International audienceArt projects help to revitalise peripheral areas and create new local resources that address a number of socio-environmental issues. Drawing on a dedicated database, this article identifies 226 artistic sites located in peripheral areas (mainly in Europe and North America), selected for the site-specific practices developed by their 2,016 associated artists. A total of 2,646 original site-specific works/projects were referenced from a sample of approximately one-third of the artistic venues. This sample includes 65 entries, covering 80% of the artists in the dataset, or 1,645 individuals. A field survey was conducted in 25 of these venues.Several statistical methods, including network analysis, were used to examine the artistic circulations and transnational networks involved in the artistic development of these peripheral spaces. The results reveal a wide variety of artistic circulations, encompassing both renowned artists with international reach and those whose activities remain locally grounded. The presence of prominent figures in site-specificity art –invited by diverse artistic organisations– also contributes to the creation of transnational networks. These networks are a factor of extroversion for certain neglected territories, which strategically leverage them to improve their image and visibility. This raises important questions about of the territorial balance between artistic distinction through branding and the integration of local logics specific to artistic venues. The extroversion of peripheral spaces can therefore come at the expense of their territorial specificities and the originality of the artistic work produced there.

    No full text
International audienceFrom the speakers’ point of view, the formal proximity between stems of different lexemes facilitates the morphological pairing of these lexemes: It is easier for two lexemes to be identified as related when they share the same stem than when their stems are different. However, the formal distance between stems is not the only criterion. At least two other criteria may apply, even in cases where the distance between stems is at its maximum: The frequency in the lexicon of the formal alternation observed between the stems of these lexemes, and the frequency of these stems within the same morphological family.

Since the early 2000s, the concept of the Anthropocene as a new geological epoch dominated by human activities has been the subject of increasing debate in academic circles and beyond, particularly online. In what context has this notion emerged? Who is using it? What is the debate about? And how can the Web help us to shed light on the subject? This thesis proposes a controversy mapping on the Anthropocene debate through the prism of the English-speaking Web, for the period from 2000 to 2024. More specifically, it focuses on the online controversies surrounding the Anthropocene Working Group's (AWG) project for official recognition of the Anthropocene within the geological time scale. Theoretically and methodologically, it draws on the principles of Bruno Latour's controversy mapping as both a qualitative and quantitative study of a complex subject, but also on novel web crawling technologies developed within the framework of the “digital studies” axis of Bordeaux Montaigne University (UR 4426 MICA, E3D).The central ambition of this thesis is to determine the extent to which controversies about the Anthropocene are, or are not, shaping new relationships between the natural and social sciences, in the light of online traces on the subject. It is divided into five parts. The first establishes the need for an interdisciplinary dialogue combining the study of science, web analysis and ecological issues, to map these controversies. The second traces the evolution of definitions of the Anthropocene, between 2000 and 2009, based on the AWG's online bibliography. The third part proposes to use a combination of novel numerical methods to identify the main debates in scientific literature and on the Web on this subject. The fourth section analyzes the online debates surrounding the AWG between 2009 and 2024, as an attempt to redistribute the relationship between the natural and social sciences, the effects of which continue to be felt today. The final section sets out the main findings and possible extensions of this research. In short, the thesis aims to contribute to the study of the relationship between science, technology and society (STS) in this new planetary context.

As the water flows: A method for assessing river navigability in the past

    No full text
International audienceAlthough textual and archaeological sources inform us about the importance of river transport in Protohistory, Antiquity, and the Middle Ages, integrating it into studies of ancient mobility remains a challenge. Empirical navigability studies are time-consuming and are only feasible for rivers well-documented by historical, archaeological, and palaeogeographical studies. This work proposes a method for realistically approximating navigable sections without empirical data by algorithmically detecting the plain sections of a river and testing its reliability as an indicator of navigability. Using 18 rivers in central-eastern Gaul, for which we have empirical knowledge of ancient navigable sections, we demonstrate that estimating the plain section of the river based on a change-point detection algorithm provides a good approximation of navigable sections. This method is applied to 48 Roman rivers where empirical information about navigable sections is scattered. A subset of these rivers is then empirically tested to validate the results obtained.Applying this method offers a new perspective on navigable areas in the Roman world, providing a reasonable first guess that could guide future empirical research into the navigability of ancient rivers

Rendered crossings and the shaping of a culture: The influence of mid-twentieth-century Californian surf travel to Mexico

    No full text
International audienceThis article sets out to explore the early history and important cultural legacy of surf travel from the United States into Mexico in the twentieth century. The work is part of an emerging analysis not only of the principal early actors of cross-border surf travel but also of their documentary work in film media and the role of Mexican travel in the development of regional surf culture, notably in the mid-century period. Addressed are the mechanisms at work in early surf travel photography: the initial selection of sites and objects of focus, the repetition of photographic subjects and, perhaps most importantly, the subsequent iconization of certain themes, artefacts, and rites. In short, the article reveals how documented surf-specific trips to impacted the nascent California surf culture. Far from minor in this context, crossing the border into Mexico played a major role in its development, providing substance elements to surfing’s increasingly rich cultural fabric, complexifying surfing history and perceived culture beyond a linear Hawaii-California model. It also serves to complexify surfing’s history and culture beyond a linear Hawaii–California model
