    Beyond the Nursery: Unraveling Maternal and Neonatal Factors Associated With NICU Admissions in Nevada (2015–2021)

    Overview This project focuses on investigating the relationship between maternal medical conditions, socioeconomic factors, and NICU admission levels among Medicaid beneficiaries in Nevada. Approach: •A retrospective analysis was conducted using linked data from the Birth Registry and Nevada Medicaid Claims from 2015 to 2021. •Infant records were analyzed using univariate and bivariate statistical methods, with a significance level set at 5%. •Logistic regression models were used to examine associations between maternal characteristics and NICU admission levels.     Implants and Electrophysiology: Electrophysiology is the study of the electrical properties of cells and tissues, neuronal implants enable high-resolution recordings of neuron action potentials and their locations in the brain. Data gathered is key in investigating/mapping cognition and effects of neurological pathologies on regular neural systems. Hyperdrive Model: Previous model was restricted to two implant sites, and displayed frequent tetrode deformation Hyperdrive was modified to support four implant sites and 16 independently movable tetrodes using 3D modeling software, while keeping its weight below 1.5 grams.     Leukemia and Thyroid Cancer in Relation to RECA Boundaries

    A total of 1,054 test were conducted by the United States between 1945 and 1992. This is more Atomic tests than all other countries combined. Of those tests 928 were conducted at the Nevada Test Site located 65 miles from Las Vegas, Nevada. These tests spread nuclear fallout throughout the United States causing the people in nearby communities to become sick. The public outcry spurred the passing of the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act in 1990 (RECA) It’s scope of coverage was broaded in 2000. Despite many groups fighting for further expansion, the Act expired in June of 2024. Of the different diseases caused by radiation exposure I have chosen Thyroid Cancer and Leukemia to study. They are both covered under RECA and manifest very differently. Thyroid cancer can take years even decades after initial exposure to manifest.     Revisiting Bennett’s Hypothesis: The Unintended Effects of Student Financial Aid on the Cost of College

    As higher education strives to be more inclusive, escalating tuition costs pose a significant barrier to accessibility. Government efforts to increase federal financial aid aim to mitigate this issue, but according to William Bennett’s hypothesis, such interventions may inadvertently increase college costs. This study investigates Bennett’s Hypothesis with the latest cross-sectional data from the National Center for Education Statistics. Focusing on 2-year and 4-year U.S. public and private nonprofit colleges, the study examines the effects of government and institutional financial aid on the cost of attendance. The analysis is structured around financial aid packaging institutional, charging variances, and financial aid determinants that provide evidence supporting Bennett’s Hypothesis, revealing a correlation between financial aid and rising tuition costs across different types of institutions

    Offering a Manufacturing Curriculum Online to Rural Schools: The case of the NIMM Project

    This case study examined the extent to which the two implemented manufacturing pathways of the NIMM project successfully facilitated access and engaged high school students from rural regions in two manufacturing curricula. The program consisted of two tracks or career pathways for manufacturing technicians: Mechanical CADD technician and Electro-Mechanical technician. The Mechanical CADD program was delivered online, and the Electro-Mechanical program was delivered online and through a summer skills academy. Findings include, students showed less preference for CTE manufacturing courses in an online asynchronous format, CTE instructors need to be trained to teach online, proper IT infrastructure is needed for a successful online course in rural regions, teaching CTE online will be more effective when it is hybridized, students have opportunity for hands-on experience and manufacturing tours, and offering CTE online can be an alternative to produce career pathways in manufacturing for rural students

    There Is an Imposter Among Us: An Affective Constitutive Rhetorical Study on RPGS

    This study explores how players verbally and affectively connect the emotional impact of playing as crewmates or imposters to the game design of Among Us. Through video analysis of gameplay sessions and follow-up focus group interviews, the research highlights how crewmates exhibit heightened affective and gestural responses when making accusations or facing eliminations, while imposters adopt a more controlled, neutral demeanor to maintain deception. The study identifies moments where players\u27 emotional and physical reactions peak, offering insights into how Among Us fosters complex emotional investments through its mechanics. These findings contribute to game studies by demonstrating how affect and role embodiment shape player interactions and decision-making in social deception games

    More Than a Feeling: A Mixed-Methods Examination of Transgender Community Connectedness and Associations with Suicidality

    Transgender adults experience significantly higher rates of suicidal ideation than the general population. A sense of transgender community connectedness (STCC) may reduce this risk, but predictors of STCC and its association with suicidal ideation are understudied. This cross-sectional mixed methods study examined STCC and past-year suicidal ideation in relation to dimensions of transgender community connectedness (TCC) at each level of the Social Ecological Model using data from a U.S. survey of transgender adults (n = 126). About half (52.4%) felt connected to the transgender community, and 27.0% reported past-year suicidal ideation. Hierarchical logistic regression models for both outcomes showed good fit. In the STCC model, visibility lost significance after the first step, while sufficient trans ties predicted 2.96 times higher odds of STCC (aOR = 2.96, 95% CI [1.12, 7.84], p = .029), compared to those with insufficient trans ties. Relational factors, including high perceived peer support (aOR = 5.92, 95% CI [1.88, 18.59], p = .002) and received peer support (aOR = 2.71, 95% CI [1.01, 7.24], p = .039), were also significantly associated with higher odds of STCC compared to low support. In the suicidal ideation model, odds were 69% lower for those with a college degree compared to those without, and 77% lower for those with high STCC compared to low STCC. Odds were 7.47 times higher for those reporting serious psychological distress and 4.33 times higher for those who received peer support, compared to those without distress or who did not receive support. Open-ended responses emphasized TCC’s role in fostering safety, self-expression, existential validation, lifesaving support, and belonging. Findings support the need to develop a multilevel, multidimensional TCC measure, research the mechanisms by which TCC infl uences suicidality, and identify intervenable correlates of suicidality to inform community-based interventions

    Gamifying Generative AI to Facilitate Students’ Development of GenAI Fluency

    GenAI obliges educators to rethink assignments and activities. Gamification provides educators with ways to increase student engagement, supplying instructors with tools to facilitate students’ journey toward GenAI fluency. This interactive workshop explores ways to leverage the power of GenAI to engage learners in a fun and familiar way. Experience firsthand a taste of the critical thinking and problem-solving skills advanced in a GenAI role-playing game. Sample GenAI fluency in the safe learning environment that students need. Attendees will play an abridged version of The Case of the Inept AI Detective. GenAI plays a character in this game rather than it being used to develop or code the game. Through the gameplay and post-game debriefing, attendees will discover an innovative way to create games that support students’ ethical and responsible use of GenAI and promote GenAI fluency, while showcasing students’ authentic learning. Along the way participants will gain a deeper insight into GenAI literacy and how and why fluency is a step beyond literacy. Participants will discover how students’ self-reflections, coupled with applying knowledge, can lead to becoming the better strategic planners and open-minded decision-makers necessary as we move forward in a GenAI-human integrated world. Additionally, gamifying GenAI promotes 21st century skills by challenging students to think outside the GenAI box and develop ethical and equitable solutions during gameplay.
