Mental well-being is the very foundation for emotions, cognition and communication. Mental well-being and mental illness are correlated entities and thus mental well-being should be addressed holistically. Psychological stress, especially chronic stress, can impact one’s health and mental well-being. Dentistry in particular is often said to be highly stressful. This paper aimed to discuss the available literature on mental well-being amongst dental undergraduate students including the prevalence of depression, anxiety, stress, sources of stress, coping strategies and intervention programs. Evidence from this review showed that dental students often had high levels of stress, and also a high prevalence of depression and anxiety which contributed to lower mental well-being in this population.  The main sources of stress were mostly academic and clinical factors. Dental students had different coping mechanisms. Social support was found to be a significant factor when coping with stress. Initiatives to bring about improvement of mental well-being and to help students manage stress also showed promising results. Although many studies examined mental health among dental students, most of the studies are cross-sectional in design and were mainly focused on assessing students according to the symptoms they display, e.g. depressed or non-depressed, with very few studies giving focus on the mental well-being of the students. Very little attention was given to students who are 'well' but at risk of developing poor mental well-being. Thus, it is recommended that further research focuses on mental well-being and early intervention measures so as to prevent possible mental health deteriorations

Objective: This paper aimed to identify relevant literature about what are the factors that contributing to the re-intubation and current intervention to overcome it among critical care patients. Methods: A scoping review was carried out with the 17 articles which publish with the year 2010 to 2021. The literature search was systematically done by using PRISMA flow diagram. The quality assessment was conducted by using Effective Public Health Practice Project (EPHPP) assessment tool and the authors applied inter-rater reliability for the included articles. Results: Four themes were emerged in this scoping review. Those were the criteria for extubation, factors of extubation failure and re-intubation, medical conditions associated with re-intubation, and intervention to reduce reintubation rate among critical care patients. Conclusion: The rate of re-intubation among critical care patients can be reduced when protective measures take place properly. Those are the use of non-invasive ventilation in between successful spontaneous breathing trials and extubation, the proper usage of analgesics and sedatives during extubation and monitoring the indicators like blood urea nitrogen and central venous pressure

Introduction: Addiction to the social media could interfere with an individual’s daily life and have an impact on their psychological well-being. The emergence of social media is seen to have many influences in students’ life, and they tend to neglect their studies by spending more time on social media. Very few studies were conducted regard to social media and mental health in Malaysia. Aim: To study the association between social media addiction and mental health among nursing students. Material and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 208 undergraduate nursing students, IIUM Kuantan. A questionnaire consists of four sections; socio-demographic data, social media usage, social media addiction, and mental health were distributed. The data were analysed by using IBM Statistical Package Social Science (SPSS) version 22.0. Results: It is found that most of nursing students, 54.3% (N=113) are slightly addicted to social media, 37.0% (N=77) of them are moderately addicted, 5.3% (N=11) are highly addicted and 3.4% (N=7) have no addiction to social media. On average, the students experienced moderately severe depression and anxiety with the same mean score for each with 28.99 (9.637). They also had mild stress with mean score of 8.47 (5.436). It is found that there is an association between social media addiction with depression (r = 0.448, p<0.05), anxiety (r = 0.448, p<0.05) and stress (r = 0.313, p<0.05) respectively. For sociodemographic, there is no relationship between age, gender, level of study and CGPA. Conclusion: It was found that there is an association between social media addiction and mental health status. Social media can have a negative impact on mental health among the students. These findings seek for initiation of interventions for better social media management and mental health improvement. It could serve as a reference for future researchers to conduct their studies in the related area

