The Impact of Helium Exposure on the PMTs of the SuperNEMO Experiment
International audienceThe performance of Hamamatsu 8" photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) of the type used in the SuperNEMO neutrinoless double-beta decay experiment (R5912-MOD), is investigated as a function of exposure to helium (He) gas. Two PMTs were monitored for over a year, one exposed to varying concentrations of He, and the other kept in standard atmospheric conditions as a control. Both PMTs were exposed to light signals generated by a Bi-207 radioactive source that provided consistent large input PMT signals similar to those that are typical of the SuperNEMO experiment. The energy resolution of PMT signals corresponding to 1 MeV energy scale determined from the Bi-207 decay spectrum, shows a negligible degradation with He exposure; however the rate of after-pulsing shows a clear increase with He exposure, which is modelled and compared to diffusion theory. A method for reconstructing the partial pressure of He within the PMT and a method for determining the He breakdown point, are introduced. The implications for long-term SuperNEMO operations are briefly discussed
International audienceIntroduction: National and international recommendations call for an annual standardized systematic holistic review in the management of chronic inflammatory rheumatism (CIR). This includes an assessment of disease activity and severity, as well as patient education on the disease, knowledge of pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments, adherence to treatment and screening for comorbidities. Our study aims to recall the definition of a holistic review (HR), to present the evidence of their effectiveness and to give an overview of HR practices in France. Methods: A literature review was conducted in the Pubmed database to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) or meta-analyses reporting the efficacy of a multidisciplinary intervention in ICR or other chronic diseases. Two online surveys were sent to all rheumatology departments in France and to a sample of independent rheumatologists, with 34 and 19 questions respectively. These questionnaires were used to determine the profile of the responding center/rheumatologist, the existence of an HR and the obstacles or facilitators to its implementation. Results: Literature search yielded 872 articles, 24 of which were finally included: 16 RCTs and 8 meta-analyses. Only 3 articles concerned ICRs, including one meta-analysis of 10 RCTs in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Of these 3 studies, 2 RCTs in systemic lupus and systemic sclerosis showed a favorable impact of a multidisciplinary approach on SLEDAI and grip strength and mouth opening respectively, while the meta-analysis in RA showed no benefit on disability or disease activity. The questionnaire was answered by 72 centers and 186 rheumatologists. A third of the centers had already implemented a HR during a day hospitalization. Seventy percent of centers estimated that they managed more than 10 patients per month, devoting an average of 35 minutes of rheumatologist time and 90 minutes of cumulative time for all other healthcare professionals (HCPs) involved in the program. Most of the HCPs involved were nurses (92%), dieticians (56%) and physiotherapists (56%). The main obstacles to setting up a HR were the lack of paramedical resources, lack of economic value and lack of support from treating rheumatologists, while patient motivation was seen as a facilitating factor. Conclusion: Although HR is recommended, there is little evidence of its effectiveness in ICR. Only 36% of responding centers have implemented such a program. This survey helps to identify the obstacles and facilitators, and to find solutions for extending this practice.
