The Algerian Islamic Movement from Protest to Confrontation: A Study in Systemic Conflagrations

    Get PDF
The current crisis in Algeria has brought to the forefront the various dimensions of the Islamic tendency in the country. These include the political, the intellectual, the educational and the insurrectional aspects. While analyzing the various dimensions of the movement, this paper focuses on the mainstream of the movement. This mainstreamis essentially non-violent and actively involved in the established political process. It strives to transform both state and society in line with the essential precepts of Islam. It is the assertion of this paper that Islamic resurgence in Algeria is primarily a cultural phenomenon that cannot be understood by using simple quantitative analytical models. Only a multi-dimensional perspective that has as its centre focus the civilization and cultural forces can ascertain all the parameters and dynamics of this movement

In the context of Islam the subject of science and belief has always been part of its élan vital. From hundreds of Qur’ānic verses, Muslim scholars and thinkers have embarked on the exercise to understand scripture in the light of His creation (the study of nature or science). When talking about space and time in the empirical and spiritual sense it is indeed these "signs" that Iqbal was interested in. This paper presents some of the ideas Iqbal had elaborated upon regarding religion and science especially on the subject of the meaning and spiritual implications of the concepts of space and time

At the same time it is necessary to remove the socio cultural hinderances that block full realization of the potential of Malay Muslims. A number of such hindrances are discussed along with their symptoms and some possible causes

Crisis of Identity in a Multi-cultural Society: The Case of Muslims in Canada

    Get PDF
A great majority of studies on ethnic identity or ethnic separatism indicate that a minority group dealing with severe deprivation becomes more frustrated, more aggressive, and more demanding of autonomy or separation. However, in a multi-cultural society where the people can live with their both separate and co-existing identities, the minority group usually demands for greater rights within societies, not an exit from them. This is the case of the Muslims in Canada who constitute a tiny minority in the Canadian population. Since Canada is a multicultural country, the Muslims have not demanded any kind of autonomy but have demanded rights to preserve Islamic values, and their own distinct identity as Muslims. In this article some basic questions are raised regarding the Canadian Muslims. When and how did the Muslims arrive in Canada? What types of challenges they are facing? How do they meet these challenges? What is the future of Muslims in Canada

The Intellectual and Religious Dimensions of the Islamic Persian Literary Culture in India During the Thirteenth Century

    Get PDF
The foundation of an independent Muslim sultanate in north India in the beginning of the thirteenth century attracted, apart from soldiers, ʿulamā' and men of sciences and arts to India. Every town and city was studded with institutions of learning (Madrasas) for catering to the intellectual, religious and cultural needs of Muslims. Since the immigrants came mainly from Persian speaking lands of Khurasan and Central Asia and, with the exception of ʿulamā, they could not benefit from Islamic literature in Arabic directly, the important works on Islam i. e., books on religion, ethics, philosophy and history were translated into Persian for the benefit of the Persian-speaking intelligentsia. The munificent patronage extended by the ruling elite to scholars also encouraged them to produce original works in various sciences. Efforts made by the rulers and scholars in this respect led to the efflorescence of learning and culture during the subsequent period. This study presents an analysis of the intellectual dimension of this early Indo-Persian literary culture in Islamic perspective and to show how much the Muslims were ahead of others in formulating ideas of political economy and social welfare
