The Psychological Impact of Diabetic Limb Problems

    Get PDF
Limb problem is a common complication for patients with diabetes. While the impact of diabetic limb problems on physical health is well known, the psychological impact of the condition is still largely unknown. People with diabetes with or without foot ulcers frequently suffer from major depressive disorder, and this is made worse by the presence of limb complications. Furthermore, depression itself can have negative consequences on the person’s diabetes. Hence, in caring for people with diabetic foot problem, the psychological sequelae must not be overlooked but managed accordingly

Are Menstrual Problems Associated with the Mental Health? A Cross Sectional Study among the Graduation College Girls

    Get PDF
Introduction: Menstrual problems like menorrhagia, dysmenorrhea and premenstrual syndrome (PMS) are common in adolescent girls. However literature regarding association between menstrual and mental health problems is limited; hence the current study was planned. Methods: It is a cross-sectional study conducted in Sangli district (Maharashtra), India among the female students from three randomly selected graduation colleges. Calculated sample size was 605 and cluster random sampling technique was applied. The study duration was June 2013 - May 2014. Study instrument was self-administered questionnaire with inventories like PSST-A, DASS-21 and SPIN. Statistical analysis was done using chi-square test and binary logistic regression. Results: Of the 707 participants; 413 (58.4%) had menstrual problems with dysmenorrhoea being the commonest. Embarrassment due to menstruation was felt by 14.9%. Menstrual problems were associated with perceived body type, body image, stress and anxiety. Embarrassment due to menstruation was associated with social phobia, stress, anxiety and depression. On binary logistic regression; body image and embarrassment due to menstruation were significant predictors for menstrual problems. Conclusions: Menstrual problems contribute to the development of various Mental Health disturbances. Hence, girls should be encouraged to seek health advice for the menstrual problems. A full time Health counsellor in schools and colleges can justify addressing adolescent health problems

Laboratory Diagnosis of Dengue: A Review

    Get PDF
Dengue is an arthropod borne disease that has become important worldwide. There is still no specific drug available for treatment and also no protective vaccine that can be used. As such, specific diagnosis is essential to enable good management and prevention of large outbreaks. Diagnosis today in many countries is still based on serology though the detection of NS1 has slowly become incorporated. Diagnosis is critical for early intervention with specific preventive health measures to prevent fatalities and also to curtail spread and reduce economic losses. Serological assays mainly detect IgM which now as a single test is invalid unless a second sample is taken to confirm. As such to effectively diagnose dengue at all stages of infection, assays with two or more markers are required or two samples taken a few days apart. Other commonly used tests include NS1 detection, nucleic acid amplification and IgG detection. However the sensitivities of the current commercial kits vary quite considerably and have to be interpreted with caution. Hence knowledge of this disease is essential when conducting diagnostics for dengue

Current Management of Dengue in Adults: a Review

    Get PDF
Dengue infection ranks highly among new and newly emerging arthropod-borne viral diseases affecting humans. It affects a large proportionof the population, mainly in tropical and sub-tropical countries, causing a high morbidity and mortality due to rising incidence of dengue haemorrhagic fever. The rapidly expanding global footprint of dengue is a public health challenge with a high economic burden.Appropriate management of the burden of dengue is hindered by several issues, including lack of understanding of the exact pathophysiology of the disease, failure to control the vector population effectively, lack of specific treatment for the disease, and technical obstacles in developing a vaccine. This review provides an overview on the epidemiology, natural history and management strategies of adult dengue patients
