An Investigation on the Distribution Channels and Demand Analysis for National Fertilizers Limited (NFL) Products in Sri Ganganagar District of Rajasthan, India
Fertilizer is one of the strategic inputs for enhancing productivity which enables the farmers to meet the growing demand for food in the country. Distribution of various fertilizers is very active and dense, chiefly done by cooperative societies, some public and private sectors. The study analyzed the distribution system of fertilizers in the Sri Ganganagar district of Rajasthan. Total number of respondents were 95 in which 75 farmers, 15 dealers and 5 wholesalers participated in the study. Farmers sought information about various fertilizers from dealers, peer experiences, company officers, demonstrations, and pamphlets. Farmers predominantly purchased fertilizers from dealers, retailers, wholesalers and though some also obtained them from other sources such as government agencies
Constraints in Adoption of Solar Photovoltaic Water Pump Sets in Haryana
The investigation aimed to find the constraints faced by adopters and non-adopters of solar photovoltaic water pump set. The study was conducted purposely in Jhajjar district of Haryana on the basis of highest number of solar photovoltaic water pump sets installed. 50 beneficiaries and 50 non-beneficiaries were taken for the study and interviewed through a well-defined questionaire. Garret ranking methodology was used to know the ranks of constraints given by farmers in adoption of solar water pump set. More than 50 per cent adopters reported major constraints like poor after sale service by the service providers, delay in installation of solar pump set, small land holdings and availability of less number of solar photovoltaic water pump set (SPWPS). Similarly, the constraints which the non-adopters highlighted in adoption of this technology for irrigation purpose were less availability of subsidized solar water pump set, high initial cost, small landholdings and lack of knowledge about the profitability of solar pump technology. Suggestions for proper implementation of this technology were also incorporated in the study
A Study on Impact of Information and Communication Technology on Farmer\u27s Knowledge and Adoption on Potato Production Technologies in Jaunpur District of Uttar Pradesh, India
The study was conducted in Jalalpur block of Jaunpur district (U.P.) selected purposively. A sample size of 120 farmers was selected through proportionate random sampling technique from five villages on the basis of land holding. The interview schedule was developed keeping in view the objective and variable sunder study and respondents were contacted personally for data collection. The mean, standard deviation, percentage, correlation were used for calculation and Drawing the inferences. The study depicted that a highest number of respondents (49.16%) was found middle age i.e. 40 to 60 year. The majority of the respondents (87.50%) were found as literate, (51.67%) of the respondents belonged to other backward class and dominance of family type was joint family system(67.50%), majority of the respondents had puccka houses (50.83%), (34.16%) of farmers were found having the size of land holding 2 to 4 ha. i.e. middle farmers. Most of the family (69.16%) reported agriculture (farming) as their main occupation and having annual income up to Rs. 2.0 lakh -3.0 lakh (40.00%). And social precipitation (45.83%) of the respondents had member of one organization. The extension contact was observed highest with Gram Pradhan under mass media information source, overall material possession of the respondents was found medium level material possession. Scientific orientation and economic motivation were found medium level with (42.50) and (48.33%) respectively. Most of the respondents had medium level of knowledge about ICTs tools (48.34%), adoption about potato production practices respondents had 40.0% fair knowledge Adoption extent of potato production practices in three categories viz .high ,medium and low. The variable like education and family annual income (lakh) were found positive and highly significant correlation with knowledge level of ICTs tools regarding potato production practices in agricultural development. The variables i.e. education and occupation were found positive and highly significant correlation with knowledge and utilization towards ICT stools. The major constraints faced by the farmers in getting knowledge about Information and Communication Technology were ‘Insufficient knowledge about ICT stools’ ‘Lack of commitment by officials for ICT stools’ ‘Lack of conviction’ ‘Perceived malpractices at different level ’and other constraints too
Adoption of Improved Sugarcane Cultivation Practices by the Farmers in Karnal District of Haryana, India
Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) is an important commercial crop of India. Sugarcane and sugar beet are used for large scale production of sugar in the world. The present study was conducted in purposively selected Karnal district of Haryana state. There are 8 blocks in Karnal district of Haryana, out of which Indri block were selected on the basis of maximum area under cultivation of sugarcane. From the list so prepared, 12 respondents were selected from 10 villages of the block which constitutes total number of 120 respondents. Majority of the respondents 55.83% fell in the medium adoption level group, whereas 25.00 per cent respondents were observed in the high adoption level group and remaining 19.17 per cent respondents formed low adoption level group. It is hereby concluded that majority of farmers were having medium level of adoption followed by high and low adoption level, respectively. Socio-economic characteristics like Annual income, Land holding, social participation and Extension contact were positively and significantly related with extent of adoption of farmers regarding recommended sugarcane cultivation practices. Whereas, positively and non-significant relationship between Age, Education, Family type and Family size and their level of adoption of recommended sugarcane cultivation practices
Evaluation of the Physiological Response of Ornamental Summer Season Annuals to Salinity Stress
Over the past several decades, the southwest zone of Punjab is encountering various problems such as waterlogging, high use of surface canal water for irrigation and swift rise in water demand lead to stagnation in saline zone due to salinity ingression. Due to salinization, most of crops failed to grow, therefore, identification of salt tolerant plants and to check the level of tolerance to salinity in order to prevent mortality plants in salt affected areas is highly required for environment sustainability. To understand these salinity issues, the present study was conducted at Punjab Agricultural University to screen four ornamental summer season annual species suitable for salt affected areas of Punjab. Selection of plant species was done on the basis of physiological changes in plant leaves. The one month old seedlings of four different annual species were grown in 8 inch earthen pots were exposed to five different concentrations of sodium chloride salinity stress (control, 30, 60, 90, and 120 mM). The factorial completely randomized block design was followed in the experiment with three replicates in each treatment. The physiological parameters viz., chlorophyll, carotenoid, relative leaf water content, electrolyte leakage and proline content were calculated to depict the salt tolerant ornamental summer season annual species. It has been concluded on the basis of physiological response, the maximum salt tolerance was observed in P. grandiflora followed by B. scoparia, T. erecta and Z. elegans
Analysis of Technical Efficiency and Determinants of Cereal Production on Family Farms in the Dogon Plateau in Mali
The area of the Dogon plateau located in central-eastern Mali is an arid agricultural region with difficult morpho-pedological and climatic conditions where peasant populations derive their income and especially their food from agriculture. The objective of this study was to determine the level of technical efficiency of family farms in this area and subsequently to identify the factors explaining their inefficiency. Data were collected from a sample of 400 farms through a quantitative survey. The stochastic frontier production method was used to determine their efficiency scores. Truncated regression was used to identify farm inefficiencies.
The results of the study show that in the Dogon Plateau area family farms have an average efficiency score of 72.75%, which means an overall loss of 27.25% of production factors. The maximum efficiency score is 92.60% against a minimum of 0.21%. In addition, it appears that less than 20% of farms in the area have a below-average technical efficiency score.
The analysis of the determinants of the technical inefficiency of farms shows that the association of agriculture with livestock, the possession of agricultural land with a land title and the cultivation of onion/shallot positively and significantly influence the level of technical efficiency of family farms in the Dogon Plateau area. Contrary to our expectations, the decrease in cultivated areas due to the residual insecurity of our study area has no significant effect on the technical efficiency of the farms
Analyzing the Trend, Change and Fluctuation in Area, Production and Productivity of Coriander in Different Districts of Chhattisgarh, India
Coriander is first largest grown spice in the country during 2020-21 India accounting for 64.41 per cent (1430 thousand metric tones). The absolute change in area of coriander grown in Mahasamund district was found to be maximum (1.07 thousand hectare) and overall Chhattisgarh state have found 8.12 thousand hectare. Korba district was the highest relative change in area of coriander grown 398.92 per cent and overall Chhattisgarh state have 130.11 per cent. Mahasamund district had the greatest absolute change and relative change in coriander production (10.47 thousand tones and 44875.72%, respectively), Chhattisgarh state was found to be 46.66 thousand tones and 314.27 per cent, respectively. In Mahasamund district, the absolute and relative change in coriander productivity was found to be the greatest (8.72 thousand tones and 3128.38%) Chhattisgarh state was found 1.47 thousand tones and 57.53 per cent. The area and production was found to be minimum and more stable in Surguja district (17.80% and 41.48%) and overall Chhattisgarh state have found 37.36 and 57.12 per cent, respectively. The productivity was found to be minimum and more stable in Raighar district (25.46%) and more variable in Mahasamund (82.22%). Variability in productivity of overall Chhattisgarh state have found to be 25.83 per cent. Simple growth rate in area, production and productivity of coriander was found to be maximum in Mahasamund district (14.92, 21.12 and 14.70%) and overall Chhattisgarh state have found 5.50, 8.51 and 3.56 per cent, respectively. Trend in area of all coriander grown districts had shown positive and highly significant except Raigharh district. For the production of all coriander gown districts had show positive and highly significant except Rajnandgaon district
