Association between hand grip strength and exercise addiction among high-level athletes: differences by sport category and sex in elite athletes
Introduction: Handgrip strength (HGS) is a key indicator of upper-body strength and overall physical fitness. While its links to health and sports performance have been widely studied, its relationship with the risk of exercise addiction (REA) remains unclear. Thus, the present study examines the relationship between HGS and REA across various sports disciplines, sexes, and national contexts, aiming to deepen our understanding of their intricate interplay. Methods: Using a cross-sectional research design, data were collected from 1,211 high-level athletes from Türkiye (n = 656) and Hungary (n = 555), spanning a wide range of competitive sports. The measures involved demographic questions, the Exercise Addiction Inventory to assess REA, and HGS assessments. Results: We found significant negative correlations between HGS and REA among Turkish female athletes competing in racquet and water sports (p < 0.05). In contrast, significant positive correlations emerged in team sports played with hands and target-based sports (p < 0.05). Statistically significant HGS-REA correlations were also observed among Turkish male athletes participating in gymnastics and esthetic sports (p < 0.05). Among Hungarian athletes, a significant HGS-REA correlation was found in male racquet sports athletes and female athletes engaged in combat sports (p < 0.05). Regardless of sports discipline, a statistically significant positive correlation was observed exclusively among Turkish female athletes (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The present study reveals that the correlations between HGS and the risk of REA may vary depending on country, sex, and type of sport. The findings indicate that HGS may be either positively or negatively associated with REA in specific sports disciplines
The effects of online pilates training on cognitive functions and dual task performance in people with multiple sclerosis: A randomized controlled study
Background: Cognitive impairments in people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) are common and aggravate dual-task (DT) performance. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of online Pilates training on cognitive functions and the DT performance of balance, walking, and functional mobility in PwMS. Method: In this randomized controlled trial, forty-six PwMS were recruited and randomly allocated into two groups. The Online Pilates group (OPG) received Pilates training via videoconferences three days per week during six weeks at home. The control group (CG) was a waitlist with no Pilates treatment. Cognitive Functions were assessed with Montreal Cognitive Asssessment (MoCA), The Trail Making Test (TMT), and The Stroop Test (ST). DT performance was assessed with mental tracking and verbal fluency during postural stability (PS), walking, and functional mobility. Results: At the end of six weeks, the interaction effects (time × group) revealed significant differences for MoCA (p = 0.024), TMT-B (p = 0.012), ST (p ≤ 0.012), PS-with mental tracking (p = 0.004), PS-with verbal fluency (p = 0.003), cadence-with mental tracking (p = 0.048), and functional mobility-with mental tracking (p = 0.043) in favor of the OPG. Additionally, MoCA, TMT, ST, and DT performance during balance and functional mobility significantly improved in after six-week online Pilates training, but did not in CG. Conclusion: Pilates training via videoconference was effective in the improvement of cognitive functions and DT performance in PwMS. Online Pilates may be considered for improving cognitive impairments and DT performances in PwMS with barriers to accessing clinics. Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT0646233

Bibliometric Analysis of Theses Published in the Field of Radiation Oncology Specialization in Türkiye
OBJECTIVE This study aims to conduct a bibliometric analysis of radiation oncology residency theses written in Türkiye. It examines the distribution of theses by year and institution, research designs, topic diversity, and their conversion rates into scientific publications. METHODS A total of 202 radiation oncology theses published between 1988 and 2024 and listed in the National Thesis Center of the Council of Higher Education were included in the study. Each thesis was evaluated based on research design, topic, type of institution, publication status, and distribution over time. Publication rates and citation counts were analyzed. Data analysis was performed using SPSS version 23, employing descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and post-hoc analyses. RESULTS 77.7% of theses were prepared at universities and 22.3% were prepared at training and research hospitals. The most common study design was retrospective descriptive (63.7%). A total of 30.7% of the theses were published in international indexed journals; excluding 2024 theses, this rate increased to 33.0%. The median time to publication was 3 years, and the median annual citation count was 0.2. A statistically significant difference was observed in publication rates based on study design and thesis year (p<0.05), while no significant association was found with institution type or cancer type. CONCLUSION One-third of radiation oncology residency theses in Türkiye are converted into scientific publications. Study design and thesis year significantly influence publication likelihood. These findings provide strategic insight for shaping educational policies and research priorities, and serve as a guide for enhancing scholarly output in the field