LETTER TO EDITOR Challenges for Education in Nursing Nursing challenges have evolved over time, but the profession itself remains true to those who are motivated to serve others. Nurses are responsible for more than just patient care; they are also responsible for the promotion of health care and personal well-being. Nursing education, the role in community care, the development of areas of specialisation, and nursing leadership all require periodic transformation in line with rapid technological change, the world's growing elderly population, and the current twists and challenges in providing the best possible care.   Nurses have an impact on people of all ages, ethnic groups, backgrounds, and communities while working tirelessly to meet the sick and vulnerable's physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. Nursing is a profession that requires someone who is resilient, dedicated, and empathetic in order to provide care to the community. According to WHO recommendations, nursing education should be standardised around the world, with minimum qualifications at Bachelor’s degree.   Advanced degree programmes, such as a have expanded the offerings and reach of modern-day nurses, providing them with the skills needed to meet evolving nursing challenges. Nurses must brace themselves for upcoming challenges, which may worsen as the world's population grows. As a result, the specialisation curriculum should include more areas involving clinical experience for various specialties and treatment of acute and chronic diseases, and public health. This is exacerbated by an increase in the number of patients with a wide range of problems and symptoms that necessitate the specialisation of advanced clinical skills, the complexity of work, and the dedication to patient care. In the face of various challenges, a lack of nursing expertise will limit treatment to patients and even weaken treatment care. Nurses with specialisations in developing countries have been able to provide the best possible care to patients with a high rate of success. However, in order to be a successful nurse, each nurse must have certain strengths, interests, and expertise   In order to prepare for becoming a developed country and facing future challenges, such nursing strategies and directions must be prepared in accordance with WHO recommendations. Today, nursing is a vast and varied field with a plethora of opportunities for those interested in pursuing it as a career. Nursing challenges are unique due to the level of investment nurses have in their work. They get to know their patients, are concerned about their needs, and contribute significantly to their patients' recovery. Despite the daily challenges of nursing, they make a difference in the lives of the many people they touch. Reference

    Get PDF
Background: Lack of knowledge and understanding of standard precautions, and insufficient compliance with the established guidelines in nursing students will increase the risk of exposure to healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). This study aims to determine knowledge and compliance of standard precautions among the undergraduate nursing students and to identify the associated factors. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among the undergraduate nursing students from a Malaysian public university in Pahang. A convenience sampling was used to select the participants. The participants were asked to complete an online survey consisting of questionnaire of knowledge and compliance of standard precautions. Results: A total of 178 undergraduate nursing students completed the questionnaires (response rate = 95%). Their mean age was 22.7 years old (SD = 1.1). The score of standard precautions knowledge was 90.9% (mean score = 16.4/18, SD = 1.5) and the score of compliance was 91.8% (mean score = 73.4/80, SD = 10.7). There were significant associations between age (p = 0.002), year of study (p = 0.032) and clinical posting experience (p = 0.010) with knowledge of standard precautions. Whilst only age (p = 0.011) was significantly associated with compliance of standard precautions. There was a significant positive association between knowledge and compliance of standard precautions (rs = 0.187, p = 0.012). Conclusion: Knowledge and compliance of standard precaution among the undergraduate nursing students were high and achieved the expected requirement for clinical posting. A continuous effort to improve adherence to standard precautions in nursing students is necessary to protect and prevent them from getting infected particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

    Get PDF
Background: Clinical learning environment (CLE) is an environment in which any person who could influence the care of a patient learns. The CLE affects the effectiveness of clinical practicum that is a significant part of the nursing curriculum. However, there are limited studies that focus on the CLE of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Objectives: To assess the nursing students’ perception of the clinical learning environment of ICU, and to determine the associated socio-demographic characteristic with the clinical learning environment of ICU. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted via purposive sampling at Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM Kuantan. The Adopted Students Evaluation of Clinical Education Environment (SECEE) version 3 questionnaire was used to assess the students’ perception of CLE of ICU within three subscales (instructor facilitation of learning (IFL), preceptor/staff nurse facilitation of learning (PFL) and learning opportunities (LO)). Results: A total of 141 nursing students participated in this study. Based on the mean score, the students have a positive perception of the CLE of ICU (79.41%). The subscale IFL was the most positively perceived (84.44%) followed by subscale LO (77.49%) and subscale PFL (75.64%). There was a significant difference seen for subscale LO between gender (p-value=0.008), male students gave a higher score compared to the female student. A significant mean difference was also found for subscale IFL between years of study (p-value=0.002), suggesting that the senior student had a more positive score compared to their junior. No association was found between students’ age and duration of clinical practicum in ICU with the CLE score. Conclusion: The nursing students’ perception of the CLE of ICU is positive. However, the score for subscale PFL is the lowest compared to another subscale. Hence, the nursing faculty should work together with the ward management to enhance the role and engagement of staff nurses in students learning. By doing this, the CLE of ICU will get better and eventually improve the clinical learning outcome.
