Analyzing the quality of Twitter data streams
"There is a general belief that the quality of Twitter data streams is generally low and unpredictable, making, in some way, unreliable to take decisions based on such data. The work presented here addresses this problem from a Data Quality (DQ) perspective, adapting the traditional methods used in relational databases, based on quality dimensions and metrics, to capture the characteristics of Twitter data streams in particular, and of Big Data in a more general sense. Therefore, as a first contribution, this paper re-defines the classic DQ dimensions and metrics for the scenario under study. Second, the paper introduces a software tool that allows capturing Twitter data streams in real time, computing their DQ and displaying the results through a wide variety of graphics. As a third contribution of this paper, using the aforementioned machinery, a thorough analysis of the DQ of Twitter streams is performed, based on four dimensions: Readability, Completeness, Usefulness, and Trustworthiness. These dimensions are studied for several different cases, namely unfiltered data streams, data streams filtered using a collection of keywords, and classifying tweets referring to different topics, studying the DQ for each topic. Further, although it is well known that the number of geolocalized tweets is very low, the paper studies the DQ of tweets with respect to the place from where they are posted. Last but not least, the tool allows changing the weights of each quality dimension considered in the computation of the overall data quality of a tweet. This allows defining weights that fit
different analysis contexts and/or different user profiles. Interestingly, this study reveals that the quality of Twitter streams is higher than what would have been expected.
Indexing continuous paths in temporal graphs
"Temporal property graph databases track the evolution over time of nodes, properties, and edges in graphs. Computing temporal paths in these graphs is hard. In this paper we focus on indexing Continuous Paths, defined as paths that exist continuously during a certain time interval. We propose an index structure called TGIndex where index nodes are defined as nodes in the graph database. Two different indexing strategies are studied. We show how the index is used for querying and also present different search strategies, that are compared and analyzed using a large synthetic graph.

Odor cueing during sleep improves consolidation of a history lesson in a school setting
"Sleep is a key factor in memory consolidation. During sleep, information is reactivated, transferred,
and redistributed to neocortical areas, thus favoring memory consolidation and integration. Although these reactivations occur spontaneously, they can also be induced using external cues, such as sound or odor cues, linked to the acquired information. Hence, targeted memory reactivation during sleep represents an advantageous tool for improving memory consolidation in real-life settings. In this study, our goal was to improve the consolidation of complex information such as that of a history lesson, using a school study session in the presence of an odor, and a reactivation round while sleeping at home on the same night of the acquisition, without using additional study sessions. We found that complex information can be associated with an odor in the classroom and that one session of reactivation during the frst night of sleep in the students’ houses improves its consolidation. These results bring new evidence for the implementation of reactivation during sleep in real-life settings.
Texture descriptors for robust SAR image segmentation
"SAR (synthetic aperture radar) and PolSAR (polarimetric synthetic aperture radar) images fulfill a fundamental role in Earth observation, due to their advantages over optical images. However, the presence of speckle noise hinders their automatic interpretation and unsupervised use, rendering traditional segmentation tools ineffective. For this reason, advanced image segmentation models are sought to overcome the limitations that make an adequate treat ment of speckled images difficult. We propose a procedure for SAR and PolSAR image clas sification, based on texture descriptors, that combines fractal dimension, a specific probability
distribution function, Tsallis entropy, and the entropic index. A vector of local texture features is built using a set of reference regions, then a support vector machine classifier is applied. The proposed algorithm is tested with synthetic and actual monopolarimetric and polarimetric SAR imagery, exhibiting visually remarkable and robust results in coincidence with quantitative qual ity metrics as accuracy and F1-score.
Comparative assessment of oxygen uptake rate of activated sludge and Escherichia coli exposed to nanomaterials
"The adverse effects of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) on bacterial populations found in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) or natural systems have been studied for more than a decade, but conflicting evidence on the matter still makes it a subject of considerable concern. In this paper, the short-term exposure impact of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (nTiO2), carboxyl-functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (f-MWCNT), and zero-valent iron nanoparticles (nZVI) toward activated sludge and Escherichia coli (E. coli) was investigated through respiration inhibition experiments. Microorganisms were exposed to nanoparticle concentrations of 50, 100 and 200 mg/L (nTiO2, f-MWCNT) and 20, 50 and 100 mg/L (nZVI). The experiments showed that nTiO2 produced no inhibition in activated sludge or E. coli; up to 100 mg/L of nZVI did not inhibit the activated sludge respiration but 50 mg/L inhibited 24 ± 3% the respiration of E. coli and damaged its cell membrane. Activated sludge respiration was inhibited 17 ± 3% with 200 mg/L of f-MWCNT while for E. coli the inhibition was 36 ± 15% and the cell membrane was damaged with a 100 mg/L dose. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed nTiO2-bacteria and nZVI-bacteria surface interaction while bacteria appeared punctured by f-MWCNT. E. coli was more susceptible than activated sludge to the nanomaterials and nZVI was more toxic than f-MWCNT for E. coli. These results demonstrated the absence of acute toxicity effects of the studied nanomaterials at those concentrations expected to occur in activated sludge facilities, and it would only be a concern in case of extremely high inputs, underscoring the resilience of WWTPs biological treatment.
