Does Customers’ PriorProduct Knowledge Affect Perceived Sellers’ Connection to their Bundle of Needs, Goals, and Preferences?

    No full text
International audienceWe examine whether clients with various levels of product knowledge differ in their post-purchase assessment of the salespersons they negotiated with in consideration of their bundle ofneeds, goals, and preferences. The results of our research, which involved distributing aquestionnaire to 120 respondents, show that the more consumers know about the products priorto buying, the more likely they perceive that the sellers had cared for their bundle, as reported inpost-purchase assessments. This means that there may be an inherent bias in satisfaction surveys:more knowledgeable customers tend to have a more positive view of the sellers. This may applyto many other economic businesses where consumers fear that hidden agendas loom behind theirefforts, even when well intentioned, such as the real estate industry (existing homes), wherecustomers’ post-experience surveys are routinely used.

From Groups to Communities: A Resource Mobilization Theory Perspective on the Emergence of Communities

    No full text
International audienceAbstract Groups and communities have been key topics in the information systems (IS) research agenda. While communities are assumed to emerge at the intersection of overlapping groups and their practices, prior research has mainly focused on their dynamics and evolution. This has resulted to limited empirical support regarding the emergence of communities. We address that lacuna by tracing the emergence of communities through the prism of resource mobilization theory. In doing so, we make use of a unique longitudinal dataset and incorporate Topic Modelling, Bipartite Network Analysis, and Community Detection. We show that new communities are formed at the intersection of overlapping groups and practices. In addition, we contribute to the IS literature by demonstrating that their emergence occurs due to resource mobilization that gives rise to a shared mindset. We also reveal that multiple resources are incorporated into the practices of an emerging community. By combining large datasets and innovative computational approaches, we help IS theory and practice to move away from traditional "what" questions towards the more insightful "how" ones. We discuss the theoretical and practical implications of our work and delineate an agenda for future research on the topic

Nash equilibrium in emerging partnership-based Islamic banking industry with a Bayesian game-theoretic approach

    No full text
International audiencePurpose A hypothesis developed in this paper models the relationship between the borrower and the bank as a dynamic game based on incomplete information (business game) and seeks an equilibrium point at which the facilitated applicant can act according to the terms of the loan agreement once the contract is signed and meet the requirements of the contract. Design/methodology/approach The primary assumption in the formation of the Islamic bank in Islamic society is that the members of the society are Muslims and act according to religious orders. However, the non-fulfillment of divine principles and orders is always possible. In partnership agreements, the risk of infringement is reduced and corrupt contracts are prevented in some circumstances. Our basic model was constructed using the Beer-Quiche classic game, which has been modified dynamically along with a generalization of complexity terms. The information asymmetry led us to use a heterogeneous belief system to evaluate the probability of the customer transmitting a low credit risk signal to the bank and the probability of the customer transmitting a high credit risk signal to the bank. There are several assumptions of the basic model that are released in the extended model by the presence of a social inspector, by exploring credit risk signals in the generalized model and by considering various commitment levels in the comprehensive model. Findings As a result, it is observed that there is no Nash equilibrium in cases where the customer applies separation strategies. But if the pulling strategies are applied, the Nash equilibrium can be achieved under certain conditions, including inspection bodies in the banking system, the creation of necessary transparency and the proper treatment of criminals by government and regulatory bodies. So, by using alternative belief systems, applying different filters and paying attention to all sectors of the economy, new Nash equilibrium points can be achieved. Moreover, multi-stage facilities payment reduces the risk of corrupt contracts. Originality/value This paper sets out to analyze Nash Equilibrium and its possible encounter in Islamic Banking for the first time, utilizing a Bayesian Game-Theoretic framework. A major aspect of the research is the contribution to a better understanding of the role of transparency and government oversight in the implementation of Islamic banking regulatory standards

Spillovers and connectedness among BRICS stock markets, cryptocurrencies, and uncertainty: Evidence from the quantile vector autoregression network

    No full text
International audienceIn this study we advance the understanding of the spillovers and connectedness network among conventional and Islamic BRICS stock markets, cryptos (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin) and various global uncertainties, using a quantile vector autoregression method and daily data covering the period October 8, 2016, to May 28, 2021. Further, the study uses a network and sensitivity analyses to assess the nexus, examines risk causes, and the transfer paths in these markets under bearish, normal, and bullish markets. The evidence offers major findings. First, the overall static and dynamic connectedness is very high and more intense at extreme events. Second, the network connectedness structure shows that the markets have played both roles: net transmitters and receivers of shocks under several market states. Finally, the sensitivity to quantiles analysis shows switching behavior of net transfer spillovers over the quantiles. This could be beneficial to investors aiming at optimizing hedging strategies. Policymakers should consider carefully the overall network connectedness in the market system and formulate appropriate policies to conceive stock market price sensitivity

