    Narrowband and ultra-wideband modulation instability in nonlinear metamaterial waveguides

    "Waveguides based on metamaterials may exhibit strongly frequency-dependent nonlinearities. In this work, we focus on the phenomenon of modulation instability in this type of waveguide, departing from a new modeling equation that ensures strict conservation of both the energy and photon number of the parametric process. In particular, we analyse the case of a waveguide with a linearly frequency-dependent nonlinear coefficient, revealing unique features such as narrowband and ultra-wideband gain spectra and the suppression of the power cutoff giving rise to an ever-growing MI gain. These markedly distinct regimes are enabled by self-steepening (SS) and manifest themselves depending upon the magnitude and sign of the SS parameter.We believe these findings to be most relevant in the context of mid-IR supercontinuum sources.

    Photon-conserving generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation for frequency-dependent nonlinearities

    "Pulse propagation in nonlinear waveguides is most frequently modeled by resorting to the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation (GNLSE). In recent times, exciting new materials with peculiar nonlinear properties, such as negative nonlinear coefficients and a zero-nonlinearity wavelength, have been demonstrated. Unfortunately, the GNLSE may lead to unphysical results in these cases since, in general, it does not preserve the number of photons and, in the presence of a negative nonlinearity, predicts a blue shift due to Raman scattering. In this paper, we put forth a modified GNLSE that can be used to model the propagation in media with an arbitrary, even negative, nonlinear coefficient. This novel photon-conserving GNLSE (pcGNLSE) ensures preservation of the photon number and can be solved by the same tried and trusted numerical algorithms used for the standard GNLSE. Finally, we compare results for soliton dynamics in fibers with different nonlinear coefficients obtained with the pcGNLSE and the GNLSE.

    Applying the monitoring breakdown structure model to trace metal content in edible biomonitors: an eight-year survey in the Beagle Channel (southern Patagonia)

    "The purpose of this paper is to investigate the trace metal content in edible biomonitors (i.e., mollusks) in the Beagle Channel (southern Patagonia) and to assess the human health risks associated with their consumption. Rationale: The monitoring breakdown structure (MBS) conceptual model was applied to four sampling campaigns (2005 → 2012) that collected 729 samples of Mytilus chilensis and Nacella magellanica. The composition of trace elements (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn) in the mollusks was determined using graphite furnace (GFAAS) or flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). We compared the mean obtained values with the maximum levels (MLs) of each element established by international organizations. Then, based on semi-structured interviews, we calculated the estimated daily intake (EDI) of local residents and compared it with safety reference doses, i.e., the provisional tolerable daily intake (PTDI), provisional maximum tolerable daily intake (PMTDI), and tolerable daily intake (TDI), as well as the benchmark dose level lower confidence limit for Pb (BMDL01, a reference point (RP)/point of departure (POD). Moreover, to obtain information about the potential health risks of ingesting heavy metals (HMs) through mollusk consumption, we evaluated the target hazard quotient (THQ) and the hazard index (HI). Findings: For Cd and Pb, 65% and 40% of bivalves exceeded the MLs established by the Mercado Común del Sur (Mercosur), respectively. Except for Cd in N. magellanica (i.e., 1.20 μg/kg/bw/day), EDI values were clearly lower than the safety reference doses. For Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn, mussels were safe for consumption and did not raise concerns for public health. Likewise, THQ values were well below one for most of the studied metals, indicating that the exposed human population is assumed to be safe. Occasional high consumers of mollusks from the most contaminated sites may be at some health risk. Originality: The food production system and the environment are complex systems; this is crucial to understand when we consider ecosystems as a food source (i.e., marine ecosystems). Here we consider edible biomonitors, that are organisms that can have a dual function. They are food, and at the same time, if properly calibrated, they can act as indicators of environmental quality. This study is the first to investigate relevant essential and non-essential trace metal content in two edible mollusks from the Beagle Channel in a long-term survey (2005 → 2012). The information variety was high; approximately thirteen thousand determinations were conducted to support the risk assessment for mollusk consumption. Other aspects connected with the health risks and the uncertainty factors related to the presence of essential and non-essential minerals in edible mollusks as well as the use of the MBS are also discussed.