41 pages, 25 figuresWe consider a combinatorial reconfiguration problem on a subclass of quadrangulations of surfaces called square-tiled surfaces. Our elementary move is a shear in a cylinder that corresponds to a well-chosen sequence of diagonal flips that preserves the square-tiled properties. We conjecture that the connected components of this reconfiguration problem are in bijection with the connected components of the moduli space of quadratic differentials. We prove that the conjecture holds in the so-called hyperelliptic components of Abelian square-tiled surfaces. More precisely, we show that any two such square-tiled surfaces of genus can be connected by powers of cylinder shears
Bifunctional chimeras of myeloperoxidase and glucose oxidase. Antimicrobial, topological and enzymatic properties
International audienceEnhancing the local substrate concentration is a crucial strategy in nature for facilitating the proximity of two enzymes. The substrate of the first enzyme is transformed into a by-product that travels to the active site of the second enzyme without external diffusion, then transformed into a product and eventually expelled from the complex. In an effort to optimize the antimicrobial properties of myeloperoxidase from Rhodopirellula baltica (RbMPO), we created a library of fused chimeras between a glucose oxidase (GOx) and RbMPO so that H 2 O 2 could be continuously perfused in the vicinity RbMPO, enabling the production of HOCl or HOSCN, well-known antimicrobial agents. The enzymes were characterized biochemically, enzymatically, and physically using lowresolution techniques such as AFM, SAXS, and cryofracture. SAXS experiments revealed that the chimeras were properly folded and existed in different oligomeric states. The kinetic parameters of the chimeras were determined and used for classification, revealing that all chimeras exhibited varying levels of activity and were microbicidal. The mixture of different oligomeric states of LEGGEAEA displayed both activity and microbicidal properties. AFM was used to visualize the chimeras in different oligomeric states, with their overall shapes ranging from round, oblong, to hooked, depending on the linker used
National audienceWith mechanized farming in sudanian climate terroirs (maize, cotton), legumes associated with hardy cereals have both declined. Taking the case of south-west Burkina Faso (social transect of 8 villages, 3 lowlands), on the basis of recent detailed data at individual and farm level, the paper explores the status of legumes, variations and drivers. In fields on dry soils, legumes are still grown in pure stand or in associations, but have fallen since the 1970s, especially in "bush fields". Even cash cropping of groundnuts has given way to cotton. Small non-cotton farms and women still rely on legumes. Large farms have limited them to their food needs, but are testing soybeans, in association or rotation with cotton and maize.
3D luminescent waveguides micromachining by femtosecond laser inscription in niobium germanate glass
International audienceThree-dimensional (3D) microstructures were written by femtosecond (fs) laser aiming to manufacture waveguides inside niobium germanate glasses. The laser-induced damage threshold using 1030 nm fs-laser irradiation was investigated, and the waveguides were written in different fluences. The morphology, structural information and refractive index changes of microstructures were discussed. The waveguide cross-section microscopy data shows an elliptical shape with a diameter varying with the applied pulse energy. The micro-Raman maps demonstrate the occurrence of structural modifications with different microregions along the laser propagation direction. The refractive index profiles point to the formation of at least one microregion containing a positive refractive index change along the laser propagation. Guided light transmission measurements demonstrate the formation of single-mode waveguides inscribed at low pulse energy (up to 132 nJ) and an emitting waveguide in the rare-earth-doped sample. The visible luminescent response of erbium ions in the waveguide output was demonstrated and supports the possibility of using these core waveguides for future 3D multi-functional photonic devices operating in the visible region
Sparse inference in Poisson Log-Normal model by approximating the L0-norm
International audienceVariable selection methods are required in practical statistical modeling, to identify and include only the most relevant predictors, and then improving model interpretability. Such variable selection methods are typically employed in regression models, for instance in this article for the Poisson Log Normal model (PLN, Chiquet et al., 2021). This model aim to explain multivariate count data using dependent variables, and its utility was demonstrating in scientific fields such as ecology and agronomy. In the case of the PLN model, most recent papers focus on sparse networks inference through combination of the likelihood with a L1 -penalty on the precision matrix. In this paper, we propose to rely on a recent penalization method (SIC, O'Neill and Burke, 2023), which consists in smoothly approximating the L0-penalty, and that avoids the calibration of a tuning parameter with a cross-validation procedure. Moreover, this work focuses on the coefficient matrix of the PLN model and establishes an inference procedure ensuring effective variable selection performance, so that the resulting fitted model explaining multivariate count data using only relevant explanatory variables. Our proposal involves implementing a procedure that integrates the SIC penalization algorithm (epsilon-telescoping) and the PLN model fitting algorithm (a variational EM algorithm). To support our proposal, we provide theoretical results and insights about the penalization method, and we perform simulation studies to assess the method, which is also applied on real datasets