Entrepreneurial contributions to sustainability transitions—A longitudinal study of their representation and enactment through topic modeling and thematic analysis

    No full text
International audienceEntrepreneurs discover opportunities, start new ventures, and are widely considered the forerunners of sustainability transitions. As they address existing market failures and realize entrepreneurial opportunities to preserve nature, life, support, and community, they contribute to sustainable development. However, linking individual entrepreneurial contributions to transitions is difficult. Initially, new ventures lack the leverage to influence broad-scale transitions. For this reason, it is necessary to not only look at individual entrepreneurial contributions to sustainability transitions but rather to investigate them at a broader scale. This article turns to social representations theory to argue how the social representation of micro-level entrepreneurial actions in news media contributes to meso- or macro-level sustainability transitions. Taking this theory lens, we draw on a novel combination of topic modeling and thematic analysis in order to analyze 1167 newspaper articles from 2010 to 2020 on sustainable entrepreneurship with a tie to the Berlin entrepreneurial ecosystem. Our findings highlight the media's role in making entrepreneurial action for sustainability transitions relatable by referencing events like award ceremonies and trade fairs. We find that entrepreneurial contributions are linked to specific discourses ranging from globalization strategies to a TV series' on banking. Also, we identify particular entrepreneurial contributions in Berlin such as local empowerment and challenging agricultural and fashion industries, and suggest a comprehensive approach to investigate impact aggregated within ecosystems. Our social identity conceptualization of sustainable entrepreneurs as localists, researchers, advocates, challengers, and change-makers, can support their strategic communication, benchmarking and impact-oriented decision-making

Digging deep or scratching the surface? Contingent innovation outcomes of seeking advice from geographically distant ties

    No full text
International audienceAdvice-seeking is an essential, daily R&D task. Therefore, the configuration of advice ties around a focal R&D worker likely determines their individual performance. Among the network dimensions considered in prior research, the geographical distance between advice providers and a focal advice seeker rarely has been investigated, despite widespread recognition that geography strongly affects knowledge circulation. To capture the effects of geographical distance on advice-seeking success, the current study takes a mixed method approach and investigate R&D engineers in a French cluster related to the semiconductor industry. By analyzing the lived experience of 17 R&D workers, as recounted in in-depth interviews, we draw a conceptual distinction between surface and deep advice-seeking (study 1). These types differ in terms of their temporality, form of reciprocity and expected contribution. Consistent with this dual conceptualization and previous literature on the geography of knowledge, we predict that distant ties in the context of deep advice-seeking are beneficial to the innovation performance of R&D workers, but detrimental in the context of surface advice-seeking. A test of these hypotheses, involving 113 R&D workers, provides support for the proposed model (study 2). All in all, the paper sheds new light on geography and location as essential factors of innovation

Synchronised Shared Memory and Model Checking

    No full text
International audienceIn this paper, a formal generic framework for defining and reasoning about deterministic concurrency in synchronous systems is implemented in the Spin model checker. Concretely, the paper implements the clock-synchronised shared memory ( csm ) theory , which extends synchronous programming with more and higher level csm data types. These csm data types are equipped with a synchronisation policy prescribing how concurrent calls to objects methods must be organised. In a policy constructive system, all methods of every object can be scheduled in a policy-conformant manner without deadlocking. In our framework, synchronous policies get codified as Promela never-claims. In this form, the model checker can search for executions (interleavings) that satisfy the synchronous product of all the never-claims, namely policy-conformant schedules for all the csm objects. The existence of such a policy-conformant schedules, verifies that the concurrent synchronous system is deterministic. The approach of this paper extends beyond a single semantics since it can handle the synchronous programming model as well as the various forms of the sequentially constructive model found in the literature

Supply chain pressures and SMEs’ CSR practices: the moderation effect of supply chain position

    No full text
International audienceDrawing from institutional and resource dependence theories, this paper investigates how supply chain pressures influence the various dimensions of CSR, i.e. environmental practices, human resources practices, community involvement practices, and marketplace practices, in SMEs. Using a structural equation modelling approach and data collected from 273 SMEs, our findings indicate that institutional pressures exerted by supply chain partners differently influence the level of CSR practices in SMEs. Notably, the study demonstrates that coercive pressures have no significant influence on CSR practices, whereas mimetic and normative pressures positively and significantly influence the level of CSR practices. Furthermore, the positive influence of normative pressures on CSR practices is stronger for SMEs situated downstream in their supply chains, whereas SMEs in further upstream positions are sensitive to mimetic pressures for their environmental, workplace and marketplace practices. Overall, this study provides unique insight on the association between supply chain pressures and CSR practices in SMEs
