Constructing Islamic Secondary School Curricula and Textbooks for Natural Science: An Integration Framework Based on the Ūlū Al-Albāb Model
Abstract: The annals of the Islamic, modern and post-modern eras are witnesses to how science and technology have impacted humanity. Reacting against the inauspicious effects of modern and post-modern tendencies, is the distinct global phenomenon of Islamic schools offering “integrated education”. But what constitutes as integration? Analyses of various curricula, syllabi and textbooks of natural science used by several Islamic secondary schools in Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore, Southern Thailand, Mindanao and Ontario show very little integration if any. This article puts forward an integration framework towards the construction of Islamic secondary school curricula and textbooks of natural science, based on the Qur’ānic notion of “ūlū al-albāb” with Ghazālian discourse of the qalb where certain conventional aspects of natural science undergo holistic reposition, reinterpretation and reorientation from the Qur’ānic worldview. The framework is constructed on the three-level relationships man has – with God, with humanity and with the cosmos
Rationalism and Criticism in The Qurʾān: An Analytical Study from Modern Books of Tafsīr
Abstract: The paper attempts to reveal the significance on the use of intellect and criticism in Muslim theology to prove validity of the revelation particularly which is related to the truth and justice. This could be conducted by exploring the views of mufassirin and contemporary Muslim scholars in giving the exposition toward the Qurʾanic verses focusing on the prohibition of blind fanaticism. The emphasis is closely linked with Muslim activities with an attempt of achieving the progress in their lives. We found that creative thinking and the use of intellect is inseparable from the concept of reading as reflected within the first revelation given to the Prophet (PBUH). It is not simply to read the text rather it deals with rationality to confirm with the concept of the truth which may come from human thought. Hence, the revelation appeals to its adherents to observe the use of rationalism and criticism to confirm the validity of certain thought
Beliefs about Prophet Isa in Islam: A Critical Refutation of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad’s Claims in Light of the Qurʾān and Sunnah
Abstract: This paper looks into some of the claims made by Mirza Ghulam Ahmad Qadiyani against the Prophet Isa (AS). Mirza’s claims were not only discourteous to Isa (AS), but were also not in line with the fundamental beliefs propagated by Islam. The Qurʾān and Sunnah has emphasized Isa’s Prophethood, his reverence, his miracles, his ascending and his descending as the promised messiah. The mainstream Sunnī School namely the Ahl Sunnah wa al-Jamaʿah base their position on these deliberations. Early tafsīr works such as Ibn Jarir al-Tabari’s Tafsir al-Tabari, al-Nasafi’s Madārik al-Tanzīl wa Ḥaqāʾiq al-Taʾwīl, and major hadith sources are referred to in exposing the mainstream position of Islam and concomitantly refuting Mirza’s claims
