“New Woman†in Rabindranath Tagore’s Short Stories: An Interrogation of “Laboratoryâ€
No full textThis article investigates Rabindranath Tagore's perspectives on women as seen through his short stories. While his poems primarily describe beauty, nature and his search for what is beyond mundane life, his short stories deal with the lives of ordinary people. Women's struggles and sufferings are particularly highlighted. This article argues that while on one hand Tagore reveals the unequal social structure that oppresses women, on another, he creates courageous women who challenge tradition. His short story “Laboratory,†written a few months before his death, expresses his latest views on women and gives shape to the “new woman,†whom he perceives as arriving in India in the near future. In so doing, Tagore urges women to find an identity of their own, and realise that wifehood and motherhood are but fractions of their whole being

At the same time, its underlying exploration of death undermines the simple idea that it is merely a work about the need to give up private forms of therapy and to engage in public acts of commitment. Rather, it is a transitionary work in Murakami's continued effort to seek both public expressions of commitment and a personal reconciliation with the finality of death

Get PDFThis paper aims to provide a comprehensive analytic perspective on Rabindranath Tagore as a thinker, taking on board his views on metaphysics and mysticism, as well as on more down-to-earth matters such as political theory and gender relations. Starting with Tagore’s well-known debate with Einstein over the nature of truth, it pinpoints the specific traits of his metaphysical idealism, refuting rival interpretations like that of William Radice. The question of Tagore’s mysticism and his connection with the Bauls of Bengal is next considered in the light of the psychoanalytic theories of Sudhir Kakar. The connection between Tagore’s metaphysics and his brand of feminism is explored. Language Learning Strategies Employed by English Majors at Qatar University: Questions and Queries
Get PDFThis study discusses the type and frequency of language learning strategies used by Qatar University English majors. The subjects were 120 Arabs enrolled in the Department of Foreign Languages representing different learning levels (Year 1-4). Oxford (1990a: 293-300) Strategies Inventory of Language Learning (SILL) questionnaire was used. The results showed that the students used learning strategies with high to medium frequency. They preferred to use metacognitive strategies most (75.3%), whereas they showed the least use of affective strategies (58.6%). In general, the results indicate that Level and Proficiency have differences on the use of some strategies. The differences, however, are insignificant. The article concludes by recommending that more training should be given in using all strategies by embedding them into regular classroom activities
