    Leveraging College Men’s Sports Betting Experiences to Inform Responsible Gambling: A Focus Group Study

    College students are especially vulnerable to the harms associated with sports betting. Responsible Gambling (RG) strategies aim to mitigate these harms. However, research on the relevance and adoption of RG strategies among college students is limited and lacks insight from consumer experiences. The current study conducted a qualitative investigation to examine the experiences of college men who sports bet to provide guidance on how these experiences can subsequently inform RG. Three online focus groups with college men who sports bet (n = 12) were conducted using a semi-structured interview guide. Discussions were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using an open coding Thematic Analysis approach. Codes were independently identified and analyzed, resulting in 12 sub-themes that were consolidated into 5 primary themes. Themes included 1) gambling-related language, 2) motivational factors such as promotions and live games, 3) engagement through types of bets and features such as parlays, 4) emotional factors such as negative feelings from losses, and 5) social factors including betting with friends and its cultural significance. Insights from the lived experiences of participants will expand the knowledge base on sports betting among college men and guide efforts to develop more informed and consumer-driven strategies for promoting safe and responsible betting practices

    Balance, Liberty, and Law: Montesquieu’s Legacy in U.S. Constitutional Thought

    In 1787, a Constitutional Convention was convened to revise the weak Articles of Confederation. However, the delegates at this convention ended up creating an entirely new system of government—that is one with a much more powerful structure of federal power. This paper examines the influence of the French philosopher Baron de Montesquieu on this process and the creation of early U.S. political culture. While previous academic scholarship has acknowledged Montesquieu’s influence on this process of writing the Constitution, this paper seeks to explore further the specific ways his influence shows itself in the U.S. Constitution and the creation of U.S. political norms. This research examines how the work of Montesquieu’s political philosophy informed the Framers\u27 decisions in crafting the system of government in the U.S. Constitution, as well as the understanding of the Constitution. To address these questions, this study analyzes primary sources such as Montesquieu’s The Spirit of the Laws, The Federalist Papers, and the records of the Constitutional Convention. First, the historical context of the American Revolution is established, then it is shown how Montesquieu’s writings were highly regarded in the American colonies. Then, parallels of reasoning are highlighted between Montesquieu’s political writings and the arguments for ratification in the Federalist Papers. This paper shows how Montesquieu’s writings were used to determine what the U.S. government should do, how they worked to protect U.S. citizens from federal government tyranny, and how Montesquieu’s theory of proper government was suited to fit the United States’ political culture

    This poster addresses the question: How can librarians and administrators working with repository-hosted journal editors incorporate best practices into hosted journals without taking on the role of publisher and without overextending themselves? The Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing (COPE, DOAJ, OASPA, WAME, 2022) provides foundational guidance for journal publishing. The guidelines cover a robust suite of topics such as authorship, peer review, funding sources, author cost transparency, and licensing and copyright. Publishers with staff who support a suite of journals (whether 10 or 1000) may be able to evaluate and adopt such guidance relatively quickly and uniformly across their brand. However, journals hosted on repositories often operate under a more distributed system of management and without a central publisher. The relationship between libraries and journal editors reflects collaboration and service provision, rather than oversight
