The Vertical Policy Harmonization Indices (VPHI)

    No full text
This dataset includes all the data compiled for the construction of two distinct Vertical Policy Harmonization Indices, the Target Index and Policy Effort Index, which measure the gap between countries’ NDCs and national policies concerning political commitment to mitigate climate change. The indices are constructed along three indicators that reflect key dimensions of climate policymaking: compliance emissions which refer to the level of emission countries aim to achieve under their GHG emission reduction targets, scope which captures the sectors covered by those targets, and policy mix which relates to the portfolio of policy instruments introduced to reduce emissions. These indicators rely on datapoints that were drawn from various sources or generated during the content-based coding of countries' NDCs and national policy documents. The compliance emissions and scope indicators draw on target- and emissions-related data (e.g., level of commitment, target type, base year emissions, sector coverage) and data for the policy mix indicator was extracted from countries' national policy documents and includes information (e.g., information type, implementation procedures, status) relating to their policy instruments for mitigating climate change. In addition to the data used to construct these indicators and indices, the Vertical Policy Harmonization Indices Dataset includes policy-level information (e.g., application period, status, type, integration). Sources and detailed descriptions of the dataset are included under the respective files. This dataset was compiled and generated during the course of the SNIS project "What international negotiators promise and domestic policymakers adopt: Policy and politics in the multi-level climate change regime". This dataset, and subsets thereof, have been utilized in related publications, including: Baker, Jack Kessel (2023): Keeping Promises? Democracies’ Ability to Harmonize Their International and National Climate Commitments. Global Environmental Politics 2023; 23 (4): 170–200. doi: https://doi.org/10.1162/glep_a_00709 Castro, Paula, Marlene Kammerer, Axel Michaelowa (2024): How Does Polycentric Engagement Relate to Countries’ NDC Ambition and Mitigation Policy Effort?. Autobiographical interview

    No full text
This dataset contains data, procedures and materials from a modified version of the Autobiographical Interview by Levine et al. (2002). Participants were asked to recount personal memories from three time periods (remote past, near past, future). In total, each participant told 6 stories, 2 for each time period. Participant's productions were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. The number of inflected verb forms produced was counted for past, present, and future tenses. A score based on internal details (episodic memory) and external details (semantic memory) was also carried out

    Temporality tasks

This dataset contains data, procedures and materials from three tasks assessing temporality: a task of assessment of temporality conveyed by temporal adverbs, a task of assessment of the completeness of action, and a questionnaire on temporality

    Surface Groups Eswatini 1984-2021

Surface groups for Eswatini (years 1984 - 2021) as georeferenced TIF files. Classified land cover (surface) of each pixel indicated as: 0 = built-up surfaces: surfaces with buildings of non-natural materials such as concrete, metal, and glass (e.g., residential buildings, industrial plants, roads) 1 = grassy surfaces: surfaces covered by grass or other plants with similar surface reflectance (e.g., natural grassland, city parks) 2 = surfaces with crop fields: surfaces with vegetation for agricultural purposes (e.g., hayfields, vineyards) 3 = forest-covered surfaces: surfaces covered by trees or other plants with similar surface reflectance (e.g., mixed forests, moors) 4 = surfaces without vegetation: surfaces with (almost) no vegetation or buildings (e.g., bare rock, sand plains) 5 = water surfaces: any type of water surface (e.g., rivers, lakes) 9 = missing surface classification, most likely due to cloud cover If a TIF file for a given year within the observation period is missing, no valid satellite imagery was available for that year (e.g., due to constant cloud cover)