Analysis and Comparison of Policy Regimes for the Value Added in Agricultural Sector
The study was conducted with the aim to compare the value added in agricultural sector in different political regimes. The study period was from 1971-2018. The data on real value added in agriculture and allied sectors were collected from the official website of FAO STATISTICS and the data on political regime scores were collected from Polity Project website. The study period was divided into three periods, each lasting 15 years, namely period I (1971–1986), period II (1987–2002), and period III (2003–2018). The triennium ending averages of the first and last years for each period were used as the base year and the current year, respectively. The analytical tools used in the study were absolute change, relative change average annual growth rate and instability index. In the first period instability was higher in democratic regimes. In the second period instability among autocratic regimes increased to 2.34 percent compared to 2.12 percent among democratic regimes. In the third period growth rate increased to 6.03 per cent in the autocratic conditions. The instability of the real value added in the agriculture sector under autocratic regimes during the second period was 2.34 percent, higher than it was for the other periods. It is important for democratic economies to adopt advantageous features of agricultural policy from autocratic regimes in order to boost economic growth
An Economic Analysis of Cost of Production and Marketing Channels of Watermelon in Banaskantha District, Gujarat, India
The objective of the study is to analyse the production costs and marketing channels of watermelon in Banaskantha District, Gujarat, India. Owing to maximum area under cultivation in the district, Deesa, Dantiwada, and Lakhani were purposefully chosen for the study. A multistage sampling method was applied and a total of 120 watermelon farmers, 20 intermediaries, and 20 consumers were selected for data collection. The basic tabular approach and the percentage method were the statistical tools used for data analysis. To estimate the cost of cultivation of the watermelon crop, the cost concept was applied. The marketing effectiveness of the channel was examined using Shepherd\u27s and Acharya\u27s approaches. The watermelon cultivation required a total of 78 man days of labour, including 58 family labours and 20 hired labours. Cost A was ₹19671.95, Cost B was ₹17172.05, and Cost C1 was ₹186087.15, for a total cultivation cost (cost C2) per hectare of ₹204695.87. This resulted in the overall cost of production per quintal of ₹537.82. According to the findings, the majority of farmers (61.67%) sell to contractors, followed by retailers (22.50%) and direct customers (15.83%). It was found that channel I had the highest marketing efficiency (Shepherd\u27s method) i.e., 33.67, followed by channel II with 9.87 and channel III with 5.97. The most effective channel in terms of marketing efficiency (Acharya\u27s method) was channel I, with an efficiency of 33.67, followed by channels II and III with an efficiency of 1.33 and 0.76 respectively. This demonstrated that watermelon farming was profitable in the research area
Designing and Validation of e-module on Agriculture for Nutrition and Health (A4NH)
There is less awareness about health and nutrition problems and at the same time lack of availability of relevant and credible modules for ready reference for the needy people in India. This has aggravated the health and nutrition problems among rural women. The very low ratio of extension workers to farmers is aggravating the problem of knowledge transfer through the traditional system, so e-learning which is supported by growing connectivity and increased penetration of electronics in rural India can be used as an alternative solution to give faster and easily accessible information to the rural women, hence e module was developed using Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2013, e-learning module was created. The module was published as a CD-ROM. The module was validated through the sample group of researchers using the validation tool conceived by Vijayragavan and Singh [1] adapted for research purposes. Validation is done using four parameters, out of 4 parameters content and design were ranked first with a mean score of 3.88, followed by the satisfaction of felt information need with a mean score of 3.85. It was found that the utility of content and ease of understanding were scored low by the experts when compared to the content and satisfaction of the need for felt information. However, in absolute terms, all the parameters had a mean score of more than 3.5 indicating high acceptability of the complete module
