the user is known or unknown. This study employs a Research and Development (R&D) approach to enhance the effectiveness and security of home control systems using an internet network and Android devices. The system successfully detects facial objects within the camera\u27s range, with the detection point area turning left, right, or focusing towards the front of the rectangular frame. The buzzer indicator sounds when the door lock is open. The system has been tested with multiple users, with local detection distance and over a well-validated network
