Library Post Partnerships: A Solution to Increase Access to Public Library Facilities in the Las Vegas Metropolitan Area

    No full text
Resource deserts are areas with residential populations that lack access to public amenities. Current standards in the field of Library and Information Sciences recommend a two-mile buffer zone around public libraries in order to ensure access and use of facilities. In the Las Vegas metropolitan area, multiple library deserts can be identified overlapping with areas designated for community development. This research shows that public libraries provide resources that can improve community metrics, notably educational and vocational outcomes, but that many neighborhoods in the region lack access to a facility. Increasing the distribution of public libraries as they are currently architecturally designed is an ideal goal, but can neither match the current need for community development nor be implemented at the rate of population growth. Instead, alternative solutions to expand public library facilities, while maintaining access to indoor spaces, materials, and staff, are explored. The concluded best practice would be to explore library post partnerships, which are public/private space-sharing agreements with organizations located in library deserts. Library post partnerships would decrease the costs of expansion and facility maintenance, strengthen community relationships, and reach patrons who may not otherwise access library services. The issue of library deserts is not unique to one city, however, and becomes more salient as resources for public amenities are influenced by economic and political shifts. The proposed policy solution is foundational to creating a model for increasing library access in the Las Vegas metropolitan area and beyond

Introduction: ❖ Some designers say AI helps boost creativity, new ideas, and overall work efficiency. ❖ The fashion brand Collina Strada received backlash for using AI-made prints. ❖ By 2030, AI data centers in the U.S. may use 323 terawatt-hours of electricity — a huge increase in power demand. ❖ Over 200 artists in the music industry are pushing back against AI, saying it hurts human creators’ rights. ❖ AI tools have been caught using artists’ work without permission to train image generators.https://oasis.library.unlv.edu/durep_podium/1060/thumbnail.jp

The Coso Paradox: An Additional Perspective of Indigenous Identity

    No full text
The Coso Mountain Range in Inyo County, California is an archaeological site rich with evidence of human interactions throughout prehistory. One of the most striking features is Coso’s abundance of rock art, estimated at over 100,000 etchings, with over half depicting Ovis canadensis (Bighorn Sheep). Coso’s rock art has been long-debated as a site of “shamanistic” prevalence, including vision quests, rain god worship , and interpretations of fertility. While spirituality is an integral part of many Indigenous cultures, it is highly unlikely that such a mass creation spanning hundreds of years and multiple cultural groups would be solely spiritual.https://oasis.library.unlv.edu/durep_posters/1257/thumbnail.jp

Piloting the Inclusion of Dollar Stores in the Modified Retail Food Environment Index (Mrfei) in Urban Clark County, Nevada

    No full text
Food insecurity is the condition of having limited or uncertain access to adequate food. It contributes to poor diet-related health outcomes which are in turn influenced by the food environment. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) developed the Modified Retail Food Environment Index (mRFEI) to characterize food environments by measuring the proportion of healthy and non-healthy retailers. The CDC mRFEI considers a variety of establishments but fails to include dollar stores, which contribute to the food environment by offering food and, in some cases, fresh produce. This study proposed an “expanded mRFEI” that modified the CDC mRFEI methodology to include dollar stores. Both indices were compared to assess whether the expanded mRFEI significantly changed the proportion of food environment classifications (food deserts, food swamps, and healthful tracts) among urban Clark County census tracts. There were 1,356 food retailers included in the CDC mRFEI and 76 dollar stores (10 healthy and 66 less healthy), added to the expanded mRFEI. Urban Clark County’s median mRFEI score of 13.33 remained unaltered after including dollar stores. The generalized McNemar’s test showed that the expanded mRFEI did not significantly change the number of food deserts (mRFEI = 133, expanded mRFEI = 128), swamps (mRFEI = 119, expanded mRFEI = 124), or healthful census tracts (mRFEI = 254, expanded mRFEI = 254). The findings suggest that the measurement of food environments is complex, and efforts to do so require a more comprehensive and systemic approach
