Re-sounding Shōwa: Ōtaki Eiichi’s A Long Vacation and nostalgia for 1980s Japan
No full textColloque "Le Japon sonore : modernité, constructions sociales, rapports de force / Japan and sound: modernity, social constructs and power relations" 14-16 novembre 2024A prolific singer-songwriter and pop music producer throughout his life, Ōtaki Eiichi (1948-2013) has turned into a symbol of the late Shōwa era some ten years after his death. His bestselling A Long Vacation was one of the first Japanese albums released on compact disc and embodies significant changes in the music diffusion and listening practices of the early 1980s. Originally a creative engagement with Phil Spector’s wall of sound concept and the Japanese reception of American pop in the 1950s and 1960s, the album has since been re-issued several times and is now commonly associated with the sound of “City Pop,” a sonic representation of the supposed wealth and optimism of pre-bubble Japan. A Long Vacation has thus come to represent both the nostalgic perception of past sound and its potential for creative refiguration. In discussing the development of the multi-layered discourse surrounding the album, my paper aims to shed some light on recent sound-related shifts in retrospective views of the Shōwa era

Stress, anxiété, burnout scolaire : comment vont les adolescents français ?
No full textInternational audienceCette recherche a permis d'appréhender les symptômes de burnout scolaire, de stress scolaire et de refus scolaire anxieux dans une perspective développementale comparative de 493 adolescents français scolarisés. Un questionnaire en ligne a été élaboré et diffusé auprès de collégiens et de lycéens. Les résultats montrent un très fort pourcentage d'adolescents en souffrance. Les jeunes les plus impactés sont les lycéens, et plus particulièrement les élèves de Terminale et de 2 nde avec près des trois-quarts d'entre eux en burnout scolaire et/ou présentant un stress scolaire fort. Ces résultats alarmants corroborent malheureusement ceux de nombreuses recherches internationales
Evidence for discrete ochre exploitation 35,000 years ago in West Africa
No full textInternational audienceDespite new impetus for Late Pleistocene research in West Africa, little is known about the range of Middle Stone Age behaviours in this region. Yet, the multiplicity of Middle Stone Age lithic technologies testifies to significant behavioural and demographic dynamics, marked by innovation and adaptability. Here, we present the first indepth analysis of ochre remains in West Africa. New data from Toumboura III site, eastern Senegal, dated between 40 ± 3 and 30 ± 3 ka, point towards the use of ochre pieces as part of an occasional and specialized ochre crushing activity, probably dedicated to the production of powders, as well as the use of ochre sticks. Ochre pieces were studied at both macro and microscopic levels and while some of this iron-rich material likely accumulated in the deposits without anthropogenic intervention, another significant set of ochre pieces was found that was likely processed in situ. The impact scars on the pieces are not as striking as grinding traces for evidencing human exploitation. Nonetheless, they cannot be explained by natural phenomena. These remains could represent the earliest known evidence of ochre exploitation in Senegal. They potentially open new perspectives on symbolic behaviours in the Middle Stone Age of West Africa. They show that the full range of human behaviours in this region is yet far from being captured

No full textInternational audienceAlthough Virginia Woolf is well known as a novelist, essayist and editor, her career as a journalist has been overshadowed in most biographies and studies of her. Yet journalism played a crucial role in her literary career and, as a school of writing, helped to shape her style and approach to certain themes that she would later develop in her works. It's a profession she discovered at a very young age. At the age of 9 she founded and edited the family newspaper, the Hyde Park Gate News. In 1904, at the age of 22, she began her career as a freelance literary journalist. Her first article was a feature on the Brönte sisters for The Guardian. Journalism gave her the emancipation she had always dreamed of, giving her independence, 'a room of her own'. She became a journalist long before she published her first novel, The Crossing of Appearances (1915). Virginia Woolf published numerous articles in a wide range of media, both in England and the United States.Présentation de la production journalistique de la romancière britannique.
