Spatially Fractionated Radiation Therapy Implementation At Intermountain Cancer Center
Spatially Fractionated Radiation Therapy (SFRT) is a treatment method that distributes a non-uniform dose with alternating peaks and valleys within a tumor. It is an effective technique to treat large and bulky tumors with limited toxicity to surrounding Organs At Risk (OAR), which is normally hard to treat using traditional radiation therapy methods. It can either be delivered by using a three-dimensional conformal planning technique (either physical block or virtually using Multi Leaf Collimators (MLC)), or by Lattice Radiation Therapy (LRT) using Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) technique. The scope of this work is to compare and implement SFRT treatment techniques at Intermountain Cancer Center (ICC). This requires the investigation of physical and dosimetric characteristics of the grid, describing its clinical implementation and verification, creating treatment plans on test patients using different methods of SFRT, assessment of the parameters that decides the acceptability of the plan, establishing Quality Assurance (QA) methods, and making recommendations about treatment planning and dose reporting. All the measurement results for SFRT commissioning were found to be within clinically acceptable agreement for implementation at ICC
Adapting Traditional Flamenco Music for The Modern Marimba Artist
This document is a compilation of information and exercises for the percussionist to learn how to play Traditional Flamenco on marimba. The document contains a brief history of flamenco and the explanation of the elements of four different palos flamencos (subgenres) to introduce the marimbist to the basic musical elements and structure of each palos flamencos. It also includes musical exercises written specifically for marimba. These exercises are traditional components of authentic Flamenco music and can be used in performances as a soloist or as part of a Flamenco ensamble.
Flamenco music has three main elements: El cante, el toque, and el baile. This document is focusing on the instrumental element el toque and also developing some techniques for the marimba player.
Flamenco subgenres called palos flamencos present features like time signature, harmonic progression, tempo, and tonality. The palos can share some of the features with other palos, just like a deck of cards. In this document four of the most popular palos are being studied for the marimba player: Solea, Bulerias, Tangos Flamencos, and Rumba Flamenca.
Solea is considered the first flamenco subgenre derived from the Spanish. It is one of the Bulerias is the second palo in this document. The rhythmic structure is very similar to solea, with light variations on the accents and the tempo and it is also considered one of the most important subgenres.
Tangos Flamencos are derived from Afro-Cuban rhythms and the Argentinean Tango due the immigration from the Americas to Spain. Tangos Flamencos are considered an important subgenre among flamenco artist, reason why it is included in this document.
Rumba is also an Afro-Cuban rhythm spread along Central and South America and it was also “exported” from the Americas to Spain and even though Rumba Flamenca is considered a minor palo it is what worldwide is known as Flamenco music.
“Adapting Traditional Flamenco Music for the Modern Marimba Artist” also includes transcriptions and ideas for how to solve the unique guitar effects in flamenco music to be played on marimba. The exercises and excerpts are written for 4-mallet marimba techniques but some of them including the appendix can be played with two mallets
Effectiveness of an Occupational Therapy-Focused Stroke Transitional Care Program in an Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility
Introduction: As a global health issue, stroke is one of the most common causes of disability for individuals around the world. The American Heart Association (2024) mentions that stroke is the fifth-highest cause of mortality and the top cause of disability in the United States. Objective: This project aimed to assess the change in the perceived readiness of individuals after implementing an occupational therapy (OT)-focused transitional care program for patients with stroke and their caregivers before returning home. Methods: The recruitment process for participants involved purposive sampling methods. The study utilized both the Readiness for Hospital Discharge Scale-Short Form (RHDS-SF) or Preparedness Assessment for the Transition Home After Stroke Instrument®s2018 (PATH-s) to assess the perceived readiness of individuals with stroke and their caregivers at an inpatient rehabilitation facility (IRF) before and after completing the Stroke Transitional Care Program (STCP). Results: An OT-focused STCP increased perceived readiness to return home before hospital discharge for patients with stroke; contrary, it did not significantly affect caregivers. Conclusion: The stroke population and the OT profession will benefit from further research to contribute to the limited body of knowledge and the continual application of STCP in practice
The Association of Dietary Micronutrient Intake and Systemic Inflammation among Patients with Type 2 Diabetes: A Cross-Sectional Study
Inflammation contributes to the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes (T2DM). This study sought to document how the systemic biomarkers of inflammation varied based on food choices among patients with T2DM. This cross-sectional study enrolled ambulatory patients with T2DM. Demographic and clinical information was collected. Five drops of fingerstick blood were collected using an absorbent paper device (HemaSpot HFR). C-reactive protein (CRP), serum amyloid A protein (SAA), and fibrinogen were measured using a Luminex assay. Patient-generated 7-day food diaries were analyzed using a validated food processor software. Data were analyzed by Pearson’s correlation tests, linear regression and logistic regression with the significance level set at 0.05. Among the 71 participants, 43 (60.6%) were females. The average age and duration of T2DM were 64.1 ± 10.3 and 15.8 ± 9.1 years, respectively. In a simple linear regression run with selected micronutrients, iron [F (1, 53) = 5.319, p \u3c 0.05, adj. R2 = 0.074] significantly predicted plasma CRP. This significance was lost with multiple linear regressions including age, gender, BMI, T2DM duration, T2DM complications, glycohemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and other micronutrients. The average intake of most micronutrients by the participants was below the recommended daily intake. A higher intake of iron-rich foods was associated with higher levels of systemic inflammation in a simple linear regression model, but the association was not present after adjusting for patient factors like age, gender, BMI and T2DM-related variables. This relationship needs to be explored further given the key role of inflammation in the pathogenesis of T2DM and its associated complications

Six-Month Follow-Up Comparing AIT and EFT in the Reduction of Negative Emotions Associated with a Past Memory
Statistics have shown that about sixty percent of individuals with psychiatric illness do not respond adequately to standard treatments, yet only 1% of research studies are focused on developing new therapeutic strategies for these patients (McIntyre et al., 2023). This study investigated the long-term efficacy of Advanced Integrative Therapy (AIT) as compared to Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), specifically evaluating the durability of the resolution of emotional distress tied to a single memory six months post-treatment. The study began with 72 participants: and 51 completed a follow-up survey, resulting in a response rate of 70.8%. The sample was predominantly female (65%), non-Hispanic (80%), and employed (84%). Demographically, over 40% identified as White, 29.4% as Asian, 9.8% as Black, and 9.8% as “other” racial backgrounds. Of those surveyed, 43 participants (84.3%) accurately recalled which treatment group they were assigned to, with 28 (65%) in the EFT group and 15(35%) in the AIT group. At the six-month follow-up, the study found no significant differences in Subjective Units of Distress (SUD) scores between the two groups (1.7 ± 0.5 for AIT vs. 1.3 ± 0.6 for EFT, p = 0.1), suggesting that both therapies are equally effective in producing a durable reduction in reducing emotional distress over time. Both groups maintained low SUD scores(78.6% in AIT vs. 60.0% in EFT, p \u3e 0.05). Historical SUD scores were not significantly different as well (1.03 ± 1.10 vs. 1.29 ± 0.71, p = 0.2), further supporting an equivalent efficacy between the interventions
