Opening the Black Box: Measuring the Performance of Research Organization

    No full text
International audienceThis article investigates the determinants of research organizations’ performance. A theoretical construct is built based on the traditional “environment–conduct–performance” framework applied to industrial organizations and operationalized by using information from a recent extensive survey of research organizations. From an empirical point of view, using hierarchical clustering techniques, we first underline the diversity of research organizations in terms of structure and conduct parameters (in order to better identify their “behavioral patterns”) and then investigate the link between these classifications and institute performance by means of binomial regression models. From a managerial point of view, this research could help to formulate policy and management recommendations for improving performance. This article addresses two critical issues: 1) Performance measurement of research organizations remains a challenge despite multiple efforts made by academics, research organizations, management, and policymakers. The broad range of impacts resulting from research institutes can be tacit or codified, direct or indirect, among other characteristics. In many cases, these impacts are related to humans, which makes them a) difficult to measure as such, and b) involves challenges in terms of the causalities of impacts. 2) The determinants of research organization performance remain a partial black box

Making technological innovation greener: Does firm digital transformation work?

    No full text
International audienceAlthough firms' digital transformation (FDT) and green technological innovation (GTI) are both critical for firm development, we still know little about the precise effects between the two or their influence mechanisms. Combining diffusion of innovation (DOI) theory and the technology–organization–environment (TOE) framework, this study analyzes a sample of listed non-financial Chinese firms from 2010 to 2021 using a fixed-effect and mediating effect model to reveal FDT's effect on GTI and its mechanism. Our findings show that (1) FDT can promote both GTI quantity and quality, but it is more significant for GTI quantity; (2) the positive effects can be obtained by reducing firm risk-taking and increasing R&D intensity; and (3) the role of FDT in promoting GTI is particularly significant in firms in the Midwest region, state-owned enterprises, and firms in high-tech sectors, but has negligible effect on high-polluting firms. Our conclusions remain robust after applying the Poisson model, excluding the effects of COVID-19, adopting the generalized method of moments instrumental variable regression, and using Sobel tests. The findings contribute to the literature by combining DOI and TOE into the same framework and empirically analyzing how FDT can influence GTI

Market orientation, restructuring and collaboration: The impact of digital design on organizational competitiveness

    No full text
International audienceDesign is commonly understood as a key element of products, contributing to their distinctiveness, usability and aesthetics. The success of a product is increasingly related to the user experience or the aesthetics of the user interface, meaning that design is increasingly important in the digital environment. The shift in competitive focus to the customer induced by digital design encourages companies to innovate and can also lead to changes in internal operations, market orientation and the reconfiguration of external collaboration procedures. This dimension of digital design-induced effects has to date seen very little research. The objective of this study is to investigate how digital design-induced changes in market orientation, internal restructuring and external cooperation affect firms' competitive orientation. The simultaneous equation framework was applied to a survey of 515 user interface and experience designers from France. Our results suggest that market orientation is not the only channel through which digital design influences firm competitiveness. Digital design leads to organizational change and the reconfiguration of external relationships that directly and indirectly help companies build competitive advantages and increase customer satisfaction

The impact of fintechs on the bank spread

International audienceThis article analyzed the impact of fintechs on the Brazilian financial industry. We focus on the Market Share indicators of the main institutions from Brazilian bank system. Moreover, we observe if it is enough to trigger a decline in Brazilian bank spread. Using data provided by IF.Data system from Central Bank of Brazil, quarterly financial data of all Brazilian financial institutions from 2010 to 2018 were collected. It resulted in a database of about 57,000 observations. The empirical outcomes indicated that, despite the insertion of new competitors, the concentration of credit and investment in the six largest Brazilian banks remains above 80% without loss of spread in the period observed
