    No full text
Discussion on retail business location reads like a well-trodden path, but disruption in the sector brought about by passage of time and technology means that it would be an expensive and time-consuming affair to err in retail business location. Selection of a retail business‟s location thus cannot be underscored. Dynamics of rising cost of doing business and the need to tap into a new or existing market by a retail business seeking to expand, needs to be treaded on with caution and proper research analysis is paramount. Until recently, many malls and large business infrastructure premises keep coming up and a right selection should be taken to ensure a good return on investment (ROI), as the retailing store will be locked to that location for a long period. This thesis was based on retail stores as a case. A sample of stores throughout Nairobi was subjected to in-depth analysis using variables such as regions population size and type, available infrastructure, foot traffic, and demographics using available data from the various retail stores in the County of Nairobi, and the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) seeking to establish patterns that justify or otherwise their current physical locations to guide future store location selection with the assistance of the Geographic Information System (GIS). The data was subjected to statistical analytical processes and visualization through regression techniques. The design methodology adopted in this study was design science in an attempt to explain the factors that lead retail business to choose specific localities when setting up shop. The use of raster data and spatial images from the geographical information system brought out a clear picture of the different appropriate locations of setting up retail business with the result being ascertained through a data mining process of the transaction data and other variables key to the development of the model. This data has been consistently captured over a defined period, thus testing the applicability of the model to be developed for determining the most appropriate location for retail business. Findings of this study would undoubtabley assist in making sound retail business location decisions. It will illustrate the role that statistical analysis, data mining, and GIS plays in determining not only a retailer‟s location but any business seeking to set up

Sustainability is a strategy by which an organization ensures that there is continued growth and development strategy that continues to operate in the unforeseeable future. The strategies must be good such that they should consider advocacy, good leadership, enhanced management and good governance. Donors contribute significantly in processes of development worldwide and play critical roles where there is scarcity in state funds. Globally donor funded projects carry out different activities and programs at different levels. The differences in views and thoughts of the past research indicate presence of information asymmetry on factors that contribute to sustainability of donor funded projects. Though a lot has been done to address the recurring phenomenon of monitoring and evaluation challenges, stakeholder perspective in respect to donor funded projects, the problem is notably still pervasive, requiring further investigations on the community involvement in donor funded projects especially in Machakos County where we have approximately 20 donor funded projects. The study focused on 100 employees from donor funded projects in Machakos County with a sample of 93 and the researcher heavily relied on primary data which was analyzed using SPSS. Data was analyzed using correlation and regression analysis. Presentation of data was done using charts, frequency distribution tables, and bar charts. The study established that community and stakeholder involvement in donor funded projects will promote lead to success of such projects. The study revealed that failure to embrace stakeholder training and learning culture contributed to low stakeholders’ participation in monitoring and evaluation of water projects. The study revealed that attitude of the community affects sustainability of water projects in Machakos County and the community members have the willingness to conserve the project area and that they willingly also provide suggestions and opinions to better the project. Collective measures should be taken to deal with persons vandalizing the community water project. This should be coupled with improved security offered by the security agencies to mitigate the cases of vandalism. The study recommends that a similar study be carried out in other regional water authorities in the country to establish the sustainability of donor funded projec

This study aimed at evaluating the effect of tax administration reforms on tax collection at the Kenya Revenue Authority. Specifically, the study determined the effect of internal processes reforms, taxpayer segmentation reforms, staff welfare reforms and tax audit reforms on tax collection in Kenya. Kenya’s tax regime experienced several failures in their attempt to raise the level of taxes leading to many unsuccessful tax reforms as proposed by World Bank as well as the Kenya government. However, the studies did not point out tax administration reforms as key to improved tax performance. Therefore, a gap exists in this field of study that can be filled through a Kenyan study. The researcher therefore wanted to establish the effect of tax administration reforms on tax collection at the Kenya Revenue Authority. The study was anchored on Wagner’s law of increasing state activity theory which advocates for increased public expenditure for economic growth. However, this will not be possible without funds. Therefore, the government must raise enough revenues to support the public expenditures. Wagner’s law of increasing state activity was also supported by Peacock and Wiseman theory of public expenditure as well as Clark’s critical limit hypothesis. These theories also advocate for increased taxation to finance the public expenditure. Similarly, both Lindhal’s and Pigou’s models of taxation were inculcated as both try argue for the limits of state activity as well as tax burden seeking an equilibrium for expenditure versus revenue collection. In order to achieve the study objectives, the researcher adopted a descriptive research design.A sample of 128KRA staff was selected using stratified sampling technique. Data was collected using structured questionnaire through a drop-and-pick method. The data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis with the help of Statistical Package for Social Scientists (SPSS, ver.20). The findings from the study were that internal processes reforms and taxpayer segmentation reforms had a negative effect on tax collection at the Kenya Revenue Authority while staff welfare reforms and tax audits reforms had a significant and strong positive effect on tax collection at the Kenya Revenue Authority. The study recommends for further research in this field and advice government policy makers to investigate on why tax reforms have not achieved the intended purposes in Kenya

    No full text
Social Networking Sites (SNS) such as Facebook and Twitter have become indispensable for netizens all over the world. They are an important source of information and entertainment for many users. Everyday increasing amounts of data is generated on these sites. This data is mostly comprised of unstructured text data(Talib, Hanif, Ayesha, & Fatima, 2016). Extracting useful information from this data would be tedious and time consuming. Humans are also error prone and can be affected by biases while computers are only influenced by the data. Computer assisted text analysis can help humans analyze this data much faster by automating the process (Talib et al., 2016). This includes techniques such as calculating the word frequency, sentiment analysis, text classification and topic modelling. This study will implement topic modelling to extract useful topics from Twitter data. Topic modelling helps us understand what a certain text corpus is talking about. It does this by structuring and organizing the data according to word co-occurrence in different documents and grouping the words into different topics. The output of the model helps us understand the most probable topics for a particular text and can be used to classify similar but previously unseen text. This study will explore how to obtain data from Twitter application programming interface (API) and the various natural language processing (NLP) techniques that will be used to prepare the text for analysis. This study will also explore the various text modelling algorithms and determine the most appropriate one for our data. Finally topics will be estimated from the text and use various visualizations to understand and evaluate the topics
