    Incidence of caries and pathological findings in different positions of impacted third molars: A retrospective analysis

    Objectives: Impacted third molars(3 M), commonly known as wisdom teeth, are prone to caries and pathological formations depending on their position in the jaw. This study aimed to determine and compare the incidence of caries, pathological formations, and the superposition of the roots of the mandibular impacted third molar over the mandibular canal in different positions of impacted 3Ms. Meterials and Methods: This retrospective study was conducted on orthopantomographs of patients who presented with 3 M complaints at the Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa University Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department between 2019 and 2023. The 3 M were classified according to their position by two researchers independently and were evaluated for caries, pathology, and nerve superposition. The position of the 3Ms classified using Pell and Gregory and Winter's classifications. The primary outcome variable was the presence of caries in the 3 M The secondary outcome variable was the presence of pathological formations around the 3 M The tertiary outcome variable was the superposition of the roots of the mandibular 3 M over the mandibular canal. Results: A total of 7,038 patients were included in the study, with 53.74 % being female. The mean age was 32.15±7.2 years. The highest incidence of caries was associated with the vertical position in both maxillary and mandibular 3Ms (right maxillary: 9.98 %, P < 0.001; left maxillary: 12.74 %, P < 0.001; left mandibular: 11.66 %, p = 0.003; right mandibular: 11.69 %, p = 0.031). Pathological formations were most commonly observed in the vertical position, but the highest incidence was found in the horizontal or mesioangular positions (right maxillary: 36.84 %, p < 0.001; left maxillary: 40 %, p < 0.001; left mandibular: 62.04 %, p < 0.001; right mandibular: 62.25 %, p < 0.001). Nerve superposition was most common in the vertical position but was highest in the distoangular position (left mandibular: 74.69 %, p < 0.001; right mandibular: 76.66 %, p < 0.001). Conclusions:: The position of 3Ms plays a critical role in the development of complications such as caries and pathological formations. Prophylactic extraction may be considered more seriously in cases where the position of the tooth poses a higher risk of complications

    Noise sensitivity, attention deficit-hyperactivity levels and individualized care behaviors of nurses working in the emergency department: A descriptive and cross-sectional multicenter study

    Aim: This study was conducted to determine the noise sensitivity, attention deficit-hyperactivity level, and individualized care behaviors of nurses working in the emergency department. Methods: The descriptive and cross-sectional multicenter study was conducted with 232 nurses working in the emergency department between December 2023 and February 2024. Data were collected using the Personal Information Form, Weinstein Noise Sensitivity Scale, Individualised Care Scale, and Adult Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder Self-Report Scale. We adhered to the STROBE checklist for reporting. Results: The mean age of the nurses was 30.33 ± 7.12 years (Min:23; Max:62) and 63.4 % were female. The mean total score of the Weinstein Noise Sensitivity Scale was 91.09 ± 16.06, the mean total score of Individualised Care Scale-A was 3.56 ± 0.70, the mean total score of Individualised Care Scale-B was 3.72 ± 0.74, and the mean total score of Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder Self-Report Scale was 28.40 ± 9.57. Conclusion: It was found that nurses had high levels of noise sensitivity, individualized care behaviors, and attention deficit hyperactivity. In the emergency department, high noise levels, distraction and the need for rapid intervention may make nursing care difficult. It is recommended that noise sources be identified and noise reduction interventions be made

    Synthesis and characterization of surfactants derived from phenolphthalein: In vivo and in silico studies of their antihyperlipidemic effect

    New phenolphthalein-based surfactants were synthesized, and their antihyperlipidemic activity was evaluated through both in vivo and in silico investigations. The target compounds were synthesized using the O-alkylation reaction between phenolphthalein and different alkyl halides, i.e., decyl bromide (L-1), undecyl bromide (L-2), and dodecyl bromide (L-3). The structures of the synthesized surfactants were established through spectroscopic techniques such as IR, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR, as well as confirmed by mass spectrometry. In vivo experiments were conducted on rats with Triton-induced hyperlipidemia, and the results demonstrate a significant reduction in serum triglycerides, total cholesterol (TC), and glycerol (Gly), as well as an improvement in the high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol/TC ratio in hyperlipidemic rats treated with a dose of 100 mg/kg (L-1, L-2, and L-3) per body weight when compared with anti-hyperlipidemic drug. The new phenolphthalein surfactants showed an effective antihyperlipidemic activity, similar to that of the marketed drug. In addition, in silico molecular docking studies were performed to assess the interaction that can occur between the synthesized surfactants and the target SARS-CoV-2 N protein (5KKN) involved in lipid metabolism. The achieved outcomes showed that the investigated surfactant derivatives had a strong affinity for the target proteins, supporting their in vivo antihyperlipidemic activity. The quantum chemical parameters of the molecules studied were calculated by calculations made at the HF level at the 6-31++G(d,p) level in gas and water phases

    Adaptation of the Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause Symptoms and Vaginal Treatments Acceptability Questionnaire Into Turkish

    Introduction and Hypothesis: This study aimed to adapt the original instrument titled Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause Symptoms and Vaginal Treatments Acceptability Questionnaire into Turkish and to evaluate the validity and reliability of the obtained Turkish version. Methods: This methodological study was conducted with 505 postmenopausal women receiving care at the women’s health clinic of a public hospital in Türkiye. The adaptation process included forward–backward translation, expert review, pilot testing, and statistical analyses. Construct validity was assessed using confirmatory factor analysis, and internal consistency was evaluated using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. Additionally, discriminant validity analysis was performed. Results: The results of the confirmatory factor analysis supported the original three-factor structure of the questionnaire in the Turkish sample (CFI 0.973, TLI 0.976, RMSEA 0.027). The overall Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of the scale was 0.853, with subscale values ranging from 0.787 to 0.930. Significant differences were found between the upper and lower 27% groups, indicating strong discriminative power. Negatively worded items in domain C adversely affected internal consistency, and their revision is recommended. Conclusion: The Turkish version of the Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause Symptoms and Vaginal Treatments Acceptability Questionnaire is a valid and reliable self-report instrument for assessing symptom burden, quality of life, and treatment acceptability in postmenopausal women. It can be used in clinical practice for diagnosis and follow-up, and as a culturally sensitive data collection tool in scientific research
