Pathology of the Heart in the Qur’ān: A Metaphysico-psychological Explanation
No full textAccording to the Qur’ān, heart is the faculty by means of which an individual grasps the truth of ultimate moral and metaphysical verities. These functions can be disturbed-a condition which the Qur’ān refers to as diseases of the heart-due to a number of reasons. This article examines the nature and aetiology of the "diseases of heart" in the light of the Qur’ān. Human tendencies towards placidity, complacency and self-satisfaction, and the more dangerous capacity of self-deceptions, lead to the destruction of the inner vision and spiritual vigour, and to a "diseased" heart
The Problems of the Public Enterprise System in Nigeria: Capitalist Privatization or Management along Islamic Lines?
No full textThe Nigerian public enterprise system has been quite large in size and scope of operations. Because of its importance, concern has been shown over the problems which are likely to hinder the efficient operation of the system. This paper examines the system to underscore its problems, and the sort of efforts being made or proposed to solve them. It focuses on privatization, which is being touted as the panacea to all problems. The argument is made that the privatization process, within the capitalist ethos and framework, would hardly be a viable option to follow in order to address the present problems. Both the theoretical and empirical bases of this argument are discussed. On this basis, the necessity of an Islamic perspective to the problems of public enterprise is suggested

Classification of Sciences: A Comparative Study of Iḥyā’ ‘ulūm aI-dīn and al-Risālah al-laduniyyah
No full textAl-Ghazālī expressed many ideas on the theory of knowledge in his different works including Iḥyā’ ‘ulūm aI-dīn as well as al-Risālah al-laduniyyah. The former work is accepted by the scholars as securely attributed to al-Ghazālī, while the authenticity of the latter has been questioned by them. This article tries to compare al-Ghazālī’s views on the classification of sciences between the theory revealed in these two works to show their similarities and differences. In order to assess the mentioned purpose, this article attempts to divide the sciences explained in the Iḥyā’ and the Risālah into three different but linked categories, i.e., sciences which “come upon one” (ḥuḍūriyyah) and sciences which are acquired (ḥuṣuliyyah); revealed (shar‘iyyah) and rational (‘aqliyyah) sciences; theoretical (nazariyyah) and practical (‘amaliyyah) sciences. This article argues that both works have similarities as well as differences