    People counting using visible and infrared images

    "We propose the use of convolutional neural networks (CNN) for counting and positioning people in visible and infrared images. Our data set is made of semi-artificial images created from real photographs taken from a drone using a dual FLIR camera. We compare the performance between CNN’s using 3 (RGB) and 4 (RGB+IR) channels, both under different lighting conditions. The 4-channel network responds better in all situations, particularly in cases of poor visible illumination that can be found in night scenarios. The proposed methodology could be applied to real situations when an extensive databank of 4-channel images will be available.

    Tesis Energía y Ambiente (maestría) - Instituto Tecnológico de Buenos Aires - Karlsruher Institut für Technologie, Karlsruhe, 2020Two-phase flows with phase change are a useful phenomenon for small-scale cooling devices, where high quantities of excess heat need to be removed on a limited frame of space. Bubble formation through evaporation however is a highly dynamic process that still has not been fully investigated and is difficult to control. In order to advance further research in this area, a Volume-of-Fluid based solver is investigated for bubble growth in this thesis. The solver is based on the OpenFOAM solver interFoam and is extended with functionalities to depict evaporation processes. In this thesis, the focus is put on the solver’s ability to correctly simulate evaporation. Especially the phase-change development near the threephase contact line where the two-phase interface and the solid heated surface meet, is of interest. In this area the evaporation reaches high levels of magnitude and therefore needs special consideration. The chosen approach in this solver is a data regression to link these parately calculated values of the three-phase region with the rest of the domain. In this work bubble growth without solid structure, quasi-steady contact line evaporation and saturated pool boiling on a solid surface are simulated and compared against analytical, highly resolved and experimental results. The solver’s models are able to correctly depict the processes within a reasonable margin of error. The bubble growth in a superheated fluid gives an acceptable deviation of radius with respect to Scriven’s analytical solution. Quasi-steady evaporation also confirms the solver’s capability to correctly predict threephase contact line behavior compared to Stephan and Busse’s high-resolution simulation campaign. For saturated boiling the solver is highly dependent on grid resolution and the condensation coefficient f. However, a similar behavior with good agreement to the experiment conducted by Yaboki can be reproduced with an adequate set of parameters

    "El objetivo del presente estudio es el análisis de la viabilidad técnica y económica de un criadero de cerdos con un enfoque intensivo, sin perder de vista el bienestar animal y con reutilización de los efluentes orgánicos producidos. Se tiene un horizonte temporal para el proyecto de diez años. Este estudio se da en un contexto de crecimiento del sector, tanto del lado productivo como de la demanda, aunque con márgenes bajos y difícil rentabilidad. El proyecto se ubica en el primer eslabón de la cadena de valor porcina, partiendo desde la maternidad, llevando a los cerdos a su peso de venta, alimentandolos con un balanceado de maíz, expeller de soja, afrechillo de trigo y un suplemento vitamínico, para luego venderlos en pie. La planta de producción de alimento y el biodigestor para el tratamiento de efluentes se encuentran dentro de la propia granja.""The purpose of the following study is the analysis of the technical and economic viability of a Pig Breeding Farm with an intensive approach, considering animal welfare and recycling all the resulting organic effluents. A 10 year time frame was established. This study was carried out in a context of expansion of the field, both in the productive sector and in market demand of the product, albeit with current low profit margins and minimum financial return. The project is based in the first link of the pig farming value chain. It initiates from birth, carrying the pigs to sale weight by means of a feeding program of balanced corn, soya bean expeller, wheat bran, and multi-vitamin complement and finalizing with the live sale of the animals for human consumption.
